In my view, a government job is the best backup plan for those who are preparing for civil service examination. Staff Selection Commission’s CGL jobs are decent enough to hold even if one is not able to finally make it to the civil service.Secondly, one can prepare for CSE and CGL examinations simultaneously. And in any case, most of the CGL level jobs can generally take you up to the first level of CSE jobs.

Psychology was my major in school before I dropped out. Only under very specific circumstances would I recommend it.If you want to go into Psychology, plan on going for a Master’s at minimum. A PhD or PsyD are ideal. If you’re okay with being in school for 1,000 years to get there, you’re in good shape. Under these circumstances, go for it.If you don’t plan on going any further than a Bachelor’s degree, Psychology is utterly useless. There are way too many people with this degree. If you don’t make yourself stand out with a competitive edge, you’re going to have a hard time finding a good job (or any job) in your field.5/10 would recommend.

Biology: You don’t care about this degree. You just want to be a doctor.Chemistry: All the pain of biology, but add more math.Physics: It’s like engineering, but without the practicality.Psychology: You’ll learn cool stuff. It’s a shame it will all be disproved or revised in 10 years.Journalism: You came to become a better writer. You came out a better writer. Now about finding a job…Communications: It provides valuable skills for lots of jobs, but leaves you qualified for very few of them.Civil Engineering: Be ready for all the other engineers to look down upon you. For a reason.Mechanical Engineering: Get ready to look down upon civil engineers.Computer Engineering: There’s tons of potential jobs in a growing field waiting for you, assuming you make it through the minefield that is your classes.Computer Science: You’ll learn all sorts of cool programming languages that won’t be useful in 5 years.Acting: Unfortunately you couldn’t be a child actor. So you ended up here.English: Learn how to be a better writer via writing all the time. Not because you like it, but because the professors pile assignments on you.History: If you’re not planning to become a teacher, you’ve come to the wrong degree. Which makes this a bit of a pyramid scheme, come to think of it.Mathematics: Real numbers don’t exist anymore.Statistics: You now hate numbers. You’ll be stuck with them for the rest of your life.Architecture: You design the building. Other people deal with all the near impossibilities and frustrating parts your design has in it.
