It all started from the split between K.Balachander (KB) and Ilayaraja (IR).During 80's especially in the golden period of 86-90 IR used to be very busy and almost all the leading directors used the services of IR for the music and Re-recording (RR). At the same time lot of first time producers also dependent on IR for the music. The trend at that time is to book IR for music and Goundamani-Senthil for comedy and the rest with fillers - you are assured of Minimum Guarantee success. There were films which went on to become huge hits (especially "Mike" Mohan and "Dowser" Ramarajan ) just because of IR.IR is supposed not to differentiate between the big and small producer/director. Any film he accepted means he used to complete the music tracks and the RR to his best ability and complete the same (in the accepted order). The complexity lies in managing his dates with that of lyricist, directors and other stakeholders for review and approval. Somehow it was managed and the show was going.In 1989 KB directed (produced by Kavithalaya, KB's in house production house) Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal. IR was the music director and since the main hero is a singer, IR has given some ever lasting music for the same and was keen on doing the RR also. KB known for his stinginess (rather, cutting costs) wanted to do away with RR and planned to fill with IR's previous RR as fillers and seeked IR's approval citing various reasons. Though IR was not keen he reluctantly agreed. The film was released and the music was big hit (one of the biggest hits of IR). Experts could notice the RR was not up to the mark and even had some RR from film Varumiyin Niram sivappu (music by MSV). IR was unhappy and this was the first seed of discontent.This trend of booking IR, but utilizing only for music track and avoiding him for RR (citing time, but actual reason is money) continued for one more film of Kavithalaya - Unnai Salli Kutramillai -a Amir John film with Karthick in lead. IR was very much upset and said if this trend continued he may not be keen to do another film for Kavithalaya.This upset KB and he decided to part ways with IR. Nee Paadhi Naan Paadhia Vasanth film from Kavithalaya has to go without IR and had music from Maragatha Mani (Keeravani, changed names, ironically a die-hard fan of IR).Now comes the big occasion - Mani Rathnam (MR) was booked by Kavithalaya for their next film - For MR it is the film after Thalapathi - though MR had good equation with IR he has to go with as per the production house wishes. But he demanded the best. Somehow KB was able to identify A.R.Rehman and as they say, the rest is history. Roja was released in 1992 and the music was sensational hit and the legend of ARR is born.This is just (KB-IR ego clash) is just one side of the story. Many were working behind or looking for the fall of the great IR as they could not stomach the success of him and more importantly could not stomach being labelled of their success being attributed to the music of IR . Chief among them are Vairmuthu - the lyricist and Bharathiraja the other director who immensely benefited from IR's music. For them ARR is god send and ensured that IR was sidelined. (Vairamuthu's fall from grace started this time and that is another story, not very much relevant here)After this IR was targeted subtly and more directly for his ego, rigidness and head weight for all and sundry and to his credit as far as possible IR never joined issue with them. Along with ARR, another music director came in to the scene at that time. Deva, was literally deivam (god) for the low budget film producers and IR baiters. (Deva, at his peak even used to copy his own songs !) The annihilation of IR is complete ..(or so they thought).Unthinkable betrayals, severe test for friendship and trust - IR has to go through an unknown phase to him - several of his old colleagues remained loyal to him Balu Mahendra and Fazil to name a few. (after all these, Kadhalukku Mariathai of Fazil in 1998 showed how IR can still be a force) Among the new directors Bala (Sethu and Pithamahan) remained fanatically loyal to IR. And Balki from Bollywood (Cheenikum, Pa ...)In spite of the musical genius of ARR, for a generation of Tamil (Cinema) Music lovers IR is like a demi-god and will remain so. Also, it is nice to know that both IR and ARR have mutual respect to each other.ps - Most of the above information is from hearsay and from the media publications prevailing at that time. Authenticity of this cannot be ascertained and the personal bias of the author towards IR will always be there.
