What are the best interview questions that are tricky and require presence of mind to answer them?

This happened during the campus placement interview at MIT, Manipal. The company had come for the position of an analyst. After introduction and some general questions,Interviewer: Close your eyes.Me: Sir, excuse me?!Interviewer: Yes, please close your eyes.Me: OKI closed my eyes wondering what would he want me to analyse with my eyes closed!Interviewer: I will give you a question. You’ll have to hear it with your eyes closed and give the answer after you open your eyes.Me: OK Sir.Interviewer: Now I am going to draw some lines on a sheet of paper. You are going to tell me how many lines I have drawn without seeing the paper. After that he proceeds to draw some lines on a sheet of paper and asks me if I can give him the answer.Me: Yes sir. The answer is 11. Can I open my eyes now?Interviewer told me to open my eyes. I checked the answer and it was correct!Interviewer ( surprised and happy ) : How did you know the answer?!Me: Sir I when you told me to answer the question with my eyes closed I knew I had to make use of my other senses. So I started listening to the number of pen strokes which you make. That is how I arrived at the answer. The interviewer was impressed and told me this was what he was looking for.He also told me not to disclose this question or the answer to anyone else so that he could ask it in further interviews :P

My Brown admissions interviewer asked me how many other colleges I was applying to. Should I report this?

Report that???As an interviewer for MIT, I, many times, late in the interview, will ask:“May I ask to what other colleges you are applying? I know many of them and may have some recommendations.”I know that every person applying to college is applying to six or more colleges. MIT as well as Brown and the other elite Private US colleges accept less than 10% of the applicants. Therefore they are Reach colleges for everyone who applies. I want to make certain that the applicant has covered their bases with the colleges that might be a good fit for them.No one has ever refused to answer, and every one was thankful for my comments and suggestions. And, none of the answers ever influenced my write-up nor did I ever mention in the write-up what other colleges the applicant was applying to.I consider the MIT interview a two-way Discussion. I am trying to find out about the Person who is applying, and the applicant should be getting information from me.Of course, I also add, when I ask the question, that they do Not have to answer and not answering will not affect the interview.I believe, in your case, if you replied, Two other colleges, then I would hope the interviewer would tell you, what I tell others: “Try to apply to three Reach colleges and Brown/MIT is a reach college for every applicant, and to four could-get-into colleges and then consider applying to two safety (should get into colleges). And make certain that Each college to which you apply is a good fit for You.All the best.

What are some of the best questions to ask during a university interview?

I interview applicants to MIT.First, the MIT interview (60 to 90 minutes in length) is a two-way Discussion. However, at some point, early in the discussion, I will ask:"Why are you interested in MIT?"I expect a fairly lengthy answer that will set the basis for much of the remainder of the "discussion".I also will ask about the major projects that they did in their high school courses: history, literature, science, mathematics..... anything for which they did a lot of work and could describe to me.I also will ask the applicant to describe (in detail) their major extracurricular activities. From those basic questions, I can lead the discussion to get a better understanding of the Person and whether that person is a good fit for MIT and MIT for the applicant.Easy. Has worked well since 1976, when I started to interview prospective MIT freshmen.
