Which college should I choose: NUJS Kolkata and NLU Jodhpur?

Hey,Since I am a current student at NUJS and have got some decent information about NLUJ, I think I am a well equipped person to answer this question. There are quite a few differences between the two colleges, but it's a fact that NUJS is number 3, though NLUJ is not far behind.I will try to compare all the factors which may influence student's choice of college between both these law schools. Also I'll rate each factor out of 5.Residential facilities:-NUJS:-For residential purposes, NUJS has 6 floored boys hostel, with each floor having 26 single rooms and 12 double sharing rooms. Generally 2nd years, few 1st years and very few 3rd years get double sharing rooms. People from 3rd year onwards get single rooms whereas some 1st years have to manage with triple sharing rooms. Each room will have a single bed for each person, a table, a chair and a cupboard.Besides the hostel, other residential facilities include the Warden's flat, a two storied building with 8 flats in it. Out of the 8 flats, 6 are available for the students of 1st years and remaining 2 for the wardens and their families. Each flat has a hall and 2 bedrooms. Hall has 4 single beds in four corners of it, which means it accomodates 4 people. Each guy again gets a separate table, chair and cupboard. The hall also contains 1 Indian style washroom with shower facility and a balcony for drying clothes. The 2 bedrooms accomodate 2 people each, with one of the bedroom containing an attached western style washroom and has a balcony too. So each flat is shared by 8 people. If there are 6 flats, that makes 48 people.Remaining first years are accomodated in hostel or in dormitories, which is wholly Air-conditioned which rooms unfortunately aren't.So, students in hostel rooms and Warden's flats generally buy a pedestal fan too because ceiling fans won't be of much help in humid Kolkata weather. All other stuff of basic necessity such as bucket, mug, plates, spoons, shelves, racks etc. can be bought from either the campus in 1st week of admission process or from nearby markets throughout the year. Each hostel floor has washrooms, both Indian and Western style of toilets, shower taps and geysers. Besides this, each floor also has a common micro wave oven, a RO water Cooler and a common wash basin. The facilities given to boys hostel extend to girls hostel as well. The infrastructure is almost same and dorms too are almost same. Only difference is that the students of female gender aren't alloted flats and each floor has a sanitary napkin dispenser.NLUJ:-In NLUJ, every student is alloted single room with adequate space for a cupboard, a table, a chair and a spacious balcony (a notable absentee at NUJS). The students are allowed to keep coolers as per their convenience. Apart from that facility of room cleaning than be availed daily at NLUJ. Water coolers are there on each floor and a floor can also pool the money for washing machine if they wish to buy it. There are washrooms on each floor. The same facilities also extend to girls hostel at NLUJ.So the only major difference between the two law colleges as far as residential facilities is concerned is that NLUJ allots single rooms from 1st year itself, which generally maintains privacy but can also make one feel lonely. The greatest advantage of a single room is that the room alloted to you in the 1st year will be only your toom till the end of 5th year. You can keep it and decorate it as you like. Also you are prevented from hassles of moving rooms each year, which is quite a tough task at NUJS as you need to transfer all stuffs all again tk another room in each year.So I'll give 2.5 to NUJS and 4 to NLUJ as far as residential facilities are concerned.2. Location:-NUJS:-This is one area in which NUJS literally scores the highest. After a certain point of time, you may feel the benefits of living in the city. You can go out of campus anytime before 12midnight, come in the campus all 24 hours, visit restaurants, bars, stadiums, arenas, banquets, tourism places etc. anytime throughout the year. You might also stay in hotels if you want a change from hostel rooms. You can also opt not to stay in hostels and opt for PGs outside. In short nobody cares how you live at NUJS. It's the coolest law college and the best located one.It is well connected through bus to Almost all areas of Kolkata. The facility of cabs is there 24×7 and you may also bring your own vehicles inside the campus. The metro station in the area is under construction and will be completed soon. There are 3–4 malls near the campus within a range of 5 Kms like City Centre, Mani Square, Big Bazaar. SAI campus and Salt Lake Stadium is situated at walking distance. Two of the best hotels in India, i.e. Hyatt and ITC Sonar are also at the walking distance and so are the tourist places like Science City and Nicco Park. Also if you want to watch iconic Kolkata Durga Puja at midnights or an epic International or IPL match at Eden, then NUJS is your place.Location is unarguably the best part of NUJS right now.NLUJ:-NLUJ is 12 km away from the main city of Jodhpur. Curfew timings are not as relaxed at NUJS. Being far from the city certainly restricts student's movements as cabs will be very costly for a student to commute daily. Also Jodhpur is not as big as Kolkata, which means there are fewer attractions and less diversity. Besides that Jodhpur is not as well connected as Kolkata to other major cities and towns of India. State capital Jaipur is at a road distance of about 6 hours which is a long time.So in location, NUJS scores 5 and NLUJ a 2.3. Food:-NUJS:-NUJS has a common mess for both boys and girls. It is managed by a student body named Mess Committee. The mess is situated on the ground floor of the boys hostel. Students are served meals four times a day. Breakfast is served from 8–10 am, Lunch from 12–2:30pm, Snacks from 4–6pm and Dinner from 8–10 pm. There is alternate menu for every week, meaning 1st and 3rd week of the will have 1 menu and 2nd and the 4th week will have other menu. Menu is both veg as well as non-veg. Pure veg is available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, while Non-Veg lunch is available on Wednesday and Sunday, Non-Veg Breakfast on Wednesday, Non-Veg snacks on Sunday and Non-Veg dinner on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. There is also a special provision for Jain food if you want subscribe for it. You will also get to drink 1 packet of milk daily, if you subscribe for it after paying a subsidized fee.Mess food is generally found monotonous by students after a certain point of time. So, students are free to eat at Canteen named Little Sisters Snacks Corner, which serves South Indian, Chinese and North Indian cuisines of food from 9 am to 9 pm. The students can also eat snacks from the small lorries and stalls which are situated just outside the side gate of the campus. In addition, you can also opt for online food delivery through Zomato, Swiggy, UberEats and Food Panda, it is available 24×7.Students can also keep an electric kettle with them, which is of immense help during exams to prepare a cup of black coffee, maggie, pasta, oats and even Upma. You can also keep an induction stove in your room and are also allowed to cook your own food in the mess kitchen.During exams there is a concept of night mess which functions from 9pm to 5am in the morning. It sells maggie, rolls, bread toasts, tea, coffee, biscuits, wafers and ice-creams on payment basis. The best thing about NUJS is there are lots of restaurants nearby. These also include pure veg restaurants like Baati-Chokha, Fly Kouzina, Jalapenos, Rajdhaani etc.So food generally is not an issue at NUJS as you have plenty of options. Also if you have a huge pocket, then you can escape from mess daily without any other issue, bur you will of course be charged mess fees at the time of admission.NLUJ:-NLUJ doesn't have a uniform mess system which is there at NUJS. Students here get meal on daily payment basis. The University has hired two caterers to provide food daily to students. So you get the opportunity to choose your food for each meal. The menu of both the caterers is different, hence you can pick and choose as per your liking. There is also one caterer who provides non vegetarian meal on daily payment basis. Besides it, the ice-creams and packet of chips or wafers are available 24×7, so you can buy them whenever you want.Hence, there is more variety available at NLUJ, but you can opt for any choice by ordering from restaurants at NUJS. It won't be a major issue anywhere.I'll give NUJS a 3 in food and NLUJ a 4.4. Campus:-This is one thing in which NLUJ clearly races ahead of NUJS.NUJS:-NUJS has a 5 acre campus and is situated on the service road of Eastern Metropolitan (E.M) Bypass at Sector 3, Salt Lake City in Kolkata. Due to it being in one of the posch area of the city, the small campus is still acceptable. The campus has the following facilities-6 floored boys Hostel6 floored Girls Hostel2 floored Warden's flat3 floored academic block with Moot Court Halls, Class Rooms, Cultural Rooms, Guest Rooms, Faculty Rooms, Day Zero Rooms, Auditorium and all other types of rooms required.A grand and lavish library with more than 45000 volumes on books of law, humanities, social sciences, national and international journals etc. It also hosts computer centre which is a must for students if in case their laptop breaks down during memo submissions or project submissions.Printing facility and XeroxA CanteenA U-Wash named laundry which offers facility of washing and ironing of clothes on payment basis. Minimum limit is 6kg clothes for Rs 210.An on-campus bank. There is a branch of Corporation Bank inside the NUJS campus. Also other major banks like HDFC, SBI, Axis etc. are very near from the campus.A small basketball courtA Lawn Quadrangle in the Academic Block. You can play football, sometimes cricket, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Kho-Kho and also do casual sporting practice in it.A Gymnasium which has been reconstructed and redeveloped very recently and has all types of modernised workout machines.A recreation room which is open 24×7. It has carrom board, foosball table, pool table, a Table Tennis table, a Chess Board and Billiards Table. It is fully air-conditioned.A music room where students play drums, guitar, harmonium, pianos etc.Blue-Dart Courier services on a subsidized rate.24×7 Wifi at a rapid speedBesides these things, medical facility is available on campus where the in-house doctor is available for consultation from Monday to Friday between 5–6 pm. Medicines can be delivered 24×7 by nearest Frank Ross Medical Shops. There is also availability of trained counsellors and psychologist to help manage stress on weekends. 3 of the city's major hospitals, i.e. Apollo, AMRI and Colombia Asia are at a walking distance.NUJS also has a tie up with Sports Authority of India, whose facilities are right next to the campus (at a distance of about 500 metres). NUJS collaborates with SAI to avail its playgrounds and training centers where students train after paying nominal fees.Every major sporting event like FIFA WC, Cricket World Cup etc. is live streamed on big screen in auditorium. There is a TV in mess too, which can be used anytime. So this is all about the NUJS campus, which is small but very lively and easily one of the most accessible and well surrounded college campuses in India. Also to be honest the benefits of small campus is realised when you are getting late for your 1st class. If your class starts at 9:30, you might directly wake from your bed at 9:25 and reach the class before 9:30.NLUJ:-NLUJ has 55 Acres campus, a 11 time larger one than NUJS campus. Some facilities which are additional at NLUJ is presence of a Guest House in it, where parents and family members of the students can live when the visit NLUJ. Visiting as well as Guest Faculty stay in Guest House. This is a good facility in NLUJ because if parents do visit students at NUJS, they have to stay in hotels.NLUJ also has world class sporting facilities inside the campus which provides opportunities for growth of extra-curricular talent. The university has a badminton court open till 10pn daily and is furnished with proper lighting mechanism and synthetic tracks.NLUJ also has a in-campus faculty residence as well as separate faculty chambers with internet connection, sound sitting arrangement and common faculty pantry. Attached to the faculty campus is the meeting hall where all meetings of faculty takes place. There is an ampi-theatre and General stores for buying things of daily needs inside the campus of NLUJ.NUJS scores a 2.5 in campus and NLUJ a 5. However there are indeed benefits of NUJS campus as I mentioned earlier.5. Placements:-NUJS:-NUJS has had much better placements than NLUJ in the last 4 years. Around 40 students of 2020 batch had already secured PPOs (Pre Placement Offer) from top law firms and had another 45 Day Zero Offers. Students in NUJS have got placed in TriLegal, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB, Khaitan, Luthra, ICICI, L&L Partners, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Indus, Argus etc.Similarly 90+ students of 2018 batch were placed in top law firms and another and the figure was more or less same in 2019. So, every body who opts to sit for placements gets placed at NUJS. The average salary ranges from about 16–18 lakhs per annum in Indian law firms.Around 5–6 students every year are also recruited by top Foreign Law firms like HSF, Allen and Ovary, McLoids and Linklaters. So, NUJS is the place for you if you want to guarantee a good placement at a top law firm.NLUJ:-NLUJ has also seen a good placement record at recent times, though it is no where close to 100% placements. In the 2020 batch at NLUJ, 42 students got placed out of the 60 which opted for placements. Total strength of batch in NLUJ is 101. Out of the 42 students, 23 were PPOs and remaining Day Zero Placements as well as after vacation schemes in International Law firms. The difference between NUJS and NLUJ can be gauged by the stat that TriLegal made 21 placement offers at NUJS and only 7 Placement offers at NLUJ.Nevertheless the average package at both the places are almost same, though it depends on your interview and CV on the day of Day Zero. So, NUJS scores 5 and NLUJ a 3.5 in placements.6. Administration:-Since you mentioned the instability of VC in your question, I'll evaluate this as a factor.NUJS:-NUJS indeed has infamous track record in administration since the PIB era and after the ouster of PIB too things have not gone as well as expected. The Acting VC has not been a man of action and hence so many reforms in college could not take place. However there is some positive news. A new and permanent VC has been appointed by the Chancellor of NUJS, i.e. Hon'ble CJI of India Mr. Ranjan Gogoi. Mr NK Chakrabarti is soon in line to take over the administration of NUJS as new VC.Mr. NKC is not going to be good as the Late Prof. Madhav Menon or Mr. MP Singh, nonetheless, he might be way better than PIB and Mr. Amit Talukdar. With the appointment of new VC, the appointment of new registrar is presumably not far away and this wi bring stability to the college. Things are bound to improve at NUJS.However you must also keep in mind, that even after a supposedly weak administration, NUJS still gets highest placements and well rounded students. It's because of hardwork and dedication of the student body SJA and the RPCs of the batches. SJA tried its best to ensure students don't get affected by weak administration. Along with it a strong and efficient student body which NUJS has plays a very important role to negotiate for curfew and library timings at NUJS and for better facilities for students. Also remember NUJS carries the legacy of Prof Menon, the father of modern Indian Legal Studies and Prof. MP Singh. Alumni at NUJS play a very important role in shaping the college and prevent it from going on a downward spiral like HNLU or even NLIU.NLUJ:-NLUJ has Prof Poonam Saxena as VC and Soham Lal Sharma as Registrar. This administration, even though have been non-controversial have failed to keep a high standard of NLUJ which it was during Prof. N.L Mitra's time. Prof. Mitra was well known for his trademark work ethics and great intellect and NLUJ hence gave the top 4 NLUs then (NLS, NALSAR, NUJS and NLIU) a run for their money. Since the tenure of Prof. Mitra, the ride has been rocky. There have been no infamous controversies at NLUJ during the tenure of current administration, but it'll be better if you ask a current NLU J student about their tenure. One another thing which is to be kept in mind is that NLUJ is only top NLU to have no domicile reservations as yet, so quality will be better than say GNLU, which has 45 domicile seats. NUJS currently has around 10 domicile seats, the new bill for increasing domicile quota upto 30% has been put on hold as of now.NLUJ student body is also not as strong as the one in NUJS. Rather there is no official representative student association at NLUJ to be honest and this severely lessens the scope of negotiation with the authorities.I'll give NUJS a 2 and NLUJ a 3.5 in college administration and NUJS a 4.5 and NLUJ a 2 in power of student body.7. Courses Offered:-You can look courses offered from 2 points of view. 1st view point will be which graduation stream is offered along with LLB and 2nd view point will be to analyse the electives offered as well as course structure. I'll try to analyse through both the viewpoints.NUJS:-NUJS only offers BA-LLB Hons. Course. There is no provision for BBA, BSC, BCom, BSW or any other graduation course. But the courses/ subjects offered in BA won’t be too heavy. You will be required to study Sociology, Political Science, English- Language and Literature, Economics and Legal and Constitutional history as part of B.A curriculum. Out of these subjects, English and political science are chill, only Arts subjects on which you need to pay more attention will be Sociology and Economics. Also, it’s a general belief that graduation in BA serves you better if you are pursuing LLB as a professional course. On the other hand, NUJS is just fabulous if you look from the viewpoint of course structure and electives offered. It is one of rare NLUs in which students are required to study complete Law of Contracts, Indian Penal Code and Marriage and Divorce part of family law in 1st year itself. To compare, Family Law is taught in 3rd year in GNLU. This extra knowledge in complicated subjects give NUJS an edge as students can focus on specialization later and can also study vast number of other subjects.NUJS offers unique electives like Interface between Fantasy Fiction Literature and Law (A course where Harry Porter tales of Rowling’s Potterverse is given emphasis upon), Outer Space Law, Criminology and Victimology, Sports Law, Law and Impoverishment, Maritime Law, Forest Law, Forensics, Media Law etc. Some of these courses are taught only at NUJS throughout the whole country.NLUJ:-NLUJ offers graduation in BBA Hons. in addition to BA Hons. allomg with LLB. This is definitely advantageous to students from commerce background as students get opportunity to study management, finance, operation management etc. instead of Sociology, History and Political science. This may give student an escape from mugging sociological theories Weber and Marx or the political theories of Austin and Partho Chatterjee. But it is also important to know that political science will play an important role to understand framing of law as is made by our politicians. Also every law subject at NLUJ has timely Court Room Exercises as part of syllabus. These CREs are like mini moot court exercises and help in a huge way to get practical knowledge of each subject of law. NLUJ is the only NLU to have such exercises as part of the curriculum. But, the electives offered at NLUJ are nowhere as varied and as different as at NUJS. Gender Justice, Penology, Forensic Science are some of the subjects mentioned as Electives. So, NUJS will offer to much greater freedom to get specialised in the subject of your choice. Electives are offered at NUJS from 6th Semester on wards. Honestly the graduation stream won’t matter much as generally the Arts or Management subjects get over by 4th semester or maximum by 5th semester.NUJS scores a 4.5 in course structure and NLUJ a 3. I paid greater attention to electives and specialization offered than the streams available.8. College Life:-Well, you might have heard the phrase ‘College Life Na Milegi Dobara’ (You won’t get college life again) time and again from friends, peers, movies and even parents and teachers. Hence, experience of college life as a whole is definitely a factor in choosing colleges.NUJS:-NUJS unarguably is the coolest Law college throughout India. Everything is chill at NUJS. Great party scenes, frequent DJ parties even inside the campus, great bunch of people all around and in one word a cherishing experience of college life.NUJS has numerous fests throughout the year. Noojies await for the ‘Outlawed’ the grand cultural fests of NUJS which sees participation from law schools across India. Sporting fest of ‘Invicta’ is also eagerly awaited and so do the after parties of each competition.Indeed, the majority of the parties will be wet, but people can stay dry if they wish to (I always do as a teetotaler). Students in NUJS live as a community as the college is very small and hence you won’t be isolated as there will be people all around you.NUJS also gives you freedom to do whatever you want to do. You can go to classes wearing shorts, can bunk classes, walkout of Contracts class, stay in library whole night, climb the walls to go out of college after 1 am, go to nearby tourist cities like Puri, Henry Islands or Sunderbans on a weekends etc.In short you won’t be judged at NUJS. You’ll live enjoy a great college life with excellent studies and great exposure.NLUJ:-The culture at NLUJ too is positive and vibrant. However it is not as liberal as NUJS. People from happening cites, generally face issues dealing with quietude. But if you want peace and want to avoid pollution, then NLUJ will be better for you than NUJS.NUJS is in middle of busy E.M bypass, and hence pollution will be as high as it is in cities, but it will be exactly opposite at NLUJ.So, NUJS scores a 5 in overall college experience and NLUJ a 3.But if I were to give a separate rating on environmental conditions, NUJS will be worse than NLUJ because of huge pollution, problems of mosquito breeding and high humidity in Kolkata, which I feel is worse to manage than scorching summer heat at Jodhpur. For environmental conditions in campus, I’ll give NUJS a 1 and NLUJ a 4.Conclusion:-Total Score out of 50 in all the the 10 factors-NUJS =2.5 + 5 +3 + 2.5 + 5 + 2 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 5 + 1 = 35/50NLUJ=4 + 2 + 4 + 5 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 4 = 34/50So, in a nutshell, the difference is literally a matter of 1 point. Both colleges are excellent, it just depends what are you looking to get from a college. If your aim is placements, don’t think twice before going to NUJS, but in case you hate B.A. subjects or want to live a peaceful life with less people around, then NLUJ is your place. Also I have not compared faculty as a factor because at both places, you’ll find some great professors, some fairly decent ones and some bad ones. Nothing to compare in faculty. Please upvote in large numbers and share this answer to as many CLAT aspirants as you can. Also you can DM me for further query about NUJS.Regards,Deepanshu Agarwal,BA-LLB Hons. from NUJS (2023 batch).
