Everything in Robert Pakter's answer, plus, physicians have to document extra for narcotic medications- can't just hand them out willy-nilly; there are separate records which must be kept for narcotics, from the physician to the pharmacy to the, often, care center. At home, well, you don't need to keep separate records (although, you maybe should) but you'll want to make sure you've got some good home security if it is at all known you have such drugs in your house- addicts and other desperate types may break in to steal them, possibly harming anyone in the house at the time.Narcotics are a Schedule II drug (US) which means the following practices must be observed:Practitioner's Manual - SECTION VControlled Substances ActThe CSA also creates a closed system of distribution[19] for those authorized to handle controlled substances. The cornerstone of this system is the registration of all those authorized by the DEA to handle controlled substances. All individuals and firms that are registered are required to maintain complete and accurate inventories and records of all transactions involving controlled substances, as well as security for the storage of controlled substances.All of this is both time and money-consuming.So, we have physical and medical dangers, and we have a large investment of time and documentation. It's a bad situation on both sides.Tolerance- especially in a Hospice situation- as Mr Pakter mentions, is no longer considered as big a deal as it once was, although there's a certain segment of folks who continue to treat the idea of drug tolerance as dietary fat- it's just all bad for you. Hospice personnel are usually very good at attempting to insure any pain is controlled.But "end-of-life" is not necessarily Hospice time. I've long thought we should put a whole lot more energy into pain control than simply drugs which depress the central nervous system, with all those attendant dangers. So many conditions can cause pain, whether terminal, or not, and it seems to me, with all we know about how the body works, that, in order to control pain, we should be able to do better than, almost literally, stoning a person's brain.

I was the only one that bothered to figure out how to make a double sided copy (which comes in handy in cutting back paper space)!One day, I was formatting a used controlled substance inventory form. Controlled substances such as oxycodone and morphine are medications that every portion, pill, iota and drop must be legally accounted for. Which, among other things, means that once a controlled substance form has been started… it can NOT be changed or exchanged!!!And so, I was reformatting this inventory form by copying a mirror image blank form on the backside of this form. In that way, the entire balance of medication would be covered on one sheet of paper. But what I didn’t know was that the last person that used the copier let it run out of paper before the last print job had been completed. What’s that mean?Besides disaster, it resulted in the blank side of a controlled inventory form having a page from the last print job printed on it instead of the grid necessary to keep the numerical balance organized. And the form could NOT be legally changed! Talk about a complete disaster and a legally inappropriate form. For now the front side of the form contained the numerical balance of a patient’s remaining morphine while the other side of the form now offered a 10% off coupon for Pizza Hut!!!!

Not really an FST, but worth the read.Lets just say: “stupid has no limits”. We get dispatched to a lady’s house in the middle of a cold night because her boyfriend came home drunk and she wouldn’t let him in the house. He was plastered and soaking wet in his own urine. I get to the house and find “Mr Jose” screaming at her from the curb. Even if it were in English, I doubt I could have understood a word of it. Naturally my only concern was for the well-being of one of our citizens, and the hope of not having to finish out my shift smelling urine from the back seat, I thought I was able to convince “Mr Jose” to go away “quietly”, and come back in the morning when he felt better. Or I was going to have to arrest him and he would have to sleep it off in the drunk tank. He agreed to leave. I was no further than 2 blocks away when a call came over the radio for me. Dispatch said one thing : “he’s back”….Crap. I return to find “Mr Jose” back at it screaming from the Curb. Well, the conversation went differently this time. After a very brief introduction, I pat- down “Mr Jose” for weapons, cuffed him, and headed back the the jail. We get to the Pre-booking section and I start the paperwork. I hate paperwork. We start by doing a property inventory. And this is where STUPID hits rock bottom. After putting on no less than 3 layers of gloves, remember the urine, I Started to empty his front pockets…..and pull a plastic bag full of drugs. Most people at the sight of this would claim ignorance of it. What does our new friend do, He grabs the bag and yells “MINE, YOU CANT HAVE ANY”. So now, he brought a controlled substance into a county jail….. And the paperwork kept coming.Did I tell you my thoughts on paperwork?
