If you decide to attend college you will need an associates degree in behavioral science, i don't believe HCC offers that, either way. this is the route i went. its much more efficient and it doesn't involve going through any college. you can choose to do that later, but its not necessary. check out the link below. As others have pointed out, the most important issues are 1)what is your level of education and 2)what certifications do you have?Requirements differ by state in the US. In Texas you cannot call yourself a psychologist without meeting certain requirements for licensure. I am not current on the requirements but I am sure others are. I don't have any certifications, because my Community College teaching career only required my masters degree and (I think it was 30) graduate hours in psychology at an approved university.Now, as others have pointed out, Psych is THE most popular undergraduate major. Right off the bat this should tell you you are entering an overcrowded field and it is a buyer's (hirer's) market. Many universities are tickled for you to attend (be sure to bring your parent's money, scholarships, grant money, borrowed bucks, etc) .If you notice, they give you nothing but vague promises about your ability to find gainful employment when you finish. Most schools , teachers, and so on will assure you that research shows a person with a college degree will make $$$$ more dollars than someone with an 8th grade education and $$$$ more dollars than someone with a high school education.This is a partial truth. The research on which this was based combined doctors, lawyers, dentists, psychologists, veterinarians, engineers (PE), pharmacists, optometrists, MBAs, CPAs, and others into those income averages. They did NOT have (only) a college degree, they had two to seven or so MORE years of education beyond that degree. This increased the average earnings of a college degree considerably.I am told that there are many jobs which require a college degree. They don't care what field it is in because it demonstrates a certain level of intelligence and the ability to complete something. A BA in psych would fulfill those requirements. Salary level would be completely unpredictable.Some schools only give you a masters degree as a consolation prize because they decided you were not doctorate level material. They give you a masters degree and a pat on the head and send you home.I have not surveyed salaries at the masters level so this is a WAG. (Wild guess. ). A salary of 35k to 55k would probably catch at least 75% at this level. Also you will probably always have a boss. This varies greatly depending on your area of study and your area of the country.I am told that the growth area is for those with LCDC certification. It will cost you a minimum of 3 years, possibly 5, and obviously more money.Unfortunately, too many highly qualified individuals are trying to piece together a living with part time teaching, part time consulting, part time therapy, and so forth. They are always stressed and part time work rarely offers much in the way of benefits or advancement.If the study of psych or an area of it is so fascinating to you that you would want to study it for the rest of your life, then major in it. If you are a teenager wanting to major in psych in order to understand yourself, it might be worth the time and money to consult with a career counselor for an in depth examination of your talents, interests, and values.
