PDF Editor FAQ

Why is online business in Australia still lagging so far behind the US and Europe? Is our small population and geographical position a disadvantage to invest in?

I would add that it is surely also due to the poor network infrastructures, as compared with Europe, north america, singapore, south korea and others. In the 5000 inhabitants countryside village where I grew up in western europe, I have 20Mbps downlink at any time of the day and I think I experienced one short disconnection in 3 years only. And I pay only 30€ per month. Now in Sydney, the main Australian city, in a nice dense suburb 20km only from the cbd, I only get 6 to 8 Mbps in DL. far from the promise of adsl2. ISPs still market that that adsl2, even though adsl2 is about above 8Mbps DL throughputs. And that is true for most sydneysiders. It took my ISP 3 weeks to open my Internet connection at home! vs 4 days in Europe.there is only one network, which is Telstra's. All other ISPs just connect to Telstra's exchanges to offer you an adsl connection.it seems no one wants to spend in the adsl network to catch up with higher population density and deliver proper connections.Australia still has limited data consumption adsl contracts, whereas in the country I grew up you can only have unlimited.I have experienced several time not getting any 3G coverage in Manly (one of the most hype and wealthiest suburbs in Sydney). That was on Optus network btw.Australia had a chance to truly step in the 21st century a few years ago with the NBN (optic fiber to the home for everyone). but somehow the new government decided that it was too much and Australia was fine staying in the 20th century and they cut NBN budget by a lot, which means true high speed Internet of at least 20Mbps DL (optic fiber means 100Mbps DL a reality) won't be a reality for people in Australia anytime soon.My understanding is that it's the lack of government will and action that explain why Australia still has such a poor quality network in 2014. The government should set ways to pressure ISPs to do their job and invest in their network and they should stimulate competition. All ISPs offer the same services with the same ridiculous throughputs for the same high price.IMO, the poor quality of the network infrastructures explain why Australia can't innovate enough and come with innovative services.just like if everyone still had a nokia 3210 mobile, noone would be able to offer innovative services such as chat, payment, 3d games etc on the mobile. There will be new services in the future that require fiber optic type of connections (tele medicine for instance) and I'm afraid innovations won't come from Australia.

When do you know something has become mainstream?

There’s two ways.1. When everyone, including your grandmother and yoga class instructor, is either doing it or knows someone that knows someone that does it.Take email as an example. Email first appeared in 1971, but it was a niche phenomenon, an obscurity that only researchers and computer nerds used. The email actually predates the Internet. But commercially, the first major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) hit the scene in the early 1990s and popular email services, like Hotmail, followed in 1996. By 1996, 1 in 10 Americans had started to use the Internet and just a year later, Hotmail alone served 9 million users. This means that in 1997, you either used email yourself or knew someone that knew someone who used email in the US. Although email didn’t have a massive reach compared to today, such a small degree of separation between users and knowers meant email had become more than just the obscurity it had been in the 70s and 80s.Email had become mainstream.2. When you start to see and hear about it on television and in movies.Let’s take mobile phones. My father carried around a cumbersome briefcase mobile in the 70s, which was the breakout period for mobile phones in the general population. Before that, mobile phones were exclusively used by the military.Dad then switched to a heavy brick mobile in the 80s (see Michael Douglas with one below) and he still used one of these when I was born in 1988.That’s also when mobile phones started to be seen a lot on TV and movies, like Flight of the Navigator and Raw Deal in 1986, Lethal Weapon and Wall Street 1987, and so on. This further normalised and popularised these devices for the public.Mobile phones had gone mainstream.Wall Street 1987American Psycho (set in the 80s)By the time I started school in 1997, I had the second generation Nokia 3210 in my pocket. So did a number of my classmates.TV in the 90s was also full of mobile phones, including in the series Saved by the Bell and in prolific movies like:Pretty Woman 1990Twin Dragons 1991Speed 1994Mission: Impossible 1996James Bond: Tomorrow Never Dies 1997The Matrix 1999 and so on.Pretty Woman 1990Saved By The Bell 1994So that’s that. Have a look at the brief history of the mobile phone, it might bring back memories. And a brief history of the email too, while you’re at it.Bonus: You might be interested to know that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are at the same breakout stage today. I come across the unlikeliest of people either talking about cryptocurrency or using it themselves. In December 2017, I estimated there are 50 million cryptocurrency users in the world and that was considered optimistic by many. But according to Statista, there are now 50 million users in the EU alone — which is less than a year later. That means 1 in 10 adults has cryptocurrency, similar to how 1 in 10 adults used the Internet in 1997.There are also many mentions on television and music too. CBS’s Big Bang Theory and HBO’s Silicon Valley, BBC’s Coronation Street, Eminem’s new album Kamikaze, Tony Stark even mentions Bitcoin in one of Marvel’s new comics and CBS, one of the most important commercial broadcast television networks in the US, is launching a whole TV series dedicated to Bitcoin. Seems that everybody is “doing cryptocurrency” these days.Hope you enjoyed my answer.I’m also on Hacker Noon / Steemit / Twitter / LinkedInThis message will self-destruct in 5 seconds…

What is the max height of a rocket with a total mass of 10 kg with 8 kg rocket fuel and a homemade engine?

What is your propellant? What is your expansion ratio? Your exhaust velocity? You built an engine and don’t know these things?Your altitude depends on your speed and that depends almost entirely on your engine. To a lesser degree vehicle shape and acceleration rate.If its 8 kg of compressed air, or 8 kg of steam or 8 kg of gunpowder, or 8 kg of hydrogen peroxide, or 8 kg of hydrogen peroxide and rubber, or 8 kg of hydrogen peroxide and gasoline, or liquid oxygen and gasoline, or liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen… in order of increasing difficulty - details count.Assuming you have a solid fuel rocket with a 204 sec Isp. that’s 2 km/sec exhaust speed. Then you use the Tsiokovki equation to calculate ideal speed versus propellant fraction2.0 * ln( 10 kg/(10 kg - 8 kg)) = 3.21 km/sec.Of course you also need to control burn rate so that you do not accelerate too rapidly to avoid air drag loss- and fast enough to accelerat rapidly enough to avoid gravity loss.If you achieved this velocity (you won’t due to air drag and gravity losses) you then calculate your altitude by equating kinetic energy and potential energyE = mgh = 1/2 mV^2 → h = 1/2 * V^2/g = 0.5 * 3210^2/9.81 =525.18 kmIf you can keep it firing straight up. If you can control burn out angle you can fire it 1145.48 km making it an IRBMIf you control thrust so that you have minimum air drag and gravity drag, then you might achieve 2 km/sec.h = 0.5 * 2000^2/9.81 = 203.8 km straight up and 421 km at optimal trajectory.
