I'm going to assume you live in the United States. If not, I can append my personal experience to this answer.Currently, I volunteer at Moscow School No. 57. It's an elite math and science high school, considered to be one of the top five secondary schools in all of Russia.No math course uses a textbook. The lectures are extremely fast pace and terse, and the students do not interrupt to ask questions. The students don't actually learn during the lecture, they just see the general picture.After the lecture, exercise sheets are handed out. It contains all the definitions, and the statements of some theorems involving the definitions, but no proofs. There are two types of exercisesComing up with examplesProving the theorems in a few steps.The exercise sheets is what they really learn from. They saw the symbols in lecture, but the sheets are what cements their knowledge, and how they discover results. It's kind of a Moore method, but more individual focused instead of groups.I was shocked to see the amount of abstract math they cover in high school. I help 14–15 year olds complete exercises if they are struggling, and I also read their solutions.The tests are oral exams with the lecturer, instead of written. Even Russian Math Olympiad is an oral exam. (Weird)This contrasts heavily with the US system, where most students don't see abstract math and proofs until university. That is, unless they do Olympiad or discover The Art of Problem Solving. But the Russia s do not teach calculus to high school students, which is extremely common in the US.I'm not sure which system I like better.Edit: The students I teach take three different math courses - algebra, geometry, and proofs. Algebra and geometry cover everything the US courses do, in addition to basic combinatorics and number theory. The proof class covers logic, sets, induction, mappings, and then more proofs in combinatorics and number theory.Next year, the students will take a more advanced proof course, studying groups and the basics of analysis. The next algebra and geometry courses cover what I would call linear algebra and 3D geometry.In their final year, students prep for entrance exams to Moscow state University, and take more math analysis.What I found odd is that they never study derivatives or integrals in analysis. Just the construction of the real numbers, limits, sequences and series.Their proof based courses aren't nearly as rigorous as university courses in the US. Frequently, the students will only prove the statement for finite sets, but the lecturer says that is good enough. Problems about sets are proved by drawing Venn diagrams. And many other problems are proved by just drawing a picture and having a student talk through their reasoning.Edit 2: If you want to see some Russian problems, go to Задачи - this is where we have students go for extra practice. I recommend using Google Chrome because it will automatically translate the whole page, and keep all the graphics intact. The site lets you sort by age group, subject, and difficulty.
