PDF Editor FAQ

Do you regret moving to India from USA?

Yes, in my current phase of life, I do regret terribly. I have written extensively about my regrets and the reasons in my other answers on Quora.REASONS FOR REGRETI have had first hand experience of Courts, Police, RTO, public transport and municipality, so I am well qualified to answer this question. Anybody who is living in a high end apartment and riding in a chauffer driven car is not well qualified to answer this question. Because then he/she is living in a fool’s paradise. Office to home and back. So his/her definition of India will be very narrow, and the idea of comforts is exaggerated. He/she just represents 30% of India.Right outside his cocoon is 70% of India, which is a massive chaos and filth. Ironically the 30% (400 million) cannot be separated from the 70%(900 million) . They are hand in glove, they live so closely interspersed and interlocked with the 70% that it is impossible to separate the two, and so the exposure is always direct, up-close & raw in nature. There is a huge rub off effect of these 70% over the 30%…and culturally speaking with such homogeneity in the society this enormous low IQ energy exchange negatively influences and permanently damages the social and communication skills of 30%, making them dumb too. The 70% people’s cultural believes dominate the language, laws, food, social taboos and with this enormous khichdi and cultural interchange the 30% high IQ people also end up being mediocre.Which makes India primarily a low income, low quality and high tax regime. (only 4.5% of the population pays taxes on which the 95.5% low quality parasites are being fed). Massive UNFAIRNESS in the system and ZERO recognition or benefits for tax payers. So clearly there are two Indias within this nation. We will talk about this 70% majority firstUncontrolled population of BPL/LIG-A humanitarian crisis of low IQIts so common to see beggars, laborers and blue collar workers with 4 babies hanging around in their lap. Their life is worse than a pig yet they continue to reproduce. With little substance, this Below poverty line/lower income group (BPL/LIG) is gradually becoming the dominant face of India. India is now pretty much defined by this class (70% of India=90 Cr people, 900million). They are all over the place with their cockroach style breeding. This population “blast” of BPL/lower income group has skewed the demographics of this country way out of whack. Despite of all the progress we are making as a nation the expressways, ports, dedicated freight corridors & the bullet trains, the tier1, tier2, tier3 and tier4 cities of India continue to become a chaotic large unplanned mismanaged ugly clusters of slum. You can see them on the sides of railway lines, illegal colonies in cities, in slum clusters, encroachment on footpaths, illegal occupation of public parks, on both sides of metro track, slums on the sides of river or just about anywhere they can lay their hands on. Don’t mistake them to be innocent poor. They are highly criminal minded. Watch this dynamic IAS officer busting such people with illegal encroachment and electricity theft. But we need millions of such officers and first of all we need to sterilize and stop reproduction of this junk criminal class with immediate effect. [1] [2]They are in majority so they can literally find a work around to the rules, they are lawless goons, they can exploit laws and literally do anything in the name of poverty and “being poor”. They are a free class with no control. They escape all violations & punishment by pleading their travails as a poor. They are a huge vote bank too. Most of them are blue collar & labor class. Manual labor carrying bricks, auto rick drivers, road side vendors & hawkers, milk man, car washers, porters, tire puncture repair, farm labor, construction labor, clerks, salesmen, chaprasi and janitors etc. All of that work could be done by machines or by opening large superstores. These are EXTRA people who were not needed. They are also raw and uncivilized. With a little bit of inciting & rumor mongering they can come on streets in huge numbers, they can convert to a violent criminal, petty thief, drug peddler, chain snatcher or a rapist depending on the situation. Most of them are unemployed goons & mafia or related to politics. They also mob lynch and commit other horrendous crimes. This class is a humongous burden on this nation. Government of India is squeezed to the hilt maintaining this semi-illiterate, unemployed, low IQ and unskilled population. We as a nation pay around INR 1 lac crore (10 billion) in direct benefit transfer every year under various schemes to these people. All that money comes out of taxes paid by the 4.5% honest tax payers. 1000s of bogus welfare schemes like MNREGA, mid-day meal, free scholarships had to be designed to carry the burden of this population. They are parasites. In return, they are not giving anything worthwhile to the nation. They are not producing any Steve Jobs nor do they bring any Nobel prize or do any cutting edge research. Half of them are mentally stunted and malnourished. Other half are unemployed goons & criminals. All they do is earn their daily bread. Eat, reproduce and excrete. What a burden! in terms of resources. For their useless life they consume hell lot of resources with immense pollution - land, trees, water, plastic, food, milk, paper, cloth, leather, coal, electricity etc. We cannot even showcase them as any kind of talent to the world. This is a monumental failure of this nation. It hurts to see that I get nothing for my taxes. Only 70% get stuff for free. NO free medical insurance for me, NO low cost medicines, NO scholarships, no free pension for me, I don’t get INR 3000 per month like the farmers got, NO subsidized electricity and water, I get NO reservation in education and jobs. I don’t get any unemployment benefits. I just get NOTHING for my taxes except filth, pollution, urban slums, sewer and garbage and failed administration. It’s like robbing a few honest & law abiding citizens to pay the lawless, dishonest ones by distributing free rations, free electricity, free water etc. 70% NOT following any law. 4.5% tax payers are squeezed to the hilt, obeying laws, paying taxes and living scared of the 70% goons…makes it a grossly unfair third world lawless society. Some influential group of people keep selling the “fantasy” idea of garbage bags and segregation, cleanliness etc.. These are great ideas but only for the 30% because in the nearby slum and village nobody is following the garbage segregation rules or any other law. And nobody in India has the spine to enforce any laws on the 70% illegal slum dwellers and villagers. Police is scared to go there. They are in majority and a vote bank so they escape all laws.In advanced nations like UK and Canada, regardless of who you are, you get free medical care and kids education etc. There is no differentiation between income groups when it comes to laws and benefits. In USA, I was so proud to pay taxes, even if I was not entitled to pension/social security I never mind paying taxes because I was getting so much in return neatly landscaped roads, clean air, clean water, excellent justice system, monuments, parks, top notch venues of education, no pollution (air, water or noise), no overpopulation, no mosquitoes, flies or stray animals, excellent garbage management and no visible sewage and heavy use of technology, robotics, electronics and machines, excellent infrastructure and outstanding government functionary with Harvard/Yale educated mayors and politicians. Our founding fathers being educated in Britain knew that the secret of a nation’s success is educated high quality people & low population. Yet they were so “weak” they could not implement strong laws like death penalty for reproduction to save this nation. Allowing the uncontrollable birth of this 70% useless crowd was a monumental failure of this nation.America has only got 300 million (30 cr) people and they vast tracts of land and natural resources. Almost all of them are high school (12th pass) . And America’s high school education is much better than India’s B.Sc. or M.Sc. Almost every body knows how to speak English and communicate well (except a few immigrants) so a high school graduate can get a part time job easily anywhere in the country.ITS A HUMANITARIAN CRISIS. The most urgent thing to do is to curtail the reproduction rights of lower income groups who cannot sustain themselves. And I don’t see any hope that any such law will be made and we will continue to slip on Human Development Index. Although its too late now, this control should have been done in 1950s.Its a shame that our nation with all its past glory & rich cultural heritage has now degraded to such an extent due to uncontrolled overpopulation that we have merely become a reflection of large cluster of these poverty stricken low income groups devoid of any specific talent or substance.National Capital Region of New Delhi, Gurgaon. Village clusters which were supposed to be entirely removed in order to properly develop world class towns continue to co-exist seamlessly mingling with high rise & sectors, hence suffocation, crime & lawlessness also mingles. They have to bear the hooliganism, noise, DJ music, filthy streets, crime & dog barks from the Villages/slums nearby & they also run the risk of rubbing the wrong side of the miscreants. In China they would have removed the entire village cluster by an executive order. That’s how they have developed so fast by building world class cities.AdministrationOne of the big reason of my regret stems from the fact that for initial 5 years I lived in a high end apartment and a chauffer driven car. I kept hallucinating that India will be like Singapore in terms of laws, implementation and cleanliness. But oh boy, was I deceiving myself all this while by consuming idiotic news which keeps misleading people how India is becoming a superpower by showing quarterly results of top 20 companies & their growth and success story. Growth of Infosys, TCS, L&T, HUL, RIL (or a well funded startup) with wealth locked in their accounts doesn’t mean a country has become developed. The private economy has grown leaps and bounds but the government functionary (RTO, courts, police, post offices, EPF offices and municipality) has remained the same as it was 40 years ago. Phone numbers and emails will not work. Digital India web sites will crash. Zero accountability of anything. Zero customer service. Same filthy offices full of low grade corrupt people as in the 80s. Offices running in dingy, dirty and dilapidated buildings, overflowing toilets.Civic sense in India has rapidly deteriorated in last 30 years due to overpopulation, every thing appears corrupted, highly encroached, suffocated and a low class ugly patch work. What I repent is that it took me a decade of living in India to realize what a misery and curse living in this country could be.Initially I thought these are minor things, but over time lack of complete control by municipality, police and courts have bothered me a lot.[3]What has also perturbed me is the massive degradation of urban living standard. A seamless mix khichdi of extremely underdeveloped urban slums & villages with high rises and concrete jungles. Its all unplanned and ugly. Villagers and slum dwellers keep infiltrating and trespassing everywhere to encroach roads and lands. There is no unanimity or symmetry in town planning or architecture. And what is even more shocking is that we already have a benchmark in town planning, a city called “Chandigarh” designed by French architect Le Corbusier, yet we could not make copies of it all over India, which proves how dumb we are as a nation. We don’t have the gray matter (or will) to even copy. [4]A nation cannot achieve success by merely proclaiming “digital India” growth. The overburdened and overcrowded courts treat humans as cockroaches, a court case usually runs for 5–10 years, the filthy overflowing toilets of bus terminals, railway stations and public places don’t get resolved by going digital.GDP growth means nothing when you are among the lowest & slipping on Human Development index at 131. [5]People, Culture and tribal mindsetOvertime I have realized these are deep rooted cultural issues related to mentality of people which cannot change even in 100 years. Densely social societies continue to carry forward their irrational superstitious customs & rituals from the tribal era. Be it the lust for a male child or figuring out auspicious & inauspicious days for every thing, astrology and age old believes which have absolutely no meaning. These “superstitions” are grossly inherent in Hinduism and Islam which are completely out of synch of modern realities.May be only an authoritarian leader can change that.. Its a shame that Arabic countries and even Thailand are much much ahead of India in terms of cleanliness, population control and administration.Public/society here is so neutral, tolerant and subservient that they don’t protest against “things that matter” nor do they take cudgels in their own hand to improve their neighborhood conditions. They are all hand in glove with each other. They don’t blow whistle on wrong doings like foot path encroachment by a neighbor. No vigilantism. They don’t come together and protest against power cuts, malfunctioning of courts, local goons & crime, animal menace on streets, encroachment of public property by vendors and hawkers, low class work of municipality, absent teachers in schools, absent doctors in primary health care, air pollution, sewage or garbage & a general lack of public control. The country is becoming a large chaotic slum. Yet the public gives full obeisance and adoration to their local administrators without holding them accountable.[6]Public will come out only for foolish and flimsy reasons - Hooliganism in the name of religious festivities, Hindu Muslim riots, higher caste lower caste riots, seeking reservation in government jobs and blocking roads for opposing all progress. This nation is for the low IQ 70% and not the 30%. The electoral is also largely formed by them and for them. All the elected officials are also reflective of the 70%.I have realized lately that I don’t want to live among the 90 crore (900 million) low IQ people, there is nothing to learn from them. Even some officer/ruling class people also lack common sense & critical reasoning, they think themselves to be wise & advanced but they are extremely narrow minded & attached to their customs/rituals dictated by their respective backward religions (usually 5000BC tenets and rules and rituals based on mythology) which eventually makes them very tribal and irrational.I want to live in a society /culture that requires dispassionate reason, objective justice, loyalty, honor, stoicism, thrift, honesty, hard work, liberty, individuality and a desire to rise above oneself. To live among such Intellectually genius people, brilliant law makers, Nobel prize winners. People who do cutting edge research, people who are crazy enough to innovate, and set up brilliant institutions & laws, who contribute to make the country safe, clean, healthy, prosperous and progressive. Strong police and Strong judiciary. And America was that country.A black swan-Time when immigration was easierBlack Swans are extremely rare and improbable events.I was fortunate to be in the US at the time when getting a green card was easier, I worked in the Cupertino office of Apple, the 10 year stock market boom was just starting. Its sad that I overlooked this MASSIVE black swan which walked past me. I failed to capture it and pick it in my arms. Now going back to USA is so difficult looking at the immigration scene there, green card queue time is 190 years for Indians now its just a dream. This is one moment I feel a Nepali or a Sri Lankan would have a better chance at GC due to lower population of their country.EnvyI feel envious of my friends who could foresee this humanitarian crisis and also were smart enough to strike the iron when it was hot and stayed back in the US and they have enjoyed excellent quality of life in lieu of their taxes, regardless of what financial situation they are in (most have done very good though and worst part is they don’t want to return & they don’t come on “Quora” repenting about their decision).By the way, I have exited out of social media groups & muted my US friends. I could not bear to see my friends posting their brand new Tesla, their second home and large SUVs, Hawai & Europe trips. It hurts specially when all you see here is overpopulation crisis and low salary income in India.Moving towards “Good Quality of life” (well being, well functioning law & order, clean air, clean water, no dust, no pollution & government to public interfaces) is the single biggest purpose of existence of humanity. Every human on planet is essentially trying to do that. To improve his life.In that quest of improvement of life, I feel like I only had one fabulous chance which I blew up by returning from USA prematurely just when I started to internalize and assimilate fully in American culture.MY RETURN FROM USA TO INDIAI have reflected and pondered on why I took that foolish and abrupt decision of packing my bags and donating all my stuff to thrift stores in the US and coming back to India (what a fateful day). There were some assumptions and myths I built in my head. And I caution the NRI readers not to build such myths in their head. Read about the myths here. [7]My return was partially driven by misrepresentation in media about India being a fast growing economy ( therefore its going to be a developed superpower) and partially on the ground of being closer to family/loneliness etc. And when I returned to India, I again got a couple of chances to go back to the US, but I never took that opportunity because till then I was living in my cocoon of a “so called fast growing economy” living closer to family, with street food and a chauffer driven car, I had not seen these layers of crisis which have uncovered fully now and I can clearly see what’s going on.Initial 5–6 years I could only see the stock market & Indian companies growth on TV, I never saw the country from the angle of these 90 cr (900 million) fast growing LIG population (no real substance). And the massive competition in life that happens due to them. With so many people & competition & organization politics & jostling for power, its always a dirty struggle. You have to be brutal and cut throat to succeed. And so every body is poor due to competition. They are omnipresent. Even in our political and official institutes there is a reflection of the same class & tribe. There is no brilliance, critical thinking or high moral values. They are just doing a 9 to 5 job. No work ethic. Its just the herd.I so wish I had a mentor in the USA or in India who motivated me and explained me that a country is all about strong laws, strong judiciary, strong police, strong municipality, birth control and administration and not so much about GDP, startups and economy. I wish there was someone who showed me this slowly changing dimension & the contrast effect of these 90 cr. (900 million) people. The growth of India’s GDP is merely an illusion when you see it from the lens of this crowd. There was no social media, no Facebook, no Quora or Whatsapp when I took that abrupt decision to return. I wish somebody counselled me just like I am counselling you now.The above answer was written in August 2020, adding more content below as on 22/3/2021IS IT THE END OF THE ROAD FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME ?Worse come, if I have to stay back in this country then I must have something to fall back on to. If I somehow manage to tolerate the above enormous issues of this society cursed with overpopulation (and if I somehow isolate myself from it), I must see some positives too. Else psychologically it will be a nightmare to survive here. The 70% are a reality. They are here to stay.I looked at the Aadhar data. There are around 600 million people in North India, 250 million in south, 250 million in east and 200 million in west. So first and foremost, one can always plan to move to cities with lesser population density & better municipalities Pune, Indore, Surat, Hyderabad, Kochi and Trivandrum, Good Employment opportunity, Higher Literacy rate, lower pollution, better culture, excellent infra, cleanliness, lesser poverty and slums. The China-USA trade wars and boycott of China post pandemic has come as a boon for India, government is building ultra modern expressways all over the country and connecting them with all the major ports under Bharatmala and Sagarmala projects. Now I am not sure whether it is just another media propoganda or things happening for real.Again do the 70% backward people of this country really know how to use it? People drive two wheelers on newly built expressways, they go wrong side, encroach the roads for selling stuff like pan masala or helmets or cross expressways illegally. Who will stop these 70%?. There goes all your development down the drain. At the economic level government appears to be doing a lot. They are making India the largest mobile manufacturing and exporting hub of the country. Same for the pharma and chemical companies.Delhi Mumbai Industrial corridor, Mumbai Nagpur Expressway, Kolkata Mumbai, Delhi Meerut, Delhi Dehradun, Haridwar- Allahabad Ganga expressway, Bundelkhand expressway, Bangalore Chennai expressway. This will allow people to drive to their home towns every weekend in 2–3 hours as opposed to 7-8 hours[8]The GOI is also building a network of separate dedicated “Freight corridor”.. It is going to be the massive game changer for Indian economy. Because the freight will now move on dedicated electrified tracks from ports to major cities of India without any hindrance. This will reduce the cost of transportation. Imagine a farmer in UP can send his produce to any port of his choice and export his produce to SAARC or Middle east nations and triple his income.[9][10]Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, 1,468 km from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai.Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, 1,760 km from Ludhiana, Punjab to Dankuni in West Bengal.India is going to become the third largest start up eco system of the world. We are already the leader in the Fintech space. Our Aadhar based Direct subsidy payment program and vaccine building capacity is the largest in the world. This start up “big bang” is going to be a bonanza for unemployed engineers and technicians and allied services.Modernization of railway stations to build integrated railway, metro and bus terminus is already underway.Bullet train for Mumbai-Ahmedabad work underway. Delhi Varanasi track will be ready by 2030.There are also discussions of Hyper loop. Following is the diamond quadrilateral of Bullet trains in India.India is fast transforming to electric charging and solar infrastructure. Tata Motors and Mahindra are already committing to this huge transformation. India is very proactive and they have formed Khanij Bidesh India Limited ( KABIL). Under which have secured future Lithium purchase agreements with Lithium triangle countries (Chile, Bolivia and Argentina) and Indonesia.[11]New International airports are coming up. Jewar and New Mumbai airport being the largest ones. The same 70% labor pool gives the rest of 30% a chance to employ full time residential maids, nurses , drivers, milk deliveries and nannies dirt cheap. Most upper income group families have 3–4 staff at an average (from nearby villages).Select a secluded spot where there is no noise pollution and lot of greenery and build a palatial house in tier 3 town near a tier 2 city and build luxuries around you and on weekend live like a Maharaja (or like the British). A gardener who grows fresh vegetables and fruits in the back yard and plucks it for you, a cook who prepares fresh food thrice a day. A nanny who takes care of kids, a runner who does all the market stuff, a chauffer takes you out while you can read a newspaper in the car.Whenever I feel down I watch this video of Bill Gates love for India, with all its worst and ugly problems, Bill Gates is always gung ho on India. This is so motivational that an American Billionaire is visiting Indian slums and sitting with people in remote UP village slum. This is incredible. What a messiah Bill Gates is. He has saved millions of lives and donated $28 billion dollar for Global Health Care. Its a nice feeling, at least there is someone in America who cares for this neglected country and its people otherwise the politicians, rich and wealthy NRIs don’t really care & have almost forgotten and lost hope on us completely. Wish Jeff Bezos, Buffett, Elon Musk, Zuckerberg also come and live with us here for some time. It will be a feel good factor. “Kuch din to guzaro …. [12]DRAWBACKS OF USA- CROSS ARGUMENTSAmericans mostly eat packed, canned and fast food. Heavy consumerism. Soda pop ( Coke/Pepsi ) served everywhere and they are addicted to it. How can someone feel healthy drinking coke and sugary drinks and juices. There is tons of stuff which is tempting but unhealthy and sugar quoted like Crispy Cream Donuts, Twinkies, pop tarts, pizzas, burgers, donuts, cookies etc.Every thing appears artificial. Artificial large bananas, shiny oranges and waxed apple. Same for the vegetables. Genetically modified food. Silicon gels makes the women appear so artificial. (Please note artificial does not mean “fake” or “dishonesty” because even if its artificial its upfront and clear, nobody is hiding anything).India is catching up with consumerism too. But still largely the food here is freshly prepared thrice a day at home or office with real herbs like ginger, turmeric etc. Let’s not underestimate the importance of availability of maid and cooks and freshly made healthy food. Vegetarianism is a boon in India.Americans have to work all their life to maintain health insurance/car insurance after retiring. And to work they have to be healthy and for staying healthy they have to cook themselves every morning all their life. If by any chance they get a disease which is not covered by the Insurance.. they are screwed. Because the 5 day stay at hospital is usually upwards of $50000 (only an insurance can pay it). In India, hospital costs are rising but they are not unaffordable, people usually pay in cash. Quality Health care is cheaper as compared to other countries and insurance is a newer concept relatively. After retirement people have to compromise to live in a senior living set up. In India retired people have a lot of respect as senior citizens, even though there is no welfare like medicare, medicaid but the social network roots are strong. Long term and geriatric care for old and fragile are easily available as there is plenty of labor who work as nurses, sometimes they do it for free as a mark for respect for elderly. That is the level of status for elderly in India.Identity crisis is a big big issue. Desis in America are neither fully Indians nor Americans. Living in America they continue with their desi habits. Festivals, food, music and Bollywood. What’s the point ? If you are in America and wearing a lungi or a saree . Its as bad as being in Bangalore or Hyderabad. When in Rome be like romans. One should try to assimilate as much as possible. Try mixing with the mainstream Americans. Do what they are doing . Listen to the pop/rock/jazz/blues/classical. Understand it. Develop a taste for it. watch their movies. Go to church. Be open to learn. This is always a dilemma for desis and they always remain desis in America and live in ghetto type of structure & usually ignored by mainstream Americans. Although there is no real racism against Indians because Indians are not into petty crimes. They are well respected and highly educated.Loneliness is a real thing. After earning a lot of money and materials and peak of professional success with robotic life. And after visiting all the scenic places and monuments in America. There is a strange kind of hollowness, boredom and emptiness. That hollowness silently kills. In fact, due to this emptiness only there are so many mental hollowed out crazy people in America who go out on a killing spree from time to time in a mall, club, school or a spa.Desis deciding to settle there have to compromise with the thought that their umbilical cord with the mother (country) is going to be snipped and they will forever leave behind their loved ones with whom they have great emotional bonds and love. Their family and friends. This is a horrible horrible feeling. Just like in the movie Titanic, Jack is drowning and bidding good bye to Rose. See you in the next birth!Footnotes[1] https://youtu.be/2cMwBQ6iVsc[2] https://youtu.be/2bmULHehWgI[3] Charlie Buffett's answer to Do courtrooms actually look like the ones shown in movies?[4] Charlie Buffett's answer to How is life in India after returning from the USA?[5] India slips two spot to rank 131 in UN’s human development index[6] Charlie Buffett's answer to What is it that we as Indians are collectively doing wrong?[7] https://www.quora.com/Do-Indians-living-in-America-want-to-go-back-to-India/answer/Tin-Tin-925?[8] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDSsFm_eWJQ[9] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlCgA3m-jg4[10] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6dSYqH8cRo[11] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5BZt-1jYfI[12] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EP0QedR6Jc
