What is the general category population percentage in Kerala? How is it that the Kerala government is willing to implement the EWS quota? What will be the political dividends for the LDF from this?
Thanks Kailash Ramanathan for the question,Well, I divide this question into 3 sub-questions for easy to answerWhat is the general category population percentage in Kerala?Kerala has established a government body called Kerala State Welfare Corporation for Forward Communities Limited- Samunnathi for providing welfare and support activities for forward castes and communities. So as part of establishing this body (which is for the first time in India), the state has conducted a detailed survey to enlist which all communities come under the definition of forward caste/communities.According to the new list prepared by the govt, there are 168 Forward communities, out of which 149 castes belong to Hindus and 19 castes belong to Christians. In olden concept, there were 84 main castes (both Hindu and Christian included) and 90 sub-castes. The govt has done away with sub-caste classification and redefined as castes and religion. And this 168 forward communities in total represent 27.73% of Kerala’s total population. From Hindu community, traditionally there are 4 forward castesSamantha Kshatriyas which is around 2% with 6 sub-castesNairs which form the majority among upper castes representing 14–15% with total of 24 sub-castes and multiple dozens of further classificiationsBrahmin communities- Nampoothiris, Embranthiris (both sects of Kerala Brahmins) constitute less than 1% with total of 6 sub-classifications (not sub-castes), Kerala Iyers (Tamil Brahmins-Pattar) around 1.5–2% and Konkani-GSB brahmins (0.5%)Ambalavasi communities- Temple professionals community which represents around 5% with 14 sub-caste classifications (unofficially it can be around 24)From Christian community, there are only sects which is defined as caste, not strictly caste as in Hindu concept. As of now, there are 20 castes (read as sects) within Forward Christians which are mainly traditional/Native Christian communities as such Orthodox, Jacobites, Mar Thoma, Malankara Catholics, CSI sects, certain Roman Catholic sects based in Central Kerala etc.How is it that the Kerala government is willing to implement the EWS quota?Kerala Govt since 2016 has been officially pressing for the idea of EWS quota. Infact its part of LDF manifesto to have such a concept.Since the Central Govt made a constitutional amendment for EWS quota, its now easy for state to establish the concept which otherwise couldn’t be possible. As per Kerala govt notification of EWS, economically backward members of Forward communities will get benefit of reservation of 10% in govt jobs and state education . Families, who total family annual income is less than Rs 4 lakh per annum, will come under definition of EWS.With this 10%, total reservations went above the statutory 50% limit, thus Kerala now will have 60% reserved jobs and 40% open merit (50% for SC/ST/OBC, 10% for EWS)What will be the political dividends for the LDF from this?Well, there is both immediate political gains as well as long term ideological reasons for it.It would be strange enough for many Indians to understand that CPM/CPI were the first parties in India to highlight the concept of EWS. In 1959, when EMS Nampoothiripad, the famous Marxian Guru and former CM of Kerala became Chairman of Administrative Reforms Commission of India, he presented an idea of Economic Reservation. The idea was developing an economic critiea as Economic Forward groups within SC/ST etc which need to be excluded and giving that percentage of seats to Economic backward communities of other communities. However this was strongly opposed by other political groups in 1960s as reservations wasn’t aimed for economic purposes, rather for social affirmative action. But this concept became one of the key ideologies of CPM/CPI and along with Lohia Socialists groups, this became a core ideology. EMS campaigned for this concept and he was able to influence socialists, particularly then-the popular Bihar leader Karpoori Thakur who became the first Non-Congress CM of Bihar in 1970. Based on this discussion with CPM, Karpoori Thakur developed a new formulae known as Karpoori Thakur formula (The pattern of reservation introduced in Bihar provided for the economic criteria within the reservation for certain backward classes by having two lists. The first annexure provide for 12 percent reservation without the economic criterion for the most backward classes and annexure II provided 8 percent reservation with economic criterion for other backward classes. Further, there was three percent reservation for women and three percent for the poor of the forward classes. This system was working in Bihar for more than a decade when the V P Singh government announced reservation for OBCs.)Economic reservation policy: CPM bent on implementing what it advocated for long | Thiruvananthapuram News - Times of IndiaTen Per Cent Reservation: Who Will Benefit? However, EMS couldn’t do much in Kerala due to coalition politics and opposition from its core vote groups- the lower castes. However the basic concept of creamy layer exclusion originated in Kerala with Kerala Govt going to Supreme court in the case- State Of Kerala & Anr vs N. M. Thomas where the terms of Creamy Layer was first defined. In original communist ideology, the reservation should be more skewed towards economic order. This is because CPM always sees its ideology on class basis (Rich vs Poor). So naturally it originally supported economic reservations. However, in Kerala context, CPI/CPM rose as part of Kerala renaissance which was more of social reformation movements against casteism. CPI was a byproduct of Hindu reformation movement, particularly lower castes enlightenment. So in Kerala, the class division was fully dominated by caste division too (which is a Pan India case). CPM/CPI draws much of its vote bank from traditionally lower caste Hindu communities. So EMS and many veterans concept of economic reservation never had enough takers even within CPM in 1960s and 70s in Kerala too. But it always remained in their party documents and used as a discussion subject in many party congress.By 1990s, Kerala society had achieved huge changes. A good percentage of lower castes who enjoyed reservations became economically advanced, thanks for multiple business opportunities as well as Gulf migration. On the contrary, many traditional upper castes remained in economically backwardness. CPM always see a potential vote bank among those who are economically backwardness and also they found that many lower castes members who were once economically backward, not progressed to higher scales have refrained from voting itself. This has made CPM to consider pushing the agenda of EWS to garner more votes…In 2016 election, LDF realized there is a strong potential votebank to explore from many upper caste Christians of Central Travancore, particularly orthodox communities of Pathanamthitta etc which rallied behind LDF. Traditionally Upper Christians were hardcore UDF voters, but in 2016, many lower income groups within these communities switched to LDF. So as many Nairs too, especially in North Malabar. This pushed the Pinarayi Govt to aggressively push for EWS reservation as their priority agenda. As in 2016, the national regulations donot have provision of EWS, the govt implemented EWS in one govt department- the Devaswom Boards. Devaswom boards have Hindu Only recruitment policy. So there was a scope of 10% reservation for forward communities within Devaswom.Devaswom boards: Kerala govt announces 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker among Hindu forward communitiesFinancial reservation implemented in Devaswom board, first list to be published tomorrowNow, 10% quota for upper-caste Hindus in Kerala temple boardsThe govt announced its EWS policy in 2017 Governor’s speech, where LDF Govt announced they will pressurize Central Govt for this policy. However there is no need of much pressure as BJP also have similar policy, thus it became more easy to pass. So when BJP govt passed EWS amendment at national level, LDF govt supported it and welcomed it.CM Pinarayi Vijayan welcomes economic reservation moveLDF aims to get a share of Christian and Nair votes which traditionally gone to UDF. While aristrocratic and upper strata Christians and Hindu upper castes never votes for LDF, there is a strong potentially for lower income groups within these communities to vote for LDF. In 1950s, CPM represented heavily the peasants and downtrodden. However today, CPM is no more a pure downtrodden party. The party works much like Chinese style socialist capitalism and heavily associated with capitalist elements. So the leadership has no issues to strongly associated with aristocracy and richie rich etc. This means the economic backward groups with Forward communities have no more reservations to connect to LDF which now looks similar to UDF, but more socialist and more supportive to economically poor too. Will it be successful, only upcoming LSG Elections and State elections can tell. But many party groups believe, around 1–3% of neutral vote among EWS of forward community will swing to LDF….Further readingArun Mohan (അരുൺ മോഹൻ)'s answer to I'm learning about Indian castes etc., I would to like know the ranking of these groups - Nairs, Nambudiri, Iyer (Tamil), Iyengar.?Arun Mohan (അരുൺ മോഹൻ)'s answer to Will BJP will be able to win seats in the upcoming kerala assembly election?
Would some people prefer to die if they had an option to get cure of deadly disease at cost of having to provide DNA to scientists?
Yes, some people die when they refuse medical treatment for themselves or their children because their religion teaches them to rely on prayer or faith healing rather than medicine and science, which obtaining and using DNA to diagnose or treat someone represents. There are a number of sects, including Christian Scientists and Jehovah's Witnesses, that are well known for this kind of behavior.Parents' refusal of medical treatment based on religious and/or cultural beliefs: the law, ethical principles, and clinical implications. Two large Christian groups that reject medical treatment in favor of prayerFaith Healing: Religious Freedom vs. Child Protection - CSI
Do Syrian Christians in Kerala have Jewish ancestry?
Thomas was a Jew, he came for jews. They were using Aramaic, Hebrew texts. Persian sect of Church of East (COE-East Syriac) had contact with them - which was also founded by Thomas or his followers. The existence of them are found in books written by COE authors. (other books like Acts of Thomas, Gospel of Thomas etc also existed) it would be a small sect in the beginning. The aim was to focus on Jewish people first - changed after it reached Europe. (same with Persia, parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan) various Jedeo Christian sects existed in Asia even before it became official religion of Europe (became rigid). Jewish Jewish Burial Chambers are found in Kerala. (BC)They increased their influence in Kerala when when Knanya traders settled down and bought various privileges and authority over many lower castes. Later migration happened due to persecution in Persia. (till 15 th century) Last Church of East Bishop to India was Abraham. After that - Portuguese did not allow Church of East Bishops to enter India. Church of East which was the largest church till 12 th century declined due to Mongol attack. Many left the church to join Eastern Catholic, others joined churches like Russian, Greek and Armenian in west Asia.Persian cross (nasrani stambham) are founded all over Kerala. Copper plates are proof of their privileges granted by Kings. (written in Hebrew, Kufic, Pahlavi etc) Kollam port was build by Iraqi bishops in 8 th centrury. They were a wealthy group and even had army which was headed by “Malankara Moopen”. (from ancient families) Visiting Bishops never had power in the internal matters of Malankara church. They helped Kings during wars. Kings provided land even near temples in many places. The lack of trading community and the need for trade with west Asia may be the reason. (later taken over by Arabs/Portuguese/Dutch/British)With the arrival of European Roman church they were subjugated to come under Catholic and to follow “correct” form (of Roman church). Later British bought the Protestant Christianity. They converted many lower castes and thus formed Latin catholic, CSI etc. This strained the relationship between Upper castes and Nasranis. (who were almost like a caste) Portuguese tried to bring them under catholic and burned ancient texts and history. Dutch and British wanted to get rid of Catholics. (Portuguese) only one peseta bible survived after the Portuguese burned all ancient texts (which is now kept in UK) They accused them as Judaizers, Nestorians or following the teachings of Manichaeism.Nasranis observed Sabbath and avoiding unclean meats (pork was introduced later by Europeans) Pesaha Appam is derived from the ancient bread of Jewish tradition. With the arrival of Orthodox Syrian bishops (West Syriac) divisions started. Now some sects are Catholic (Syro Malabar, Syro Malankara) Some are Orthodox (Indian orthodox, Jacobite). Other churches are Chaldean church of East (Assyrian), Mar Thoma Church, Thozhiyoor, st Thomas Evangelical etc.Latin and CSI are also major churches. School, Colleges, Printing, Hospitals etc are introduced to Kerala by Western Chuch. (even modern Script) Rubber, Tapioca, Potato, Cocoa, Tea, Coffee etc are introduced to Kerala by Europeans. A small section of Anglo Indian community also existed (most migrated to western countries) Kochi jews migrated to Israel.Nasranis are the most educated and successful community in Kerala. Today Christians form around 20 % population of Kerala. They along with Nair caste form the Forward caste (as Brahmins are less than 1 percentage and have no real influence)Today Caste and religion have no real significance and number of atheists are increasing in Kerala. (in all groups) Many people believe that caste and religion has run its course. (Alternative religions like Dinkoism are their tool )
