PDF Editor FAQ

Are there any games which teachers can play in front of students on Teachers Day and enjoy the game?

My pod (teaching team of three teachers in a modified middle school set up) have taught out students board/card games including Yahtzee, dominoes, banana-grams, scrabble, rummy, etc. We play them during our earned “free time” and the like. We don’t allow technology as we are working on social skills and IRL behaviors. You can print Yahtzee score cards from the Yahtzee site, make dominoes by printing out, pasting to tagboard (construction paper or card stock, and then laminating . . . cheap and I have multiple sets in different colored backs). We got many of our games from the thrift stores, make new place markers or replacing pieces as necessary (again, print, support and laminate).I also play a game with my 6–8 graders called “Stump the Teacher” They are a team, they ask me questions and I answer. If I can answer in a logical, truthful answer I get a point. If I can’t, they do. The key is that they need to ask questions that I would “reasonably know the answer to.” Anything to do with education, the real world, and things we agree on. I allow sports except soccer because I have never seen a match and thus would reasonably NOT know anything about it. I don’t allow questions like “what’s my grandma’s name” because why in the world would I reasonably know that? It is fun and gets them thinking critically. Lots of riddles. But . . . if my answer makes sense it doesn’t matter if it is what they were looking for. For example, What is red, white and blue? They want the American flag, and I say a fruit pizza. Yep, I win. A fruit pizza can be red white and blue.

Yahtzee: Is it required that all score pads be visible to the other players?

I don't know whether it's required (or prohibited), but I feel that either way doesn't really matter. Optimal Yahtzee strategy depends less on others' score than upon maximizing your own as you wind through the categories based on the outcome of your dice rolls. Allowing players to see each others' scores does expedite games, for what it's worth; (particularly as the game nears conclusion), the quickest mathematicians might forego cautious play (go for Yahtzees vs. taking a number category) if they know they are too far behind for it to be worthwhile. Moreover, some players will be astute enough to sufficiently remember others' scores whether or not they're allowed to see their score cards, so for these two reasons I'm all in favor of full transparency throughout the game.

If only 1 million people could leave the dying Earth to settle elsewhere, how would the world determine which 1 million people get to go?

Now I know what everyone will say. It's obvious. It is THE game of chance. Heck, it's the global recognized arbitrator of chance.Yahtzee.But I just don't think a global Yahtzee tournament will logistically work. Yes, it is great way to duel your sorority sister for a man. It is a perfect game to decide if evolution is real or blasphemy. And no single game can better rule if Lady Gaga or Rhianna is the superior song mistress. But the global logistics are just too much. We'd need hundreds of millions of dice. Billions of score cards. And the pencils required would destroy forests across the globe. And each game could take hours.Nope. Yahtzee just isn't going to cut it. We need to condemn 6.99 billion people to death. This requires real speed and accuracy. This requires…Rock. Paper. Scissor.Anyone can learn. The strategy required is nearly non-existent. 2 out of 3 rules. Each nation gets a number of winners proportionate to their population. We'll have those 1 million winners sorted in about 4 hours. And on to a new world to screw up all over again.
