It tends to gloss over some of the debates which are still ongoing but only to maintain a cohesive narrative.47. A Little History of the World by Gombrich, E.H. ( 1936)It is essentially a summary of human history to around the 1930s. It's aimed perfectly at interested children, and manages to be accessible and entertaining without being condescending.48. The Party: The Secret World of China's Communist Rulers by McGregor, Richard ( 2010)Never before has there been such an amazing in depth look at the inner workings of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) before the publishing of this book. McGregor's work was cut out for him because the CCP is probably one of the most secretive political regimes ever. Most Chinese people don't even know how many departments and adminstrative bodies there are, or which ones belong to the 'government' and which belong to the Party. McGregor dives deep and brings up a treasure trove of knowledge about the mechanics of the strange political system where the Party is the government while pretending not to be, putting faces to names and names to faces, and the corruption that runs to the very core of the system. He provides history and analysis while his masterful writing prevents it all from burying the reader.49. India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy by Guha, Ramachandra ( 2007)One of the few histories of post-independence India, this gives a vivid account of India's "tryst with destiny" and the problems/challenges it faced as a newly independent country.50. Should villains be given a backstory to explain why they are evil?

(am sure you know this)ie - There's no reason why it can't be interesting that, we never know why the villain is evil, as in that case, we mostly usually just assume "Oh well, I guess some folks are just: all messed up"...Also `ambiguity and complexity' according to Martindale (1990) - The Clockwork Muse, is a sign of creativity (ie artworks that are ambiguous can tend to be regarded better, critically, but - there's a caveat, it has to be good ambiguity - and the whole work still has to `work'...)ie There are also lots of bad screenplays (and, movies) that are: ambiguous (in many details, including why the villain/s is (or, are) evil).It's not the ambiguity that makes them `bad' as artworks, it's just that they're bad screenplays, regardless (ie - taking out the ambiguity wouldn't fix all the problems)ie So - it's back to the Anna Karenina principle... :)So I see no reason why you can't have:(1) A clear reason given (eg: flashback to some weird childhood trauma, or whatever) why the villain turned bad (but try and make it fascinating / unusual / radical / fresh / surprising - yet still believable)or(2) No reason, he's just a psychopath, ie crazy (eg - The Joker - "Ya wanna know how I got these scars?") The dude just loves messing with people as he's antisocial. He loves lying or whatever. He's just a sadist, etcor even(3) A reason he's a psychopath (eg Michael Myers is diagnosed as crazy as a kid, and is locked away. But - the problem-situation really `begins', when he escapes... and comes home...)- It all depends what you want to do.If you want to build a whole movie (story) around an evil villain, and have the `key question' of the film (for, the audience) : "Why exactly, is this villain so evil? How did he get that way" you certainly can.People love guessing stuff (see: Gottschall 2012, The Storytelling Animal) on `the little Sherlock Holmes inside everyone's head' (ie Gazzaniga's research etc)Also, people seem to love `single-cause explanations' (a huge fallacy, usually) - and this is what the Anna Karenina principle is an antidote to, of course...ie Why was Hitler so evil?(Is there one single cause? Also, the dude got `Man of the Year' on Time mag before he went full-psycho, and he won the equivalent of 2 purple hearts when he was a soldier... and even begged to stay at the front (in the war) so he could fight and kill more people... (maybe he was always a murdering psycho ? )But the German nation saw him as a massive (national) war-hero, after the 2 x German `purple hearts' - and before he went fully nuts, and started doing genocide... and trying to install the Thousand Year Reich... )So you can mess around with perspective on evil, a lot.(Though Hitler was: empirically, evil.)I (personally) love stories where, the more scenes go by, the more it flip-flops your current judgement on the character...(ie Scene #1 - He's clearly evil. But - then, (surprise/twist/reversal!) Scene #2 reveals new information that makes you think, he's good - since you now have new information that changes everything. But Scene #3 - even more info is revealed - and suddenly you change your mind: he's evil again! Scene #4 gives (reveals) still more (and different) info and suddenly, he's a good guy, and - repeat forever - etc)[or - at least - repeat, until the movie story ends]Darth Vader, as a character, is "executed" just like that, right?In the Episodes #4-5 (Star Wars: A New Hope, and Empire) he's pretty much, pure evil (ie - an intergalactic Hitler), but - at the end of #6, he redeems himself (ie = the death scene, `take my mask off', etc).Yet - then, later (which - is actually earlier, ie - his childhood/ teen years) in Eps 1-3, we see: how he got that way, and that he wants to free the slaves and whatnot, and basically, like in The Searchers, the Tusken Raiders kill his mom - so, he turns evil - or at least racist (ie evil!), and then, there's the whole love-story thing (he turns to the dark side just to save Padme, ie `true love almost conquers even death' etc).So, anyway, it's a general question - but the specific right answer is all dependent on the specific problem-situation you face, in your own story - or screenplay / movie...ie Sometimes, it's great to have a villain backstory (as long as: it's great! ie as long as the details are: awesome)But sometimes: who cares, the bad guy is a psycho.It's basically just: a birth defect.
