To properly answer this question, we have to examine the whole situation of modern-day production of movements.As a recap, the quartz crisis has provoked enormous changes in the industry, which was made of small independent companies, many of them manufacturing their own movements.During that time, some of them closed up business. Some rationalized their proceedings, eventually ending up buying movements from specialized manufacturers (between which the most famous was ETA), and other ones ending up being absorbed by larger and more structured companies and groups.So, what happened is that a few big groups which happened to have cash ready scooped up a fair bit of those companies and brands, so to enrich their “portfolio”. And enrich they did.Nowadays, the majority of the watch brands (and we talk about European brands) belong to four main big groups: Swatch, LVMH, Richemont and Kering. The rest are small groups or individual companies.One of these is for sure Oris, which is an old company which manufactured its own movements until the Eighties, when they closed that part of the shop up and went on into manufacturing watches while buying the movements from established suppliers like ETA or Sellita.But!There is a big but. We have talked about the quartz crisis before, right? What happened iwas that not only the watch companies did suffer - and were bought by big groups - but also the specialized companies manufacturing movements were affected heavily.ETA, for example, was bought by the Swatch group, while continuing to serve the brands of the group and also other companies.But in a somewhat recent move, ETA has announced its decision to stop serving other companies outside the Swatch group - and the case has made some big waves in the horology field. So big that the Swiss government itself had to step in, requiring ETA to continue supplying movements to everyone, and only gradually pulling out of the market (by 10% yearly, if I am not mistaken) because it enjoyed a sort of dominant position as a supplier of movements.This has given other companies - and other groups - a somewhat pressing need of revving up again their movements business, something that has been somewhat dormant in the latest years, and now is bustling with activity, since the trustworthy ETAs would not be around to be mounted into watches anymore.For example the Richemont group has manufactured this new Baumatic movement, and mounted it inside the new Baume et Mercier Clifton series of watches (I have written about them here What are your thoughts on Baume & Mercier watches?) and as I can see, responded squarely on the aggressive move made by the Swatch group.So, the world of horology expects that other companies will be following suit. The age of consolidation into group - especially regarding movements - is over.And companies like Oris are bound to finally profit from this situation, maybe more than others. Being an independent company, of somewhat a lower profile than other industry players, has kept the company away from the radar of the mass of consumers, but well in evidence in the circle of connoisseurs, where Oris wayches are always received warmly and with a certain kind of loyalty and affection.In 2014 - after a long hiatus, Oris presented it new manufacture movement, the Calibre 110 (you can see it mounted in the watch on top). But Oris is not a newcomer in the field: during its history, started in 1904, and until 1982, Oris had produced no less than 229 in-house made movements.In my books, this is an amazing feat. It is almost three movements per year of its manufacturing history.Historically, neither Breitling or TAG Heuer have this kind of track record regarding calibers: Breitling used to source them from ETA and Valjoux up until 2004, when it released a manufacture caliber (a decision to supplement its production of chronographs). TAG instead riled on several suppliers, together with its own Chronomatic series… which was discontinued in the 1982, when TAG was sold. Up until 2000 when it was acquired by LVMH, and began manufacturing (again) some of its movements.So, where does this long excursus take us?To a consideration: that the Golden Age of movements is around the corner, and looks promising for every watch fan.And also, to a place where it is not the brand, but the peculiar movement that lies inside the watch that counts. Despite being more or less glam, nowadays movements are quite refined, being them in-house or supplied by an external vendor.So, if you ask my personal, gut feeling, I would bet on Oris. It is a small independent company, manufacturing its own movements nowadays, and coming from an impressive tradition and history of movement manufacturing.Look at the caliber from this Oris from the 50s: this is a rock-solid movement, built to last, and it shows. It has a house style: it really look tough.Compare it with this other: different caliber, same impression.So, my money go on those guys. Oris is a very good company, offering top-notch quality for an affordable amount of money, and my advice is to keep them in your radar for your next buys. You're asking if by the time you buy you PS4 a PS5 will be right behind it. The answer is that this is very unlikely. Lets look at the timeline:1995 September - Playstation2000 October - PS2 (+5 years)2006 November - PS3 (+6 years)2013 November - PS4 (+7 years)Sony tends to release a new console on average every 6 years, so by mid 2016 the PS4 wills till have a lot of life left in it. As rightly stated below, games are released for consoles long after they are released and well into the life of the next machine, and remain fun long after that. If you were buying the PS4 just before the PS5 was being release, id ask you to evaluate your priorities, enjoying the games or being on the cutting edge, but the PS4 is only 2 years old and remains top of the line.Of course, even older systems can retain their value and be very desirable long after they become "obsolete." Take a look at the prices on Craigslist for old NES systems. There is a whole industry around older gaming systems. In short, buy the system for the games you want to play and don't worry about being left behind, because retro gaming is awesome.
