You would notice my skin.I am not posting a photo of my face for privacy reasons.You can swear up and down that you “don’t see color” but when you see me walking down the street, your eyes work just fine.When people see my box braids and dark skin, they assume I grew up in the hood.I grew up in the suburbs and have never set foot in “the hood”.The look of concealed surprise people have when they hear me talk is all the evidence I need to know that when people see me, all they see is black.They don’t see student council president.They don’t see a girl who does high school math in 7th grade.They don’t see the girl who has all A’s.They see a girl whose daddy ain’t around, just because my mum decided to take me shopping.They see her at the library and think that she doesn’t have a computer at home.They think that she is broke, even though her mum makes a six-digit salary.I would love to sit here and write that people notice my eyes like so many people here are writing, but I can’t lie.I wish that people noticed my pearly white smile, or my button nose, but they don’t.I wish that I was just “smart” instead of “the smart black girl”.I wish that skin color doesn’t matter, but it does.Being a dark-skinned black woman shouldn’t be this hard, but here we are.Don’t be racist.Edit: This is crazy. What makes me cringe?Questions like this:“I am a ugly, dark skin (usually south asian) guy. How can a get a light skin (usually white) girl to like me.”I am so tired of seeing question like these pop up in my feed.They remind me of this meme that I saw that said something along the lines of“I am broke, fat and ugly. No pretty women I ask out ever says yes. This is why women are shallow.”“Have you ever asked out a fat, broke and ugly woman?”“No.”“Exactly.”I hope that these people are trolls because I don’t want to believe that these are genuine questions.Why does having dark skin mean that you are ugly?Why is marrying a white women always the goal?I have nothing against interracial marriage, don’t be mistaken.I have a problem with people who make it seem like in order to be “pretty”, you have to be white. Very often, the answer is no. Not only do intelligent people very often fail to realize how much smarter they are than everyone else, they also tend to overestimate other people’s intelligence even when they do. Let me tell you a little story.Once upon a time, I was at a bar with some friends. The bar had an outdoor area where you could stand around and drink beer. There was a guy who thought it would be funny to ride past the bar repeatedly on an extremely loud moped. At certain times, he would stop, rev the moped so loud that nobody could hear themselves think, and begin whooping loudly. This same guy had been at it all day, not just by the bar, but riding up and down the streets and residential neighborhoods, screaming and hollering and bothering everyone he could with his moped.I mentioned, casually, that I wouldn’t mind chucking my beer mug at his head if he were close enough. A friend of mine, whom we shall call Angus (not his real name), said, “Well, you should probably leave someone as unstable as that guy alone. He obviously has some serious emotional difficulties.”Angus is a smart dude, but he misread the guy on the moped. The issue is that the guy on the moped was probably not suffering from some deep emotional trauma that had made him so obstreperous. Rather, Moped Guy’s thought process was, most likely, no more complicated than this: “YEAH! YEAH! LOUD! LOUD MOTHERFUCKER! YEAH LOOK AT IT MAN! YEAH! LOUD!”The issue that Angus was having is that Angus, being an intelligent and empathetic individual, was trying to understand Moped Guy’s motivations and look at things from Moped Guy’s perspective. Angus was thinking to himself, “What would have to happen to me to get me to act that obnoxiously?” The thing is, intelligent people of high character, like Angus, are not moved to act like idiots unless they suffer something really bad, at which point a complicated emotional process leads to bad behavior. Angus’ miscalculation was that Moped Guy would have to have suffered some horrible trauma to act in the way he did. The big issue is that Angus did not account for Moped Guy’s stupidity, and forgot the simple fact that stupid people will act stupid without any suffering or instability. Dumb people just act dumb.I have suffered from this problem myself. For the longest time, I did not realize that so much of human behavior was posturing, and did not realize how to read people correctly. I thought that, when someone talked to me about their interests, they were merely stating facts and not trying to talk to me about themselves. The vast majority of humans are so subjective that most of their communication is about themselves and not about things or ideas or even other people. Intelligent people have problems grasping that.EDIT: I would like to extend a thank you to all of the people who told me how horrible and condescending I am in the comments while being as condescending as possible themselves. You prove my point admirably.
