Interviewed for the Software development engineer Test position in Bangalore,IndiaThe recruiter contacted and after making a quick background check he arranged for a phone screen. The phone screen had basic scripting questions and also programming questions and I did well so I was invited for an onsite interview.I had 5 1:1 interviews. All were technical and programming based on algorithm and data structures. Two were with SDETs, one with hiring manager,one with senior development manager and one was with general manager. I expected GM to ask culture fit ques. But to my surprise he asked me more technical focussing on data structures, modelling and complexity related questions,There was a local de-breif and they were good except that I did not know much on company and asked to read them and they arranged for 2 US phone rounds and HR told that will be the final rounds.They focused on few programming and automation framework related questions.First interviewer was good. But the second interviewer did not ask much challenging questions and there is nothing to do with much logic(technical lead for the project- the very very average interview in the whole interview process). Meanwhile HR requested for the payslips and my compensation details and he was quite positive.Then suddenly after 2 days the HR and hiring manager called me and said they wanted me to wait for 2 months since now they are looking for people strong in automation frameworks in UI and senior level. I mentioned that was not put in the job description and my resume clearly says I had no experience in UI automation and also clearly says I am not a lead.But when u want UI automation engineers why was the interview not focused on that and only on programming and Data structures?? It makes no perfect sense. And when all other interviewers are positive why is one interview the deciding factor?? The feedback was very good and exceptional in coding ,problem solving and DS. But UI and web service testing knowledge is limited and scope of entering company only after 2 months!!! :p...But should understand if a person is good logically and programming is good not a big deal to do with UI and web service testing. I just felt it was mere waste of my time and mind into the process. I accept the interviews except the last one with the lead in US was quite interesting and challenging. But I see some confusion in the over all hiring strategy !! One person decision influencing the whole interview loop!! If this continues they will keep losing good candidates because of bad interviewer!!I sent a detailed mail to HR why did not make the correct resume selection and waste other's time?? I had a very bad experience . A full day interview full of programming and a late night call 10-12 PM with US and finally a useless reason for wait. I mailed HR i am no more interested to wait and join the organisation please proceed with the other candidates.Over all a very bad frustrating experience

What was your lowest point as a software developer?
I was kicked out without any notice from a project in a very average IT services company because of my incompetency as a Software Engineer.This happened close to 9+ years ago. It was my first job after college and I was working for Infosys.I was working in Bangalore office for a telecom client.Primarily work was on Java working on some proprietary softwares.In most cases work would look like this:There were very specific procedures on how to modify any code change. Typically the actual code was also provided. All we had to do was take the code and make changes in the right section of the software. Commit the code and push it to testing.All of these we were doing in development environments without any access to production environments.Extremely basic, follow the rules to the t kind of job. Whatever I will do will also get validated by a Team Lead.I worked on this project for almost a year. And then we got a new manager.It was a secured zone inside the office. So after we enter the campus, we have to swipe our badge again to get access to my location. It was extra secure.One fine day I walk in and I find my badge not letting me go in through the inner door.Obviously I thought something malfunction and waited for someone to let me get in.Once I get in, I find someone else’s stuff on my desk. That’s the desk I left at 6 PM the previous night and it was only 9:30 in the morning. It was incredible.Long story short, I was soo incompetent according to my new manager that he decided I need no notice before I can be kicked out.I was kicked out of the project just like that. I still had a job, but I was on bench. I could not muster the courage to go and talk to any of the colleagues, I was soo ashamed.And this was my first job, my first project in the real world.I had very very little self confidence left after that.Today, however when I look back on that incident I feel soo thankful. It’s because of that incident I lost any appetite for large IT companies or working on client project.Overall it has served me well.EDIT: Some people are confused by my comment about not to work in I.T. company, but still I work for Google - a software product company. Let me clarify.There are two kinds of companies in the software world. One group of companies primarily builds the softwares and are colloquially known as Software companies or product companies. Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Google, Evernote, Oracle, Salesforce will fall in this category.There is another huge sector who primarily provide services to maintain and manage softwares created by others. These types of companies are colloquially known as I.T. companies or services companies. Companies like Accenture, TCS, CTS, Infosys, IBM global Services etc. all fall in this category.My comment was about the latter category and that I want to stick to the former category. Often time it is a very difficult switch.A parallelism that I can draw is with the Automobile industry. You have car manufacturers like Volvo, Skoda, Volkswagen, GM etc. The people working there are actually designing and manufacturing the cars. But there is a huge industry of car service stations and dealers around the world. It’s the latter where you typically need lot more people but may not need engineers or designers. When you are a mechanic in a services industry you are following the instructions of the manufacturer and you have to be a perfectionist in doing that, but you are never designing the software or writing those manuals. Both of those roles are critical and dependent on each another for success. But different skillsets and mindsets are needed to be successful in each of them.My failure in one of those roles of I.T service sector made me realize I suck in that ecosystem and I have to pursue a role in the other sector.-SaGa
