Without gear you are familiar with & can depend on you can be in a world of trouble in no time- sails are extremely important gear, yet you don’t need the best, you just need reliable, good sail shape & fit to the specs of your boat to be more than satisfactory.Sure, it would be nice to have the latest & greatest, but start with what you have & learn how it interacts with the boat. A vessel has is often smarter than the sum of its parts & you have to learn to listen to the sails, the rigging & the hull. You can learn to feel current under your feet after awhile. The mixture of the things that influence your boat to do it’s best in the water, like a nice, clean, smooth hull, tuned rigging & set sails is as much of an art as they are now a science. If you find that you keep putting off sailing at all because you can’t afford the best, you deprive yourself valuable time & energy put into a slow learning process of the learning curve that is sailing under all conditions. I assure you that no matter how well laid the plans, Mother Nature has a mind of her own & things on a boat have a way of always showing you what needs fixing next at just that inconvenient moment. Sailors might be gluttons for punishment.Also, learning how to sew patches or mend a small tear will not only reinforce & sometimes strengthen a sail, giving it longevity, it can also save your pocketbook from one of the most expensive replacements items on a boat. I’d love Kevlar sails. Do I see them in my near future? No. Yet it does not stop me one bit from getting out into the Gulf Stream or rounding Florida. Would it make me sail more if I had them? I’d probably show them off more. Brag about them to fellow sailors & make myself generally obnoxious online about them, but they wouldn’t make me all that much faster. I wouldn’t turn them down, but there’s so many things to attend to before I give up on a sail in full that I don’t see it happening. Not even in the budget. A boat is a expensive thing but it’s more than a labor of love- it’s a sport, a project, a social experience & a home for some. That makes it worth putting your best into every system, but learning repairs & how to do installation & brightwork (wood work), engine repair & all sorts of things you’ve never thought about before makes the experience worth it. Sailing is much more than just taking a boat in & out of a harbor. Like every other sport, you take care of the gear. It’s half the fun. Sometimes. Sometimes I think that’s where we learn to curse so well.
