Um ok, valedictorian here…I’d like to think I did okay. After high school, I attended Yale and got a bachelors in Computer Science with honors. I applied to grad school in CS, and a few decent offers, and ended up getting my PhD from UC Berkeley in CS. I was moderately successful at Berkeley, didn’t have the string of papers at the absolute top conferences, but I did manage to co-invent a new research area (DHTs or structured P2P networks) with my advisors and 3 competing groups at MIT, Rice/MSR and AT&T Research. The work was highly cited (my top paper at the time was an a tech report and journal paper that were cited 4000+ times when I graduated), and got me multiple faculty job offers in 2004, when CS hiring was tight, and most schools had 1 open spot with several hundred applicants. After 13 years at UCSB (getting tenure then promotion to Full), I accepted a chaired professor position at University of Chicago.I enjoy my work immensely, and am extremely happy with what I’ve been able to do and the opportunities that have been available to me thus far.Advantages? No, being valedictorian does not get you much in terms of advantages. Compared to lots of other college applicants with (near-)perfect GPAs, it was just another bullet on the application form. Nobody at Yale, Berkeley, or in my academic research circles ever ask me if I was valedictorian, and up until a random conversation a year ago, my wife didn’t know either. It’s a great honor, but not one that matters much after graduation. Everything I’ve achieved after HS, I’ve had to work for (and get a fair bit of luck), just like everyone else.What the valedictorian title does is validate, in a fairly small way, what is already there. The same study habits and personality traits that helped someone stay focused in HS (and become valedictorian) are similar/same as the habits and traits that will help them succeed later in life.In other words, there is likely correlation between being named valedictorian, and later success in life, but not causation.

You could conceivably learn around 12 new skills during that time at a lazy pace, or around 24 with the same time commitment as a full-time job (40 hours per week).That said, I would highly recommend the skill of "learning how to learn".
