How do I write an excellent curriculum vitae?

The excellence of a CV is not in the writing of it. It is what it contains (your experience, your qualifications, etc) that make it excellent. At a pinch, follow some simple steps:- If at all possible, keep it to one sheet (single sided).- If at all possible, maximise white space for aesthetics.- Don't chock-a-block it with a sea of grey text.- Use neutral and formal language throughout.- Include HR-friendly words such as earned for the company, sold, won, promoted, solved, hands-on, started, completed, revenue, planned out, managed, directed, gave direction to, and the proverbial customers paid into.If you don't have a "career objective" (which is a little unusual, but not particularly surprising), just include a short bio about yourself.Example: "Robert Charles Lee has been in the publishing and printing sector for over 30 years and has operated internationally out of London, New York, Italy, Beirut, Tokyo and now Hong Kong."You get the idea.

What is the difference between a résumé and a CV?

Thanks for A2A.Well, do you understand the difference between data and information? CV and Resume are like data and information respectively.CV(or curriculum vitae) contains all data about you. Much like your biography it begins from your schooling information, all the projects that you have worked with, all of your skills, hobbies, interests, extra-curricular activities. So for example (since I am an Engineering student) my CV would include these:My 10th, 12th and B.Tech marks and details of the universities. My projects onTelecommunication, Microcontrollers(2 projects), Java, a library portal using VS 2010A seminar on the antennas used for Square Kilometer ArraySkills :Programming languages: C, Java, C#, MATLAB, T-Spice, Python, RIDEs : VS2010 - 2015, Eclipse, Anaconda, R StudioContent Management system : SitecoreInformation Retrieval : Apache solrDetailing these would go on and on and exceed two pages. Plus you’d add up your extra-curriculars and achievements. Now, let’s take a look at my resume as a .NET resource:My B.Tech marks and details of the university. My projects onMicrocontroller (2 projects), a library portal using VS 2010Skills :Programming languages: C, C#IDEs : VS2010 - 2015Content Management system : SitecoreInformation Retrieval : Apache solrNotice that I only am showcasing the relevant information which is required for the recruiter to know about me and some additional perks.Let’s take another look at an open-source resource’s resume:My B.Tech marks and details of the university. My projects onMicrocontrollers(2 projects), JavaSkills :Programming languages: C, Java, PythonIDEs : Eclipse, AnacondaContent Management system : SitecoreInformation Retrieval : Apache solrI case of resumes only relevant extra-curriculars and achievements are advised to mention, especially those in which you have excelled. We generally do not mention about hobbies and interests except when they are relevant.Rounding off:CVs are lengthy and can well be over two pages ; Resumes are short ‘n concise and are not more than one - two pages.CVs contain every detail; Resumes are tailored for only relevant details. And because of these two key differences, the layout differs too. This is one of the useful resources for CVs:http://www.grad.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/pdfs/cvsamples.pdfThese two for resumes:https://www.utdallas.edu/career/docs/students/resumepacket.pdfhttp://studentaffairs.psu.edu/career/pdf/CG/CG_resume.pdfHope this helps!

Is it tough to get admission in german universities?

Well after thinking about it for a while, my answer would be“It is not tough to get into a German University if you are deserving”Let's make the answer more interesting by making it a conversationYour next question will be concentrated somewhere one the word deservingHow am I deserving for a German University?Well let me tell you again (as I keep telling you in my previous answers), this question is vague in context to education in Germany. Why? How is this vague?Unlike Indian Education System where reputation and ranking of college decides the worth and popularity of the course, in Deutschland, it's just the other way round. Here the courses are choosen prior to Universities. Maximum of German Universities are run by government, so they are tuition free (again to maximum extent) and are hence contain an excellent faculty.Okay, so now how am I deserving for a course? Finally, this is the question I am looking for and trust me this is the question you should ask if you have dire desire to study in Germany. The admission panel of a college in Germany always look for a candidate who is really enthusiastic about the course he/she is applying for. That's the only way they decide if you deserve a place in their university or not. They scrutinise your application for the things that links your previous study or work to the course you applied for.How do they know this? The admission panel focus's on the following things which directly influence your chances of getting selected.Previous Study- You will only have chances to apply for only those courses which are directly related to the previous study specialisation. For example, I did my Btech in mechanical engg. Hence I am only eligible to apply fir courses which is related to ME. I cannot apply for Artificial Intelligence or Biochemical Studies.Curriculum of your previous study- Sometimes just being an engineer of a certain branch won't entitle you to apply for all courses related to that branch. You must fulfill a specific credit in some particular subject in order to get into that course. This is why many university ask you to fill up a credit chart or ask you the link of your previous college curriculum during application process. For example, I got rejection for MS in Mechatronics from TUHH because I my Btech didn't had enough credits for 'Signal Theory' subject. However my friend got admit for the same as his college curriculum was meeting the requirements.Internships and Work Experience- well this shows the panel members how crazy are you for the course. Interning in a company or having work experience in a firm which is somewhat associated with the course you applied for highly increases your chance for getting an admit. For example, I being a fresh graduate have no work experience, however my 2 three month old internships in Powerplants had the major role in landing me an admit for MS in Power Engg. However if you don't have this, it won't degrade your chances of getting an admit as well. Just it won't be that advantageous.Research Paper on that Field - Well this is optional. Our Indian system doesn't provide us any scope for writing research paper in curriculum. However if you have any chance on these research paper, you should take it. Many IITs allow external students to help in the ongoing research topics in their dept during semester breaks. So make sure you grab an opportunity. However I would recommend you to go on an internship rather than to help someone write a research paper who most of the time don't appreciate your help and don't even mention you. (Happened to me)Previous projects - Well make sure you choose your final year project wisely and in accordance of the course you want to study further in future. They surely ask about your projects during interview if you clear the first round. This can be one of the areas where you can easily sale yourself to the panel. My two projects on Powerplant and one on Automobile were asked in details duri g interview and helped me getting admits in both courses.Letter of Motivation and Curriculum Vitae - Well we can agree upon how important these two are. Think of it as the way to help them understand what you are , what you did and why you did it. I will save the tips to write a good LOM and CV for another question.Letter of Recommendation- Some may think that this is out of their hand but let me tell you, it's totally in your hand. Contrary to popular believes, maximum professors will be happy to know that you want to do your further studies abroad and would happy to right you a LOR. Ask your recommenders to highlight some of your projects that's present in your LOM and CV in their LORs. However I will recommend you to get your LOR from the following people if possibleProfessor who have specialized in the course which you are appling for.Professor who are somehow associated with NITs or IITs. Make sure you mention this under their name at the end of LOR.Managers or Team evaluated under whom you worked in certain projects. In my case I got an LOR from the Mahindra as I was part of a team who took part in BAJA racing and came in a good rank.I guess this will do the trick for you. These are some of the measures I took to increase my chances of getting admit. These landed me 3 successful admits out of the 7 courses I applied for on Germany and 9 out of the 15 courses altogether.Hope this answer helps you.I am sorry if the answers are too long or for grammatical mistakes and typos if present. I just want to help you in the process well upto my knowledge. If you like it, do upvote and share with those who need it. For any queries and suggestions do comment below.Thank you and All the best.
