PDF Editor FAQ
Should I go to the medical lab technician (MLT) program then start my major preparation to transfer to a university or just skip the MLT program?
It’s not a great transfer strategy, but it might be a good life strategy. The general intuition is that, if you are ROI focused, you are better off finishing any program faster than finishing a particular slower. See Michael O'Brien's answer to What about going to college is rarely talked about? My guess is that you want to to be a Medical Laboratory Scientist (Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist) as an end goal, you realized there is a lot of overlap between the two courses of study. The MLS credential rather smoothly flows from the MLT credential. As a life strategy this is pretty good, you could spend three years earning a certificate without a degree and use that to find gainful work. From there, you can enroll in a “top-off” bachelors degree, slowly chipping away at that over no fewer than two years provided you are working in a laboratory that is large enough to give you the clinical experience in the required fields. You can take the MLS exam and become a scientist. As a transfer strategy, this is probably a very bad idea for several reasons: 1) your MLT courses won’t transfer and you will have to retake them in your MLS program - so, you are essentially wasting 18 months of your life except for the phlebotomy training course - which you could have done earlier; 2) you need to take a lot of community college courses in order to get very few transfer credits. For instance, if you were trying to transfer from the MLT program at Folsom Lake College to the CLS program at CSU Dominguez Hills you would need to take a 15-credit three course sequence of biology courses with a lab to get credit for a two semester eight credit sequence at CSU-DH. If you want to get an associates degree (why) or complete lower lever core requirements, plan on another 1–2 semesters. It’s a really inefficient way to go.If you are open to joining the Army Reserve and serving at Walter Reed, the Army will pay for you to get an associates degree and an MLT certification and then let you use that skill part-time in Bethesda, MD. I don’t know if that job is open at MEPS, but if so, that is a great find. From there you can finish your degree at George Washington University - the Army has a pathway for this. The University of North Dakota has a similar program. In any case, I wish you well.
How hard is it to transfer to a state university from a community college?
As with many things, it depends! In California, there is established program in most community colleges meeting basic classes to meet transfer requirements to UC, CSU, and CSC. Other states may not have this as tightly programmed or view community colleges as more a vocational track intended to conclude with the Associate Degree or other certification short of a Bachelor Degree.Santa Monica, Glendale, and Pasadena are reputed to be highly successful for some students with this goal while still supporting vocational education in computing, air craft maintenance, medical/dental assistant, or nursing (what used to be LVN).Discuss the situation with the counseling department of the CC and ask for data on numbers who make transfer and which institutions have accepted transfers. It depends v
Does community college offer a lower quality education than a traditional college?
The answer is probably no, but it depends on how you assess quality.LEVEL: Few community colleges are allowed to grant BA degrees, so they are usually limited to AA degrees and career certificates. In California, only about a half dozen CCs can offer BAs (and only in specialized fields like fire science), whereas the CSUs are limited to BAs and masters degrees (with a few exceptions for the Ed.D.) and it is only the UC campuses that offer doctoral, medical and law degrees.CONTENT: CCs must maintain articulation agreements with the state university system, so the content of General Psychology needs to be the same whether it is taught at a CC, CSU or UC in order for the course to transfer inter-segmentally.INSTRUCTORS: Here CCs may be superior. We don’t use TAs. Each academic class is taught by someone with at least a masters degree (frequently a doctorate), and faculty are selected on the basis of their teaching skills (not research fame).STUDENTS: The UC system accepts the top 10% of California’s high school students, the CSU system accepts the top quarter, and the CC system accepts everyone, so you will definitely have more capable classmates at a UC compared to a CC, but given the content articulation agreements, instructors cannot water down the course. This means that, in practice, there are high rates of withdrawal and failure: most CC students do not get through the college math sequence. On the other hand, there are courses where the CC students are better. Most of my students in developmental psyc (an online course) are already working as EMTs, paramedics, fire fighters, psych techs, CNAs, LVNs and even some RNs. They need the course for the next degree (BSN, MSN). So, the quality of discussion is great because students are relating the content to their work.
