They felt the necessity of draft in regional language for better reach and understanding.The entire NEP2020 440 pages draft was split into chapters and each volunteer took responsibility to translate handful of them. I thought this was an interesting claim, so I’ve just spent quite a bit of time reading the World Giving Index report.First of all, the United States isn’t the most generous people according to the World Giving Index regarding volunteering, helping strangers, and donating. It’s the highest ranked overall, but it does not top all three categories. New Zealand donates more money to charity. People in Myanmar donate more time.I was particularly interested in how they got their data. It turns out the Charities Aid Foundation does not compile the data themselves and do not do any of their own research to produce this report. Instead, they rely on the Gallup World’s Most Generous Countries report, which relies on polls to determine which countries donate the most to charity, help strangers the most, and volunteer the most time.Okay, cool.I went to the Gallup site looking for their raw data.Turns out their data are hidden behind an account creation wall. You can’t get it without giving them your name, address, email, and phone number.I filled out the requisite information and downloaded the raw data as a PDF. What I found was about what I expected: the data for “charitable donations” basically follows the same pattern you see when Christian conservatives in the US brag about how much they give to charity.If you tithe you your church, that’s considered “charitable giving,” even though that money often doesn’t go toward anything most people would call “charity.” Buying a new AV system for your mega church, buying a new private jet for a televangelist, buying anti-gay-marriage billboards (the Mormon church famously spent $8,000,000 of tithed money on anti-gay-marriage billboards, for instance) is all considered “charitable giving.”You ask why Americans are so generous, yet oppose universal health care. Well, part of the reason Americans are so generous is we don’t have universal healthcare.One of the most common ways Americans help strangers is by giving money to strangers on platforms like GoFundMe.
