PDF Editor FAQ

Why are there luxury prisons?

The purpose of prison isn’t to punish criminals. Instead, the purpose of prisons is to reduce crime. Here’s a few pictures from one of Norways newest, most modern prisons. I think you’ll agree these are “luxurious” by the standards of prisons in most of the world.A cell. The library. The band practice room. The (shared) living room. What possible reason could a nation have for treating prisoners this way?Prisons reduce crime in a few different ways:They physically lock up criminals, and thus prevent them from committing most crimes for the duration of their prison-stay.Their existence serves as a deterrent; some people might choose to refrain from crime in order to not risk being sent to prison. They can help with rehabilitating criminals by forcibly removing them from the criminal environment they’re often part of and teaching them skills that’ll help with living a legal life after release.Only #2 here is to some degree positively influenced by prison-life being horrible, and that’s more than counteracted by #3 being harder to achieve in an inhumane prison. It’s difficult to effectively teach people anything without treating them with kindness, and as human beings worthy of respect.Norway has some of the most “luxurious” prisons in the world, and yet we also have a recidivism-rate of around 20%. Many countries with much harsher prison-conditions have rates around 60%. In other words, kindness, respect and education seems to actually work, whereas harsh “punishments” do not. We’ve got prisons like these because they work. They make Norway a safe low-crime country to live in. The low recidivism also means our prison-population remains low, so our prison-system is actually pretty cheap compared to harsher prisons that tend to end up punishing the same people over and over without actually succeeding with changing their behavior.

What is one moment in your life you thought could only happen in an exam?

Last examYou have studied only 50–60% of syllabus. You go to exam hall in full tensionSurprisingly, you see your friend sitting near you who can easily help youThe tension decreased but still you are worried about invigilatorYou get the question paper95% questions are from what you studied! You feel like jumping but you control yourselfHowever, there’s one question you are not able to properly rememberYou know you can ask this to your friend and it’ll get you a good scoreYou ask your friendHe helps youInvigilator sees itYou think you are almost goneInvigilator ignores! You realize it’s your day :)You know nothing can stop you from scoring goodAmidst all these chaos, you forgot it’s your last paper!Damn, that joy of having last exam + having a good paper + some relief which all together cannot be expressed in words! :)This moment comes only during exam and many of us miss it :)

How did your classmates who were not so good in studies turn out in life?

I had a friend. She wasn't good at studies. As in not in the typical sense. She wasn't good at maths or science or economics. And her rank was way down the double digits. She barely scored 60% in school... And I'm being generous here. She had just one passion though. Literature. She loved reading. LOVED. I am an avid reader myself, but her love for the written word exceeded mine. She always told everyone she wanted to become a journalist. Most people ridiculed her. In 10th boards, she got 56%. Where my mother was kind of unhappy with my 90%, I clearly remember her mother distributing sweets for her 56%. I really felt a little jealous of her at that moment! Our paths changed after 10th. I went for science and eventually medical school. She took up arts. We lost touch for a few years, then one random day as I opened Hindustan Times, there was a really good article. I read it, looked for the author's name. Guess what? It was my friend from school! She really did become a journalist! I felt so so happy for her! She didn't let any condescension stop her. She followed her heart and achieved her dream! Today she's an assistant editor at a leading magazine. So what is my classmate who wasn't good at studies doing now? Living her dream!Follow your passion. Don't let a set of questions or a report card judge you or your talent. Life begins outside the walls of your school. Find what flames your soul and just go for it.It's better to be a badass journalist than a mediocre doctor or engineer!Edit- I am really sorry to everyone asking for my friend's name, even though she was fine with me sharing her story she is not comfortable with giving out her name (understandable).
