When you read the accounts of German WWII soldiers, you often get the impression that they had a lot of disregard for the performance of their enemies and even for some of their allies.Surprisingly, one type of soldier is not only excluded from their harsh (and sometimes arrogant) verdict but is often praised for their bravery and resistance:The Italian fighter pilot.The pilots of the “Regia Aeronautica”, the Royal Italian Air Force, were fighting side by side with the German “Luftwaffe” crews during Rommel’s Africa campaign. It happened more than once that the slow-flying German Stuka dive-bombers were hunted by British aircraft and had to be saved by Italian pilots.A Macchi C.202 fighter aircraft (photo: commando supremo)This is especially remarkable because, at the beginning of the war, the Italian Air Force lacked modern aircraft, and some of their machines didn’t even have radio communication.Later in the war, however, the Regia Aeronautica introduced the excellent Macchi C.202 Folgore (Thunderbolt) which was one of the best fighter planes of WWII. Franco Bordoni-Bisleri, Italy's most successful fighter ace, achieved many of his victories flying this aircraft.Altogether, there were 166 Italian aviators that shot down five or more enemy aircraft and could call themselves “aces”. This is an astonishing number. Austria, for example, had only 51 aces and Poland 91.When you read what people sometimes write about the Italian soldier, it looks as if many of them don’t know about this part of Italian aviation history.
