PDF Editor FAQ

What’s the fastest you’ve wiped a smirk off of someone’s face?

Not me, but a whole bunch of wonderful, supportive co-workers.My first job out of uni was a graduate traineeship for an auto parts retailer. I knew NOTHING about cars, but I learnt how to read the various parts manuals pretty quickly thanks to a super supportive bunch of team-mates.I spent a fair bit of time on the shop floor, best way to learn the business. I was the only female in the shop other than the cashier and would often be on the service desk with one or more colleagues.Inevitably, a customer would arrive at our desk, blank me to infinity and ask my colleague about a really basic part or problem. To a man, they would smile sweetly and turn to me, ‘Kate, you’re the expert on this, what do you think?’.Let me underline, I was NOT the expert by anyone’s measure in any aspect of car maintenance or restoration but they knew what I did know and played it every chance they got.It was the best start I could have had to a crazy career and I still miss working with those guys - they were the epitome of everything great about Aussie blokes.

What would you do if everyone of your sex (except you), disappeared from Earth?

So, as a man I think this becomes an obvious thing.First I'd make sure all sperm banks kept being functional and women began to have kids through those methods.Secondly, I would of course do my job to impregnate at many women as possible to help speed along the process.I honestly don't think I'd abuse the fact I'm the only “living male” left but instead would be monogamous with the caveat of helping the world when needed with my.. umm.. services.Honestly we shouldnt see “everyone die” as usual because there's a fair amount of equality across the world which means women are equal parts nuclear physcisist and could be equal parts manual labor. We would make it through I think. But it's going to be an awkward time occasionally most years until the first “son” equals adulthood.Oh well. The chances of that happening are the chances the Patriots come back from a 3–28 in 2 quarters. Thank god that'll never happen!

Is there any merit to owning a Humvee? I’ve always liked them but on actually researching Humvee purchasing there are many who say they are junk vehicles and not worth anyone’s time. They are fairly cheap and seem pretty plentiful. Any thoughts?

Well the military HMMWV is a HEAVY vehicle, and will often find itself sinking where a lighter vehicle like a Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-150, or a Jeep Wrangler will not.I've driven my Jeep with street tires in places that we've gotten military HMMWV's stuck, and didn't have any problem getting through. An empty M1097 is 5700lbs.An unarmored M1152 is 7100lbs.The one on the left is a M1097, the right an unarmored M1152…They are also very wide vehicles, and take most of a standard road lane’s width. Subsequently, they completely fill a standard parking space.Their fuel economy (lol) is horrible, the lightest models with the 6.2L in them get at best 12 MPG… the heaviest types may only see 9 MPG.Maintenance can be a hassle, you'll need to do a lot of it yourself, as most shops won't touch them, as a local police station found out around here…I work as a military technician at a Field maintenance shop, and there are many times the military supply system is out of, or will take months to get us, a part. We have gone to NAPA and bought water pumps, various drivetrain components, etc. And had motors, and transmissions rebuilt at local shops on occasion, after we pulled them from the vehicle. As a note, often NAPA autoparts has many parts that will fit a military HMMWV but you may need to search them by engine type or work with the parts guys to match it up, though the military parts manual lists Part-#’s alongside the military NSN, and sometimes these can be cross-referenced.The motor is a basic GM 6.2L or 6.5L, with no emissions controls. Some models are turbocharged; that specific turbo might be difficult to find, as it's built to mount on the intake manifold. The transmission is either a 3L80, 4L80, or 4L85. Advantageously, it can be serviced at most transmission shops that work on GM.The types with the non-turbo motors and a 3L80 trans max out at about 55–60 mph. The 4L80 and 4L85 at about 65–70 mph. However, the power steering system is attached to the brake booster; and yeah this is one stupid setup, since it fails often. So no power steering = no brakes.Speaking about the brakes, the brake rotors are located next to the differential with the axle after, so when you come to a stop you'll rock back and forth a bit on the play in the CV and universal joints that are on the axle.Overall, they're over-complicated, over-weight fuel hogs. Their off road performance is ok, but not great. And really if you’re not a military vehicle collector, it's probably better to go for something else.
