The US Marines would have used more naval gunfire and would have had better fire control and communications.US battleship bombarding PeleliuCompare two landings: the invasion of Peleliu conducted by the 1st Marine Division and Omaha Beach conducted by the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions.Omaha Beach was a much bigger landing than at Peleliu. The landings at Omaha Beach were over a front of about 7000 yards versus 2000 yards at Peleliu. Two divisions with reinforcements landed at Omaha Beach, about 43,000 men, versus one division at Peleliu with 17,000 men.Here's the naval bombardment force supporting the landing at Peleliu:5 battleships with 14" - 16" guns4 heavy cruisers with 8" guns4 light cruisers with 6" guns*The pre-invasion bombardment of Peleliu lasted three days and was supported by three fleet carriers and three escort carriers.Here's the naval bombardment force supporting the landing at Omaha Beach:2 battleships with 14" guns3 light cruisers with 6" guns12 destroyers with 5" guns**The pre-invasion bombardment of Omaha Beach lasted 40 minutes. The Marines were able to call in naval gunfire and air attacks with well-practiced skill while direct fire support on Omaha Beach was mostly non-existent due to inadequate training and coordination and poor communications due to lost and destroyed radios and far too few forward fire controllers on the beaches.Comparing Omaha Beach and Peleliu is a little bit unfair. The short pre-invasion bombardment of Omaha Beach was dictated by the desire for surprise; a days long bombardment was never contemplated and would have been a dead giveaway of the location of the invasion. But a longer naval bombardment or more accurate aerial bombing could have made a big difference.However, there really was no excuse for the poor preparations for fire support, either in working out communications plans or including an abundance of fire controllers in the assault or working out plans in case communications failed.*There must have been destroyers taking part in the bombardment of Peleliu as well but I can't find how many took part.**There were also special landing craft fitted with rockets, guns and rapid fire cannon but these suffered the same communications problems as the other warships of the bombardment force.

This is all elections, right down to the local level. For most of these candidates the implication of a win is that they won a primary as well, which I don't include to avoid double-counting.
