Try http://familysearch.org where you can fill out your family tree and continue your research nearly as far back as records are available. They are always releasing new digitally searchable records as well. You can even participate in indexing source records to help others search for their ancestors. There are many apps that can plug into your tree on Family Search to find ancestors who participated in key points of history, or see how closely related you are to people in current popular culture, politics and more.There are several ways to visualize your family tree within the software, including Fan charts, and others. The pictures below are screen captures from my own family with the most recent generations blank to protect the innocent.Within the fan chart you can also color code the chart according to birth country and the number of sources, photos, stories and more.Family Search is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is free for anyone to use. One website I found with dozens of charts is here:Family Tree TemplatesYou can download PDFs that are editable with Adobe Acrobat, Google sheets, Excel, Word or other software, or you can simply print them out and fill them out by hand. My advice is to find the format that is easiest for you to use. A “family tree” school project generally means they want a pedigree chart. These are fairly easy to create. In fact, there are many templates online, like this PDF from the National Genealogical Society (NGS). You can fill in the blanks and save the file or print the chart to paper. There’s a basic chart you can print and hand write the information from Ancestry. There are also fancy charts you can use.Of course, if the teacher gave you a chart to use then use that. When I was assigned to create a family tree in school the teacher handed out the paper form for us to fill out.The next step is to write your information in the space provided. Let’s use the NGS template as an example. Enter your full birth name, your birth date, and birth place. Birth place is usually written as “city/town name, county/province name, country name”. Example: “Buffalo, Erie County, USA”.Since you’re in school I doubt you’re married so leave those fields blank.Then fill in the blanks for your father and mother.Then fill in the blanks for your father’s parents and mother’s parents.Repeat for your great-grandparents too.If you don’t know an exact date, write “Abt.” in front of what you do know. So, say your grandfather was born in 1955 but you’re not sure or you don’t know the month and year, write “Abt. 1955”. Ask your parents and, if possible grandparents though to be as accurate as you can.

Most of the application/software have inbuilt options that is necessary to create a Family Tree.
