Understanding Which Enrollment Forms To Complete: Fill & Download for Free

Just before 2 months of GATE, I was still going to classes till the 10th or 12th of December. I was pretty tensed whether I will be able to complete the syllabus and practice enough or not. Till then, I had some parts of thermal and production remaining. I had a target in mind to give the first full-length test on the 20th.But that wasn't going to be easy. I had to finish the remainder of the portion, practice some problems from that portion, revise the whole syllabus and then give the test.And I couldn't do it. By the 20th of December, I could only finish the syllabus for one time. It took me 4 more days to revise everything once again (of course from short notes only). I wrote my first test on 25th December and I was pretty satisfied with what I got (55 marks). I spent the next two days checking what mistakes I did and recording them in my short notes for future reference.Now, I had to speed up because I had enrolled for two test series, I wanted to practice to make it possible to cover as much wide spectrum of questions as possible. My routine was the same ie. Revise-Test-Analyze-Record except for the frequency of it i.e. I was giving a test every alternate day by the end of 24th-25th January. I had kept the last 3 days before GATE to relax and revise because I didn't want to make the marks of the last practice test to affect my concentration.For the aspirants to understand what Analysis means, List out all the questions you did wrong and check what mistakes you made. Record them and practice them every time you visit your short notes. Concentrate on accuracy rather than the number of questions attempted. And for every test you give, record the accuracy of it so that you can see if it is improving. I was a fresh graduate of VIT Vellore. The year was 2015. My acdemics was strong. But I never wanted to get a job. I never saw myself working for someone else. I didn't sit for any placement, so after the exams were over , I naturally came home. I wanted to do something of own, some kind of startup. I thought about staying at home for sometime and then go to Pune or Mumbai for job hunt in startups. Due to some family problems , I needed to stay at home with my parents. Time was moving fast. I could see that my decision of not taking a job was taking roll on me. I was depressed. The problem for which I stayed home wasn't improving. I couldn't stay any longer, but my parents also needed me. I stayed longer. After 6 months. My father asked me to start going to a college and take some lectures. That way, I would be at home and still be working. I am an engineering graduate. Naturally physics became my favourite subject. I thought of teaching physics in local colleges. This went by for another 4 months. I realised that the teaching method in our 11th and 12th has remained same for a very long time. Students are literally scared of science , especially physics. I used to bring small experiments in my class to make them understand better. They really liked it.I thought to myself. Why shouldn't I do something about this. I know how physics must be taught. Engineering gave me that skill. I thought to myself , why shouldn't I do something to change the way of teaching. I was working hard in my class. I was unpaid. But I still worked.I needed some support. I needed some background. Something or somebody that would guide me on this path. And then came the turning point of my life. And this is where my friend comes into picture.One of my friend, let us call her S, was enrolled on internshala. She knew that I was desperately looking for some opportunity. One day she messaged,‘hey! do you know who HC Verma is? He has posted some internship about designing physics experiment. Maybe you should have a look and apply for it.’For those who dont know him, Dr HC verma is an experimental physicist in IIT kanpur. He has written the most sold out books of physics by the name concepts of physics.I wasn't enrolled into internshala at that time. I made an account and applied for the internship. Some 800 students applied for it. I thought to myself , I am never going to make it.But she somehow believed that I would make it. She had already got some internship via internshala, so helped me for the first round. She knew how to answer the questions.She literally pressurised me to give nice and detailed answers to fill the form. She wanted me to be serious about that. I didn't want to do it. I thought that why should I even try. I am not going to get it.I made through the first 3 rounds. Then Dr Verma himself interviewed me on phone. Asked me why I want to become a teacher. I told him the truth. I told him about my experience as a teacher and what I want to do about it. And finally I was given an assignment to complete. I gave my best. I was waiting for my result and just one day before my birthday this happened.I got through. 2 students got selected to work under the living legend of physics. I realised that day that I am doing something right in my life. I know some of you might say that why is this such a big deal. Well read on.When I came to join for my internship, the other guy didn't show up. I stayed at Dr Verma’s home in IIT kanpur campus. He wanted me to continue the work that I did as my assignment. He had asked me to select any story from panchatantra and formulate some physics based question on the story and also to give correct solution for them. That was my assignment, only one story. Now he wanted me to continue work on that. I didn't know what he had in his mind. I used to complete 1 story in 3 days and we would discuss that. He started to appreciate me. He said that, I am doing really good work . I didn't think much about it at that time. I was learning so much from him through that discussions.After some 3 weeks, he told me his plan. That he was working on an idea. He wanted to make physics much more relatable and easy to understand. And he was asking his colleagues and participant at various workshops to give him some material , that would include questions based on the story and their solutions. He had been proposing that idea to everyone for almost 5 years. But he wasn’t satisfied with them. Enter me!!! He said that if I am interested , he would want me to be his co-author for this book. I couldn't believe my luck. I came to learn about his teaching method and about his skills. And this guy was giving me a chance to write a book with him. That day I remembered my friend. The way she made answer those questions seriously in first round. I thanked her profoundly afterwards.This is me getting my certificate of completionComing to today. I am still working on the book. It is in it's final stages. We are proof reading it for the 4 th time. We hope to publish it in January 2018. Please look for it. It is a completely different book. And the name of the book is, ‘ Physics with stories’.This was a news article that came when Dr Verma retiredThe article says that, his most recognised book “ concepts of physics” has sold over 3 million copies and he will now teach physics through Jataka tales.Thank you for reading.P.s. [This is not an officially-endorsed answer by the CS50 staff, just the personal perspective of an ex-TF.]I don't know where you got the idea that there's an amount of time you "should" spend on the course. For Harvard College students, taking CS50 for credit, in an on-campus setting where CS50 is one of four classes that make up our full-time enrollment status, and where in-person office hours are available four nights a week, in-person section one other afternoon, and where the expectation is that you're able to text or call or Facebook your TF for help at most hours of the day...the problem sets are designed to take about a week apiece.For an online student in a completely different situation? Up to twice or three times that doesn't sound particularly unreasonable to me. If there's something I'd be concerned about, it's that you're spending most of your time having to re-learn things as you forget them, rather than having the opportunity to set aside the time to fit it all in your head simultaneously, solve that week's problem, and then move on. But if you feel like you're getting the course material, but just moving incredibly slowly, then my advice would be to keep going.I think the most important question to ask yourself is: "Is the style that this course is taught in working for me?" CS50's instructional material is presented in a very modular fashion, which is intended to walk students through a series of mostly self-contained problem-solving exercises. Any concept that is presented is related to the projects, rather than the other way around. This style works well for a lot of people (especially in the on-campus setting for which CS50 was originally designed), but other people learn better with a concepts-first approach. Understanding your style as a student is more important, I think, than worrying about how fast you're moving.
