According to Florian Cajori's History of Mathematical Notations, volume 2, page 61, a capital sigma for sums was first used by Leonhard Euler (1707—1783) in 1755, but didn't catch on until the 1800s. Here's Cajori's paragraph on [math]\displaystyle\sum[/math] and the footnotes to it:Footnotes:Before Euler used [math]\displaystyle\sum[/math] for sums, other mathematicians since Leibniz had used a capital S, usually the long S form that we still use for integrals. Leibniz used [math]\displaystyle\int[/math] for both integrals and other sums. For him, they really weren't different things.

What’s the record for most people sent to orbit on a single launch?The US shuttle holds the current record by a long distance. Capsules have never sent more than 3 people into orbit, so any shuttle launch with 4 or more is a record holder for crew and passengers. The normal shuttle limit is 7 crew and passengers, but at least one shuttle was configured for 8 seats.[Edit] Thanks to Dave Andrews in the comments, I finally have the shuttle mission with the record: STS-61-A by the Challenger. “STS-61-A holds the current record for the largest crew - eight people - aboard any single spacecraft for the entire period from launch to landing.”(Seat 8 was located on the mid-deck directly ahead of seat 5 in these two diagrams.)(The Challenger carried the Spacelab module, which gave the big crew some room to move.)The Apollo Skylab Rescue capsule could hold 5 crew and passengers, though it never flew. The upcoming Orion capsule can have up to 6 and the CST-100 Starliner and Dragon 2 can hold 7.CST-100 Starliner:Incidentally, the most people in space at one time was 13, which has occurred several times on Mir and the International Space Station. (Story: Population in Space at Historic High: 13.) This occurred when a shuttle brought 7 people to a space station that already had 6 people aboard.
