Why are Phd students so underpaid?

(a) It's financial aid, not salary. (b) There are so many more Ph.D. applicants than TA/RA/GA slots it's ridiculous. At U. South Carolina we get around 100 to 150 MS/PhD applicants for only 5 to 10 new TA/RA/GA slots per year. (c) Many advisors provide the ideas and provide a road map for completing the project, help with background, help with computing, spend weeks editing their students' manuscripts, and then let the student take first authorship. In such cases I feel like the student is getting the better end of the deal.

I have ADHD inattentive type, can you tell me a success story (overcoming ADHD PI) to motivate me?

Thanks for the A2AWell, the best success story I can offer is me graduating from college with B.A. in Graphic Design. It took me six years but I got through it. However, no success is possible without some struggle. I struggled very much throughout my freshman and sophomore years. The inattentiveness of course, made it difficult to pay attention in class, was an avid daydreamer, PROCRASTINATION, lack of prioritizing my classes a and had trouble comprehending the courses because it was different from what I learned in high school (in fact, I didn’t understand what a thesis for an essay was until I got into college). Math almost cost me to be put on academic probation because I kept failing the prerequisite classes in order to take college level Math. So, I swallowed my pride and started going tutoring for both English and Math, did as many extra credit assignment I could do, finally passed my pre-math courses and did well in my college leveled Math and English courses.Later on during junior and senior years school became more stressful and overwhelming. I found that I couldn’t graduate on time because several courses that I had to take that I thought were optional. My counselor told me that I was following the wrong road map or list of courses that I needed to take in order to graduate. So that added an additional two years of schooling by then my FAFSA (financial aid) and Cal Grant was depleted because I was only granted five years of financial aid and four years for the grant, I had one scholarship that barely lasted through my freshman and was unable to acquire anymore; therefore, I had to pay for everything out-of-pocket forcing me to switch from part-time to full-time at my job. As far as having a social life, it was almost non-existent.But I persevered and went on to graduate in 2013, undiagnosed may I add. I can say that it was the proudest moment of life but it was bittersweet. Thinking about it now if i could go back 10 years from now I wouldn’t have attended college. Instead, I would’ve apply to a trade school and receive a certification wielding, mechanics, or something that stimulating that would required physical work, problem solving and consistency because that’s how I cope with my systems by staying in motion. If I’m not moving unless I’m sick, I’m worried, anxious, inattentive, bored, restless and irritable. I say this because I had an epiphany one day and realized that working as a graphic designer for a company isn’t what I want to do. Instead, I rather become an entrepreneur and start my own business in fashion designing clothing with my artwork, imagination, creativity on it and not someone else’s. I realized that the way I think so far out the box with be a little too unpractical and incomprehensible to the creative director. So it’s better for me to do my own thing with some help on the side.Overall, my story is about taking time to find where my true strengths and weaknesses lie as well as taking time to find myself. My journey is far from over, in fact, I feel that it’s getting a reboot with all the lessons I’ve learned over the years to apply to my next journey. Hopefully, this helps.
