PDF Editor FAQ

How can I get an ID? I'm 17, and have zero documentation. I was homeschooled, born at home, and have never visited a doctor or dentist. The only birth record my family has is an entry in a calendar. I live in IL

First of all, my condolences to anyone in a situation like this. The first thing you should probably do is consider whether at least one of your parents would be willing to help you get an ID and otherwise integrate with mainstream society. If your parents prevented you from getting a birth certificate, kept you out of school and never took you to a doctor or dentist, I wouldn’t count on their cooperation with this. But if at least one of them has suddenly realized how difficult your life will be without documentation of your identity, maybe you can get help from that parent.Without parental cooperation, you’ll almost certainly need help from an adult who has known you for a long time, ideally since you were born. Is there a neighbor who could help? What about aunts and uncles?Without your parents’ cooperation, you probably can’t get the ID until you turn 18, but you’d be wise to start making plans sooner, since this won’t be easy to do.The U.S. Department of State allows for a “birth affidavit” to be used in a passport application as proof of place of birth when no record exists: https://eforms.state.gov/Forms/ds10.pdfThat affidavit could be filled out by an aunt or uncle.I’m not sure about the state of Illinois’ requirements. They probably do have some means of providing a state ID card, but it won’t be easy. Your local police department might be able to help with this.I would suggest you contact the Job Corps as well. This is a partnership between employers, labor unions and the U.S. government that takes in young people, gives them a place to live, schooling and medical care and teaches them skilled trades. If you go to them and cooperate with the program, in the short term you’ll get housing, food and medical care; in the long term you’ll have a high school diploma plus job skills that will allow you to earn a comfortable income. I’m confident that they can sort out the issues of getting ID. You’d doubtlessly need your parents to sign off on joining the Job Corps now, but that won’t matter once you turn 18.Thanks for asking me to answer and best of luck with this.

Why did the University of Illinois system decide to house its excellent computer science program in Urbana-Champaign instead of Chicago?

UIUC has a long history of Computer Science work, well before people worried about getting VC for their start-ups while in school. See UIUC CS history here: Department of Computer Science at IllinoisCompare that to UIC:We are a department both old and new. The University of Illinois at Chicago was founded in 1965, and as Computer Science grew as a field, Computer Science faculty were housed in the Department of Information Engineering, which in 1982 became the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In July 2001, Computer Science became a department in its own right. Also, UIUC is the flagship school in the UofI system, and the best ranked of the three in many areas. This builds momentum as it draws highly regarded professors, who in turn do groundbreaking research, which attracts more outstanding faculty...Finally, although Urbana/Champaign is not as VC focused as Boston or the valley, there is still plenty of interest in projects that come out of the university, and the university works to encourage that. The city also features a large technology and software industry mostly focusing on research and development of new technologies. The Research Park, located in southern Champaign and backed by the University of Illinois, is home to many companies including Riverbed Technology, iCyt (a biotechnology company), Citrix Systems, the Illinois Natural History Survey, the Illinois State Geological Survey, the Illinois State Water Survey, Yahoo!, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Science Applications International Corporation, State Farm Research Center,[16] Riverglass Inc. and Tekion (a fuel cell company). Numerous other software and technology companies also have offices in Champaign including AMD, Intel, IBM, Amdocs, Infobright, Instarecon, Phonak, Power World, Caterpillar Simulation Center, and Volition, Inc.. The largest high technology employer is Wolfram Research, with more than 400 employees in Champaign.[17] The United States Army Corps of Engineers maintains the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in Champaign.- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champaign,_Illinois#EconomyThe Research Park at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the most visible result of a significant shift in the history of the University of Illinois: the incorporation of economic development and innovation into its core mission.- http://researchpark.illinois.edu/about/historySee also: Office of Technology Management, Urbana-Champaign

Is UIUC a hard school to get into?

Computer Science is the single most competitive major at Illinois, and Illinois has one of the most competitive CS departments in the country.I don’t know the statistics for external transfer admissions, but the department received about 4500 applications for Fall 2017 freshman admission to the Engineering CS major, for an entering class of about 200. [Update May 2020: For Fall 2020 admission, we received over 6000 applications for a target entering class of about 250.]Maybe a better statistic is our actual acceptance rate, since not everyone we accept actually comes to Illinois. According to this Quora post, the acceptance rate for Fall 2017 freshman applications in CS was about 18%, compared with 35% across the College of Engineering and 60% campus-wide.I don’t have similar stats for transfer admissions, but we do admit about 100 external transfer students every year. All of them meet the minimum 3.8 GPA requirement (pdf), but meeting this requirement does not guarantee admission. (Only 2/3 of the on-campus transfer applicants—what other universities call “declaring your major”—who satisfied the stringent minimum requirements were admitted last fall.)Talk to your academic advisors ASAP.Take the required prerequisite classes seriously. Do your absolute best.If your community college is part of the Engineering Pathway program at Illinois, start polishing your application now. Most application deadlines are in the spring. Even if you’re too far along to start as a new Pathway student, start following the Pathway curriculum. Do your absolute best. Most importantly, do not apply only to the Illinois Engineering CS program. No matter how strong your grades and ACT scores and personal statement are, there is nothing you can do to guarantee admission to any particular program. It’s best to think of the admission process as random; you can influence the odds, but you cannot guarantee a win.Everything I’ve said so far applies to the CS major offered through the College of Engineering, but there are many other options at Illinois.A third of Illinois CS majors are admitted through Liberal Arts and Sciences, into one of six degree programs: Mathematics&CS, Statistics&CS, CS+Anthropology, CS+Astronomy, CS+Chemistry, and CS+Linguistics. These share the same core curriculum as the Engineering CS major, and LAS CS majors have access to all the same resources—the same classes with the same professors (hi), same career fairs, same labs—but admissions requirements to the LAS programs are slightly easier. [Update May 2020: In Fall 2019, less than half of first-year CS majors were admitted through Engineering; the selection of CS+X majors has grown from four to thirteen.]We just launched the first Computer Science+Crop Science degree program in the country, which has a similar curriculum and transfer requirements as the LAS CS+X’s. (Yes, we have a CS+CS major.) Again, CS+CS students will have access to all the same resources as CS Engineering majors, plus whatever additional resources are provided by the College of ACES.The Computer Engineering program at Illinois, which is ranked #4 in the country by US News, has a nearly identical curriculum to CS—most of the CE core classes are actually taught by the CS department—but it has slightly easier admissions requirements.Neither faculty nor potential employers know or care which species of computing major you are. The only question for you is which of these majors best fits your interests, experience, and career goals. Finally, you should also apply to CS programs at other universities. There are lots of excellent departments both in Illinois (Northwestern, UChicago, UIC, …) and other nearby states (Wisconsin, Michigan, Purdue, Ohio State, …).Best of luck!
