My daughter got in to Cornell animal sciences and UCLA biology. She didn’t apply to Yale.multiethnic: Latina, Apache, CaucasianWe live in California and she goes to a known rigorous public HS, where there were a lot (!) of Ivy/Ivy type admits this year.GPA: 3.95UW/4.3W6APs, 3–4honors classesSAT: 1470 (750M, 720E)— took twice I believe, studying from a book in between with a 150point gainDidn’t want to take the ACT or SAT againSAT chem760 did well but dont recall her AP scoresSchool ECs: captain ComedySportz team, WASC leadership committee, tons of Thespian/drama experience, colorguard, animeCommunity ECs: >500 hrs volunteer, working and mentor leader at Los Angeles Zoo (100s kids apply each year for 30 spots) x3 years; Children’s Hospital LA volunteer (same thing, hundreds apply for 20 spots) and 1/10 to win research scholarship/internship at CHLA where she presented her research abstract at a meeting. Awesome experience for her!summers were filled with cool activities like living on an Indian reservationCommon app essay about her joy of sewing costumes for the RennFaire— she LOVES everything renaissance.Since she is seriously considering Vet School, Cornell was the best fit Ivy for her, and she thinks the campus is gorgeous. She got in to UCDavis too, but feels this is the time of her life to try living outside California and go out of her comfort zone. She’s admittedly scared of the cold and travel but excited to meet new people from all over the world. May not be an issue if school is online this year…😖Cornell has such a variety of strong programs which appeal to her, so she also thinks if she changes her career path, she can really explore a variety of options there, hopefully easily. She Took a lot of time to make her decision, and is excited to be going Red!UCLA was hard for her to decline, but in narrowing her choices down, prevet at UCLA is limited to an interest club (which sounds great in talking to students but she wants more formal education in it). She talked with students from both schools and it seems like preprofessional guidance and professor/student interaction seems stronger at Cornell esp in the area she is pursuing. May reflect student body size in the different schools/majors, resources and undergrad focus Vs graduate focus of faculty.She enjoys academic rigor but prefers a more collaborative than competitive environment. She’s one of those easy going kids who just likes to learn things. A cutthroat environment isn’t her ideal learning environment, and UCBerkeley students we talked to did concede that experience there more commonly than students described from other schools. Personally, I think most schools have these factions but readily conceded by UCB students we spoke with over the other UC students we spoke with (UCLA, UCD).She is waitlisted at Univ Chicago and Vanderbilt.I wanted her to apply to Yale, but she just wasn’t interested in Yale. She was deferred then rejected at MIT. Rejected at Harvard and Stanford which she applied to last minute bc of me.My daughter dedicated herself to activities she loved and took them however “deep” she could. She may have explored some activities with college in mind, but only stayed with activities she really enjoyed. Sure, she’s a bright girl but when you pursue what you genuinely enjoy, you naturally shine and I think this came through in her applications. She loves working at the zoo and CHLA, and only missed 1 week her whole 3 years (bc she was sick).Good Luck!

There’s a great deal of miss-information about Hyperloop and much incorrect association with Mr. Musk.- Trying to decipher whats-what & whos-who in the Hyperloop zoo is like digging through a rat’s nest of deception, falsification and chicanery.To answer your question first:Hyperloop is an Open-source concept, gifted into the public domain by Mr. Musk as an Alpha-Design whitepaper. Mr. Musk has no formal/official/legal or commercial affiliation with any Hyperloop companies. He can change his own ideas about Hyperloop related thoughts & designs as much as he wants.Now, let’s get into the the details…Point #1: Mr. Musk isn’t building or running a “real” Hyperloop company that is building a “real” Hyperloop transport platform & system that is a component of a “real” Hyperloop business that he owns or that he is a major (or a serious) investor in. He’s not seriously involved & committed to anything Hyperloop related like he is with real company’s like Tesla or SpaceX.Compared to the businesses of Tesla and SpaceX…Hyperloop is for Elon Musk, mostly social media theatrics and a somewhat crazy out-of-control distraction.Point #2: Mr. Musk isn’t affiliated with any Hyperloop companyHere’s an snippet from the official SpaceX press release announcement that was done when the theatrical initial Hypeloop launch announcement was made on 15 June 2015:“Neither SpaceX nor Elon Musk is affiliated with any Hyperloop companies. While we are not developing a commercial Hyperloop ourselves, we are interested in helping to accelerate development of a functional Hyperloop prototype…the Hyperloop concept has been explicitly "open-sourced" by Mr Musk and SpaceX, and others are encouraged to take the ideas and further develop them”.[Nothing has changed since the PR announcement]Point #3: The only real Hyperloop thing that Mr. Musk truly owns is the legal word mark "HYPERLOOP", which is now legally applicable to: "high-speed transportation of goods in tubes". Which was legally issued to SpaceX on April 4, 2017. So Mr. Musk doesn’t even personally own that.Point #4: Almost everything that you see & read about Hyperloop is conceptual, proposed, theoretical, prototype, hypothetical, experimental, sub-scale, alpha-design, possible & potential and a lot of thoughtful ideas. - but not much else.Many of the web articles that you will read are fabricated, out of date, obfuscated miss-information under the guise of a meme, a parody or satirical digital-media click bait and have no attributed credible authority & source. You’ll see many beautiful pictures of Hyperloop things that look real, but are in-fact ‘Photo-shopped Fakery’.At this point…a few passionate observers will point out that some stuff is real!!O.K. Yes, a handful of engineers from Tesla and SpaceX worked on the conceptual modeling of Hyperloop, co-authored and signed their names to the original Alpha-Design whitepaper that Mr. Musk open-source released. SpaceX even constructed a “real” SpaceX Hyperloop test track (the Hypertube) in 2016. Finally, many real competitions have been held that ran real pods though the test track.Lets just be clear about this…The test track is not a real Hyperloop track (no such thing exsist’s)It’s a small sub-scale (scaled down) prototype TEST TrackTest pods may not carry any human or animalThe tube operates at partial vacuum (nearly airless) but competing teams can select any internal operating pressure from 0.14–100 kPa (0.02–14.7 psi)Four (4) sets of competitions have been run/sponsored by Tesla/SpaceX since 2016 and many teams and organization have participated.Since Tesla/SpaceX is the primary sponsor of the competitions, they set the rules and they can therefore change whatever they want about the designs relating to the competitions. But not the designs of any independent organizations.It was rumored that the 2020 competition is planned on a much longer 10 km (6.2 mi) track but … I don’t see a lot of proof that a 10km Hypertube track was/has ever been built.The number of teams that have built pods and competed so far are…2016: 115 submissions / 30 selected to build & compete2017: 24 teams competed2018: 18 teams competed2019: 21 teams competedIf you look at the competitor team details, you will notice that about 90% of them are University teams. That’s a bad sign and not an indicator that Billions of investment $$ are flowing into Hyperloop businesses. 90% of all Hyperloop initiatives are non-commercial & non-business programs run by of a lot of college nerds operating on small university program grants.There’s a very small handful of non-academia funded teams doing Hyperloop stuff (by my quick count ~9). The non-university organizations look like this…They are mysterious, strangely organized, weirdly structured, suspiciously funded via cagey syndicates and operate via overly-complex formats.Some have a convoluted confusing management structuresSome are oddly related, associated or grounded in Kickstarter & Jumpstarter projects with 100’s of part-time non-paid equity-compensated only “employees”, “contributors” & “Volunteers”.Some are internal subsidiary's of old companies doing part-time Hyperloop project work under a tangled labyrinth of partnerships & Joint Ventures that constantly shift the ownership & accountability all over the place, and aren’t allocating much real capital, resources and time to their work. - but they’re doing a lot of social media marketing to ride to coattails of an Elon Musk associated initiative.Some are brazen Vaporware companies formed just to ride the hype-wave of something associated to Mr. Musk.And some are pet projects of wealthy benefactor angels who just want something cool to do.Point #5: Basically, Hyperloop was a crafty open-source thought experiment & a big theatrical social media marketing platform that Mr. Musk dreamt-up under the guise of a “conceptual Fifth mode of transport" which was actually grounded in a bad personal experience that shocked him when he relocated to Los Angeles, CA. - i.e. LA has really crappy traffic. (no surprise!). He’s passionately grumbled & characterized it many times as [ quote: “Soul destroying traffic” ].Point #6: Since Hyperloop is mostly vaporware, it’s kind-of starting to backfire on Mr. Musk these days because the messiness, disorganization and oddness of the strange uncontrolled wild gaggle of undisciplined communities infesting Hyperloopy stuff is starting to pollute the professional credibility and Global brand that SpaceX and Tesla are building (since they are indirectly associated to it by Mr. Musk’s whimsy).- I wouldn’t be surprised if the Board of Directors and Marketing/Branding executives at Tesla and Space are exerting pressure on Mr. Musk to distance himself from everything Hyperloop related. It’s simply an unnecessary low-quality contaminating distraction for SpaceX and Tesla.Unfortunately, that’s going to be difficult. Mr. Musk is somewhat in a pickle. He’s kind of a Benevolent Dictator (BD) of the ”idea of Hyperloop”…which isn’t all that impressive of a title (to borrow a term from the Open-Source world). Except that Mr. Musk really doesn’t have any say in anything within the community, he doesn’t direct or control anything related to Hyperloop, isn’t the boss of any organization related to Hyperloop anything & isn’t seriously/financially committed to anything about Hyperloop.This fact comes (sadly) to the disappointment of ~100 teams that desperately want to drag Mr. Musk into everything Hyperloop related.- But, Mr. Musk publicly doesn’t want to be intimately involved with it.- He’s wants to be a spectator.- He wanted to stand on a global media stage and be the “BIG IDEA’S GUY”- and watch everyone run off with [quote: “…ideas and further develop them.”]So he’s more of the ‘First Interim Benevolent Dictator Observer of the idea of Hyperloop’…(to steal from Guido van Rossum’s great title).He can change whatever he wants from the original design, because its just vapor & words.
