We have a 170 pound Newfoundland, Samson, who is a fierce protector of our home. His breed is known as being gentle giants, but Samson has never quite understood how large he is, so being gentle is something we are still working on with him!Ever since I had my daughter earlier this year, he has become even more protective of both me and my little one. This past Halloween, I was on candy duty, and every time a group of neighborhood children rang our doorbell, Samson got agitated, and he would start barking loudly. For that reason, we made sure he was securely in our living room or sitting next to my parents with the “stay” command. Usually, he is excellent with remaining stock-still when told to stay, and for the first few groups of trick or treaters, he did wonderfully.After a while, there seemed to be a lull, and no kids were in the area that we could see. My family all sat down for dinner, with Samson under the table, so he could grab any scraps that fell from my daughter’s mouth. All was calm until suddenly a loud bang of a knock sounded from the other side of our large kitchen window. We all jumped, and upon seeing that it was an older child (maybe 11) in a mask, we became irritated. Manners would have dictated for the child to knock on the door!I begrudgingly got up from my chair, grabbed the bowl of candy, and looked over to make sure our giant guard dog was sitting down. He seemed to be sitting calmly with my father, so I opened the door and began to step outside. In hindsight, that was remarkably stupid of me. In a flash, Samson bolted over and stuck his head through the crack of the front door, which I had just begun to close behind me. He growled so ferociously that the kids and their mother were taken aback, but they still stood there waiting for candy. I shoved my hip towards Samson’s head to push him back in, which usually worked. Not this time. He took that opportunity to try to grab the belt loop of my jeans and pull me inside, away from the “danger.” Being that his head and mouth are massive, he accidentally got my entire right hip in his mouth! He did pull me in successfully, which he seemed to be rather pleased with.I’m just glad I blocked him from charging at the masked kids, because this story would have had a very different ending if I hadn’t. As for me, I wound up with a large, nasty bruise and some puncture marks from the pressure of his canines, which miraculously didn’t pierce through my pants. It’s all healed up nicely now, but I definitely learned my lesson for next Halloween!

Ichthysaurs - those really big ocean dwelling dinosaurs - were preyed upon by something much larger than themselves. We have never found a large enough and intelligent enough predator in the fossil record. However, invertebrates don't fossilize well. So it was probably a large invertebrate like a squid or an octopus.Here's the interesting thing. The dinosaur bones that have been found are always arranged very strangely, with the vertebra spread out in designs and patterns. Whatever ate the ichthysaurs was intelligent enough to play with their food. And even more interesting - the vertebra are spread out in patterns that resemble the suckers on an octopus's tentacle. So these may actually be self portraits made by the predator.The modern day octopus is creepily intelligent and often plays with and rearranges the remains of it's prey. They also play funny little tricks when in captivity. There was an octopus at an aquarium who would sneak out once all the biologists left in the evening. He'd climb into the crab tank, steal some crabs, carry them back and eat them. The impressive thing was that he only did this when everyone had left.I wonder how intelligent the giant ones millenia ago were.
