How do you think your government has responded to the coronavirus?

I live in the California Bay Area. And within the United States, it is in my view one of the best places to be.Bay Area’s Response: 10 out of 10.California’s Response: 10 out of 10.Fed’s response: 0But hey, could be worse, could have been negative; at least they stayed out of the way. Not all states have been this lucky.I’m sure opinions differ. But that’s mine and it has been my experience. I’ll explain with a more or less full timeline:To sum up a comment on the Federal Response: There has been none. It’s a sh— show over there. I sometimes complain about how they love to discard us and ignore the contributions of the West Coast over “back East” (hate that term, by the way) and keep us out of their planning, but right now, that’s fine by me. I am sad for the rest of my country, but I’m at least I’m mostly a spectator.“I don’t take responsibility at all” - Donald J Trump. March 13, 2020.In California, we had our first case January 25 (Riverside, near L.A.), and the first Bay Area case in Jan 31st.We were all talking about the virus and watching things unfold in February. Santa Clara declared state of emergency on Feb 3rd.We continued to watch it unfold in horror and dealing with it locally via county state of emergencies through February. Tracking cases. Finding our first locally contracted case. Being careful, taking initial measures. Learning about this threat and comparing notes.By March 7th., San Francisco banned large gatherings. On March 9th, Trump said it was like the flu and “nothing is shut down”. We didn’t listen - Disneyland and California sport venues closed March 12th (there’s some concert tickets I have that weren’t refunded which, if we ever have concerts, I’ll need to look into because they pushed it to November - maybe… most of us have a similar story).Locally, as I talked to my friends, the pattern was that entire office buildings and schools closed and sent everyone in that building/school home on quarantine as soon as a single case happened at that location (even if in the morning - the school would close and “come pick up your kids then”). We kept a tight leash on it in the Bay Area that way through late February and early March. My kid went to school last March 13th, Friday (same day as the Trump “responsibility” quote). We were sort of expecting that at any time as the state had already signaled its intention of closing schools very soon. That day they closed all schools after 3pm - the next school over had a confirmed case that morning and they sent everyone home in the morning, and our school cut about an hour early. A teacher told me that a few staff had already not shown up and only a bit over 60% of the kids were there because parent’s didn’t bring them in (I actually discussed having my kid skip school but decided against it) and were all just talking Covid and going through how distance learning may work so there wasn’t a lot of learning on the school program that day anyway. We started shelter at home that day personally - it’s the same area, these kids all know each other, and there was no way of knowing if contact had or hadn’t happened. We turned out to be fine. All 7 Bay Area counties - a total of 7.6 million people - declared “shelter in place” the next Monday, March 16.The state followed on the 19th with a statewide order. We have been shelter-in-place since.Ah, and on April 13th, CA made a pact with Oregon and Washington to coordinate health decisions regarding Covid-19. So the whole West can protect in a similar way. That same day, Trump’s main worry was that his name go on every stimulus check, and - of course - blamed the Obama administration.Colorado and Nevada joined the Western States pact April 17th, the same day Trump was tweeting his weird “liberate XXX state” drivel.Throughout this entire ordeal, CA Governor Gavin Newsom has been reporting daily, but his report quickly gives way to Dr. Sonia Angell, who has been nothing short of fantastic in explaining the science and the “why” of each and every one of California’s moves and decisions. This became a familiar image. During shelter in place, they each had their own space. And this, too. With illustrations. A plan. Reasons. Preparation. Professionalism. Thanks to clear messaging, planning and professionalism, we all know before we open, we have a list of “preconditions” to open without dates (when do you open? when all the preconditions are met). And we are including immigrants and homeless people, with line items and help specific for them as well.So County by county, in California, if a set of conditions are complied with, we will open (other Western states, because of the pledge, have very similar conditions). These are:No more than one new case per 10K residents in 14 daysNo deaths in 14 daysEssential workers have access to PPEA minimum of 1.5 test per 100K residents conducted dailyAbility to temporarily house 15% of the homelessHospitals are equipped to handle a max 35% surge.Nursing facilities have 2 week supply of PPEWillingness to continue to monitor metrics and potentially re-enact restriction. These are minimum. Other counties have other restrictions. Each local newspaper (and of course, your city and county websites) shows the status of their counties. As of this writing, 17 counties got the go-ahead to reopen “more quickly”. There are new standards for restaurants and offices. Things are clear and you can read it in the paper. Some counties refuse to open, citing lack of ability to do the above, and California is assisting them. There has been essentially zero of the bickering in Washington. It’s like a different country, and makes me glad to pay the high California taxes which until earlier this year so many Quorans made fun of. Our “Big California government” took care of things, widely informed the population, will keep monitoring, and may open and close specific things. But our population is ready and willing, as the “Western States Pact” says, to “flip the script on COVID-19”.And this is important. California has 39.51 million people. Oregon 4.2, Washington 7.6, Colorado 5.7. Nevada 3 million. That’s 60 million people coordinating a response. In the meantime, I watched with dismay the U.S. congressional conference as a congressman asked a task force coordinator for Opening Guidance (sorry I have no names, again, we’re oversaturated with information for our state at the moment). The coordinator said he sent the recommendations to the CDC, and the CDC has not “approved” them, so he couldn’t tell him. The congressman asked “so what do I tell my people? We’re supposed to open next week”. There was a back-and-forth. Essentially the Doctor saying, in different words “go ask the CDC for the document I prepared, because I can’t actually give it to you”. Tragic waste of time. Those documents, I thought, should all just be open and edited as they go so they can start planning as early as possible. We have computers and the internet, for crying out loud! Free software does word documents, tracks changes and keeps versions while keeping it on the internet! There was no reason for that public display while citizens are dying. The only reasonable response would have been “I’ll email Congress a public link as soon as we’re done here, sir, keep in mind there may be changes by the CDC soon so recheck often for them”. But maybe that’s “too Silicon Valley” or something. And today, the Supreme Court in Wisconsin ended the extension of the state’s own shelter in place order. None of the grounds the court (judges, not M.D.s) gave were medical. And the commander-in-chief, Mr. “I don’t take responsibility at all”, “blame China”, the man that fights with every single Democrat governor, has at least stayed mostly out of the way: April 25 - “Gavin Newsom was very nice today," he said in his own Thursday briefing. "They've done very well in California”.Glad you noticed, Mr. President. How’s it going over there? And most importantly, why?And nobody can claim “victory” yet, but we Californians are in this for the long haul. We’ll reopen, slowly and carefully, and, most of all, well prepared and almost all pulling in the same direction. And I feel great about Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Colorado, at least. And for everyone else’s sake, I really do hope they stop bickering in Washington. As I said the other day here, politically it’s all fun and games but when the dumb stuff you say starts having a body count, maybe it’s time to stop?Stay safe, everyone.
