Not really an “incident”, but here ‘tis:I was flying home to San Diego from Louisville, Kentucky. It was only a weekend trip, so I only had a carry-on with me.The flight was overbooked and the gate agent got on the public address system and asked for volunteers to be re-booked onto a later flight. They offered not only the re-booked flight but also a $500 travel voucher which, back then, would get you just about anywhere in the continental United States you’d want to go. You're making two errors here:Assuming the teachers volunteering to teach the migrant kids in-person are the same teachers who have opposed teaching San Diego kids in-person.Assuming the circumstances of teaching the migrant kids are exactly the same as the circumstances of teaching San Diego kids.To elaborate:Teachers have not been unanimous in opposing a return to in-person instruction. Some teachers have been ready to go back for months. Hell, some teachers never wanted to go virtual in the first place. I'm guessing you think teachers were unanimous because the teacher's union, which represents the teachers, has consistently opposed teaching in-person. But unions do not run on unanimous consensus. They just need a majority. You should not assume that every single member of a union agrees with the union's stance. So the first possible explanation here is that the teachers volunteering to teach the migrant kids in-person would also be happy to teach San Diego kids in-person — they've just been prevented from teaching San Diego kids in person because they're outvoted in the union.The circumstances under which the migrant kids will be taught are not the same as the circumstances under which San Diego kids get taught. The migrant kids are in the San Diego Convention Center, a huge facility with modern HVAC, where the kids don't move about the community at large and are subject to a bunch of COVID protocols like social distancing and masking and stuff. Whereas ordinary classrooms might be small and poorly ventilated, and of course the kids in those classrooms are having non-distanced, non-masked interactions with the wider community. Not to mention that we're talking about a brief volunteer opportunity versus a return to day-in, day-out teaching. So another possible explanation is that the teachers volunteering to teach the migrant kids in-person feel comfortable with those logistics and that level of risk, buy feel uncomfortable with the logistics and level of risk involved in teaching San Diego kids in-person.Note that San Diego Unified has already struck a deal to resume in-person teaching in a couple weeks.So basically, you've chosen the least likely explanation — that teachers think migrant kids are “more worthy and noble” — instead of considering the much more likely explanations — that the teachers volunteering would also be happy to return to their normal classrooms, or that teachers are assessing the risk differently because the risk is different.

They are a couple of islands far away so not something we’re going to lose sleep over it.There were some fanatics and nationalists who couldn’t accept it, but also many of the conscripts felt relief as war ended, no more hunger, cold and suffering. Keep in mind that they were most 18 year old conscripts under equipped, with no military training and who were not volunteers. Many of them, not knowing what they were fighting for, who came from poor subtropical areas from the north and got trench foot.The negative side of all this: many lives were lost, the positive: the military junta ended, democracy came back and most generals were sentenced for crimes against humanity.
