What are some interesting uses of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?

HiI have a free eBook called “Environmental Mapping with GIS - Issues and Examples”. You can download it and another eBook at the following links…2020 GIS Education Series Video 1: Quantum GIS Overview - GIS University2020 GIS Education Series Video 2: Traps With Maps - GIS UniversityIn the books I give many examples of GIS studies that I have participated in over the years. Many of the examples relate to using soils for environmental planning (and participatory planning). I suggest you download this eBook because I elaborate on each of the first batch of headings below.Other examples relate to ease-of-digging mapping for retrofitted infrastructure (where can construction people sideways-drill so as to avoid removing trees, cut and fill and how can they avoid solid rock). Most of the soils related work I have done has been for Local Government and Utility Companies…Deriving a Soil Map from a Digital Elevation ModelWater Pipes and Very Detailed GIS Soil EnvironmentsSoil Environment MappingGIS Very Detailed Soil Environment Map and Water Pipe BurstsGIS and Environmental Conflict MinimizationResolving & avoiding environmental Planning ConflictGIS and Aboriginal HeritageMapping Soil Drainage with Satellite ImageryMapping Natural Assets (trees and vegetation)Also, other GIS projects I have been involved with…Housing Market Analysis - what percentage of household income gets spent housing (Client was State Premier’s Department)Mapping real estate sales neighborhoods (Uni Research)Mapping Change In A Real Estate Agent's Market Share (Uni Research)Epidemiology - Mapping disease rates (Uni Research)Site selection for waste disposal dumps in Indonesian Post-Tsunami Banda Aceh (Client was UN). I related geology maps, elevation, road accessibility and a bunch of other maps to give “focus” to the groundworker’s search for sites. Focus is a really important word here. That’s a big part of GIS’s strength - guiding decision makers to where they need to focus their attentionMapping coverage effectiveness of a proposed National Broadband Network (Client was Australian Federal Government)Many economic and census related GIS studies for universities and governmentAnd many more…I hope this helpsIan

Why should Democrats play fair on redistricting in 2020? Can they come up with a ‘blue map’ that will hamstring Republicans for 10 years, the same way the REDMAP handicapped Democrats since 2010?

I was just pondering this, once it became clear that the Far Right Supreme Court majority wasn’t going to do anything about gerrymandering. How about this: propose that we endorse the proposed 50 State Compact where we all agree to nonpartisan redistricting if everyone else does, while at the same time gerrymandering the states we control to the absolute maximum we can get away with, using GIS (Geographical Information Software).?Carrot, stick.I’d voted for California’s nonpartisan redistricting initiative. It gave us tools like Devin Nunes and Darrell Issa. So yeah, I’m having second thoughts about what has amounted to unilateral disarmament.Note the correlation between Red states and gerrymandering. Not 100% but it leans that way strongly. And gerrymandering can make a big difference.Oh wow: Court strikes down North Carolina's GOP-drawn congressional map as partisan gerrymander!

Has anyone used QGIS, and if so, do you recommend that over other open source mapping software?

Certainly QGIS is a better option than Google Maps. As others have said, Google maps is merely a viewer and little if any spatial "analysis" can be done.I teach 4 QGIS courses on Udemy. The first one is probably best for absolute beginners. There’s a series of videos that give you an overview of QGIS here…2020 GIS Education Series Video 1: Quantum GIS Overview - GIS University2020 GIS Education Series Video 2: Traps With Maps - GIS University2020 GIS Education Series Video 3: Digitizing - GIS University2020 GIS Education Series Video 4: Shade By Value - GIS University2020 GIS Education Series Video 5: Geocoding - GIS University
