Good question.The standard answer, of course, is however long it takes you to get a degree in Construction Management. But, there is another way, that I can attest to because I have done it. This is how it works, by the numbers: (1) one way or the other, get that job. “Project manager”, not superintendent, or any other title. It makes no difference in this point in your career how good or bad the company is, just get that job. You’ll get a better one a little further down the line.(2) Identify the major skills you will need to be competent in. Not a seasoned pro, just competent. Figure on budgeting, locating and contracting with subcontractors and supplies, critical path scheduling, and arranging site utilities. These are the critical components. Lien waivers, change orders, bank draws, all these are coming, but for the moment, concentrate on these four skills.(3) Get on top of these as hard as you can. None of this is rocket science, and most of it is common sense.Want to know what the budget is? Go on line and get the books showing the costs of different kinds of buildings. Now you’re armed with a fairly accurate idea, probably just as accurate as the CEO’s figures. Doesn't have to be all inclusive at this point, as your subcontractor and supplier figures aren't in yet.Locating subs and suppliers? The material houses, lumber yards, etc. all have lists of their favorite customers. Get the project in the newspaper. Don’t be shy.Contracts: Get them off the internet, or buy AIA forms. get very familiar with them.Critical path scheduling? Do your own, teach yourself how from books on the subject. I mean books on the original models, not books on how to use the current software. Best tool you will ever have, and makes you look like a total pro.Site utilities: your utility companies and subs are going to save you here. They have engineers, and design their own work. Again, don’t be shy here, ask for help, but only in specific areas, one problem at a time.(4) Bottom line, bust your ass to make this first project a success, and you will have attained the status you were looking for, “some degree of excellence”.Good luck and have fun.Best,Alexi
