The man was twenty eight years my senior. We had known each other for five months because we were both in the bass section of the Capital City Gay Men's Chorus in Austin, TX. For all I know, the whole University of Texas men's swim and diving team could have come in wearing their Speedos, dropped their towels and bent over to pick them up and I would not have even noticed. Alright, THAT was a bit of hyperbole, but Jim would have most likely stopped his story, pointed my attention in the right direction, and then resumed right where he left off after the show.What immediately absorbed me was Jim's life experience. His knowledge and intellect were a magnate to me. The second thing that allowed me to open my eyes a bit wider, was that the conversation was not a monologue from his side of the table. He asked me thoughtful questions and listened to what I had to say. He would often ask that I elaborate on my answers. He was able to reach into me and pull out things I hadn't considered. He was also thoughtful of others. I watched how he treated the service staff at the diner and when he saw they were starting to clean up and put things away, he suggested we pay our bill and depart. We each paid our part of the tab and he tipped generously. He invited me over to his place later for a cocktail.All I knew was that I really wanted to know more about this man. The more I got to know, the more I wanted to know. Jim was talented at conversation, humor, education, cooking, language, diving, choral music, art, fashion, technology, sex, etc… I never really left after cocktails that night. Although we had both made some independent travel during our lives, our lives enmeshed in ways I never thought possible. When he passed away this past June (2018) it helped me to realize the answer to your question of why are some young gay guys attracted to older gay men twice their age (if not for money, gifts, etc…). The answer, at least in my case, is love.
