PDF Editor FAQ

What is the best practical joke you or your coworkers did in your military career?

I was a Navy officer working at US Pacific Command HQ in Hawaii, a joint service command headed by a four-star Admiral, staffed with officers assigned from all four services. There was plenty of good-natured kidding among the officers, with the exception of an Army major who was always intense, kind of a know it all, and difficult to team with. He was getting ready to transfer soon and had just found out from his assignment officer he would be headed to Quantico VA to attend Marine Corps Command and General Staff (CGS) school, a desirable assignment. He would soon get a letter from the Marines, and orders to report for training. Naturally, he bragged a lot and was too good of a target to pass up, so I got together with a Marine officer friend, and we decided to take the Army major down a peg.My Marine friend used his connections to get some Marine Corps CGS letterhead stationary. We knew the major was a little out of shape and concerned with working out with his Marine classmates. Using the stationary, we typed up an official-looking letter from the fictitious school commander, Colonel H.S. Sanders, welcoming our friend to CGS, The letter went on to state that the major should report in good shape, as his class would be running the Marine Corps Marathon (a real event in DC each year). Furthermore, they would do so in formation. The honor of carrying the class guidon was rotated between the services, and this year it was the Army’s turn. As he was senior to the other three Army officers in the class, our major would be so honored. For further information, he could call CGS at a number we provided in the letter. The finished letter was then put in interoffice mail and delivered to the major’s desk. We let the other officers working in our section in on the joke, so they were all primed when the major opened and read the letter. The panic on his face was priceless. As we sat at our desks pretending to be busy and glancing over, we could tell that he was thinking, how could he ever finish a marathon, in formation, with Marines, while carrying the guidon and setting the pace? There was no way. He finally got up the courage to phone the contact point stated in the letter to provide some weak excuse to get out of the run. The number was to the KFC chicken outlet in Quantico. He called, identified himself, and asked to speak with Colonel Sanders. The employee told him that was very funny, but Colonel Sanders didn’t work at that KFC. As the major got red-faced and hung up, we all started laughing uncontrollably! He knew then he had been had, and of course, didn’t take it well. When the two-star Air Force general who was our immediate boss heard about it later, he also laughed and said the major had that one coming. And the general was right.

How do you handle background checks with a case pending?

When the background check is for a U.S. Government position, it is not possible to qualify or mitigate any open legal matter.A pending case may not impact the position a person is being considered for. So, check with the respective security office, to qualify this.Action for the Applicant/CandidateContinue to provide case status updates to the respective security personnel or office. If the position isn’t an immediate fill, the agency or organization may be able to wait for the pending case to close before its possible to clear the Applicant/Candidate’s Security Process, allowing their hiring process to move forward. Can you provide an example of a pending legal action?Applicant applied to work on a U.S. Government facility in Japan, but has a pending case to determine if they’ll be deported or not. Here’s a pending case that can’t be mitigated until the case has closed, and the Court has rendered a decision in the matter. If the individual gets deported—its not possible for them to work in the Country anymore, so the organization isn’t able to hire them to fill this position.Expanded Information on the topic. Some Government agencies and organizations have automatic and presumptive disqualifiers regarding Criminal Incidents. Always checks the respective agency or organization’s security office for the most current information.Past Due Debts and Federal DebtsThese issues may prevent and delay an agency or organization hiring you.*** Bankruptcy and medical debts aren’t held against a person in the background check process.***However, all other past due debts and Federal debts are relevant and may prevent an agency or organization from hiring you if you have such debt, or it exceeds a specific amount. How Do I Address and Resolve Past Due or Federal Debt?1) Be able to show the debt/ is/are being managed down or resolved over three (3) or more months. So, when asked, be able to provide hardcopy proof on the organization’s letterhead, the amount of debt, any payment plans or agreements, and current balance. Not every open legal issue will impact your hiring process. So, check with the respective security office for the most current information as it pertains to you.

What is the best branch of the military to join for someone who does not want to see combat?

Airforce dude or Coast guard if you don’t get sea sick. The Navy is okay also. But you have to sign and demand a certain MOS.I have a friend, she’s a she, a woman, She did 10 years in the US Navy as a purchase and logistics. She was always on dry land and did most of her 10 years, no all of it, in SoCal. I think she did 3–4 years at Port-Hueneme (pronounced Y-Nee-Mee); Oxnard are, which is just North of Los Angeles. Then she did the rest of her 6 years in San Diego near Mesa by the Marine Air base. She never saw combat, never left dry land, and was honorably discharged as a E5 or Chief Petty Officer. She was smart, smart, smart, she would tell the CO’s what they could do and couldn’t do according to the regulations. When they tried to F with her because she’s Asian, Chinese that’s when she got out after 10 years. Her father is a Chef in a family owned restaurant in China, so every so often she would go visit them. She even told me this, and showed me the regulation. If when you sign the contract to enter any branch of the US MILITARY; any time, any time right up to after boot camp BEFORE you receive your MOS. you can leave, walk off. Essentially go AWOL with no repercussions. If anyone is trying to tell you something different, they’re LYING to you and BLUFFING YOU or TRYING TO BLUFF YOU to Scare you.Note: I came back to add. The Airforce is best for a couple of more reasons. They get the best budget and equipment.Even during the VN war, the other branches couldn’t believe what they saw. The Airforce huts had flooring, A/C yes A/C in VN. The clubs had beer, yes beer. The Airforce use the known as the Army Air corp. And so once they were spun off they had or got the “best” of everything; Best food, best new facilities, best housing, even if / when they transfer you around the US the Airforce stay at the best Motels/Hotels just because they get better budgets than the other branches. They also get the best training, and if you’re smart, smart, smart you’ll find something that once your 4 years are up. You have a good resume to find a good civilian or Military contractor civilian job. Like computer programming, and computer support, those are generally good paying civilian jobs that you can easily transition into. Now back to my Female friend, in the US Navy as a Purchaser, she was up for “renewal” when her 6 years were up, and she decided to re-up. Why? She told me if she did 10 years, the Navy would give her twin daughters free college educations up to a B.S./B.A. College / University degree. That’s how smart and well read she was on all the regulations and benefits. Now let me also add. As a single mom of twin girls. She was very very frugal. She never ever eats out. She always cooks at home. Her dad like I mentioned was a chef in a small family mom-and-pop in China, but I swear she can smell and sometimes just taste a dish and immediately she knows what ingredients are in it. She’s an excellent cook and always always cooks at home.I don’t know how, but she must have figured out a way to get off-base rent pay help. Plus she found a way to get to an E5 quickly like by year two of her enlistment and I think they make about $60k a year. Plus the housing supplement which is another $20k I think she was I think pulling down $80k. When she was on base she would eat on base for free. And she didn’t eat much. So she was only on Base in San Diego from Mon-Fri; then she would drive up to LA and get her twins back from their dad and have them for the weekends. He took care of them on the weekdays. But I swear to you; after 10 years she was able to save about $900k. I’m currently helping her find a home in the SoCal area, which as you know the average price of homes is somewhere between $500k to $600k on the low-end. $750k to $900k on the medium-end and you can go as high as you want into the Millions for exclusive neighborhoods. But she saved all that $900k and raised two twin girls on her own for 10 years. The story is she caught her Ex cheating with another woman and dumped him. She’s only been out for about 3 years and I helped her find a job doing APICS or Purchasing and Logistics for a private company. And you should have seen the “recommendation letter her CO wrote and gave her on Navy letterhead”. I’m Like WOW! Holy Crap Batman! what a letter. And since I have a CA Real Estate broker license I’m helping her out there also.Capish?Good luck!
