A friend of mine told a story about how, 25-some years ago, when she was working tech sales with an Apple division, she was at a conference that Steve Jobs also attended. At the end of the day, everyone was going to a restaurant for dinner, and through a snafu she found herself left with Jobs and two other people, whose ride had left them behind.None of them had a car, so she offered to drive. Problem was, she and her husband were fresh out of school, her husband had started law school and money was tight -- she was driving her husband's old beater car that day. The front passenger seat was a little wonky, in that it tended not to lock in place, and the seat would occasionally slide forward and backwards of its own accord. Of course, that’s where Jobs was sitting. :-) It was dark and rainy, she didn’t know the roads that well, and they came up to a toll booth. She didn’t have the exact change, so everyone in the car was scrambling to find the change to get through the toll gate. The defroster didn’t work too well, either, especially with a full car, and Jobs would obligingly wipe the windshield occasionally. They arrived safely, and she figured she had a funny cocktail party story for the rest of her life.A couple of weeks later, she noticed an extra $300 in her paycheck. She went to her boss and said, “Hey, what happened? Did I get a raise?” He didn’t know, either, but he checked with payroll. He came back with a funny look on his face and told her “Steve said it’s to cover a payment for a new car.” “Steve who?” “Uhh . . . Jobs?”Brilliant people are frequently difficult — the thing that makes them brilliant also makes them a little too different, sometimes, for social conventions.

I was let go as an IT director by a company during an economic decline since they thought they could get a cheaper deal via outsourcing. What they failed to notice, is what I actually did there!I had built the company VOIP phone system from scratch with Linux and Asterisk and made all changes. The mail and file server was also linux, which the new outsource firm had no experience with, they were a typical low end Windows only shop with a bunch of entry level techs.I had installed the financial system on which I was an expert, and since they had laid off the payroll admin, I was they only one who understood the project and job cost tracking and the payroll and taxes. I had been running payroll for the last month by myself.I (as a former principal project manager) was helping all the construction sites do their schedules. Most of them had no formal scheduling experience and could barely use a computer, much less produce a schedule for a fifty million dollar project.I was the person resolving all the audit questions for the brand new accounting director (who came up with the outsourcing idea) He had no idea how to do any of it (I had designed the financial statements and even the tax withholding math).I knew it was coming for two months since I had to debug next years budgets, so I had formed a consulting practice, and when the owner wanted to speak to me just before Christmas (when he always did his layoffs…real classy!) I went to my office and brought in my consulting contract, left him a copy and nicely told them to call me if they had any issues, but I would be charging for my time.A week later, I got the most hilarious email from accounting telling me I would have to work night and weekend (unpaid, I was salaried) overtime to resolve all their audit issues in time for my official layoff date (they really said that!). I thanked them for a great laugh!The new tech support company wound up putting me on speed dial.I then moved to my beach house 100 miles away, and made a six figure consulting income for the next 5 years semi - retired at the beach.

Hey there,I saw lot of question on salary hike for TCS just after the press conference on Q3 results a few days back. Let me just clear it once and for all.Is TCS going to give hike this year (2020) ?Yes, Rajesh Gopinathan clearly mentioned in the press conference that they are going to give salary hike.When the salary hike will be given?The salary hike will be given effective from October 1st, 2020. I am emphasizing on the word effective here a lot. Why? Effective means that the salary will increase from, October of 2020, not from April as it normally happens for other years. So, in-short in 2020 you will get hike from October , 2020 to March, 2021.What will be the percentage?Rajesh did not speak about the exact figures but one thing he mentioned is that…’the hike will be in inline with previous years.’ It means that it will be in the same range (ie. 4–8% ) from the last couple of years. Although I may be wrong as it might get increased or decreased but chance of this is very very less.We have still not received the revised compensation letter, Why?The hike was decided a few days back. Till then no one knows ( including the payroll team ) about it. It is only within the top management group and it is highly confidential. So it will definitely take time to release the compensation letters as the payroll team will have to work on it. But you can be rest assured that it will definitely be rolled out soon unlike other companies where it takes a lot of time even after hike announcements.DO we get the increased amount in October payroll?I guess not. But I guess the increased amount for October will be credited in November payroll as Arrears. But lets hope that they give us in October payroll only.If some one is serving notice period and October is the last working month, then will he get it in October?You need to understand that even if It is not credited in October payroll you will still get it in full and final settlement.Who will get the hike?It is clearly mentioned that all associates will get this. For freshers if you have completed your FA before April, 2020 then you will definitely get this. It is the same process that is followed from all these years. Nothing new here.These are the few questions that I saw on Quora, so I think I made it clear. Please note that I am not from any management group in TCS so the above facts might change.
