I would add that it is surely also due to the poor network infrastructures, as compared with Europe, north america, singapore, south korea and others.In the 5000 inhabitants countryside village where I grew up in western europe, I have 20Mbps downlink at any time of the day and I think I experienced one short disconnection in 3 years only. And I pay only 30€ per month.Now in Sydney, the main Australian city, in a nice dense suburb 20km only from the cbd, I only get 6 to 8 Mbps in DL. far from the promise of adsl2. ISPs still market that that adsl2, even though adsl2 is about above 8Mbps DL throughputs.And that is true for most sydneysiders.It took my ISP 3 weeks to open my Internet connection at home! vs 4 days in Europe.there is only one network, which is Telstra's. All other ISPs just connect to Telstra's exchanges to offer you an adsl connection.it seems no one wants to spend in the adsl network to catch up with higher population density and deliver proper connections.Australia still has limited data consumption adsl contracts, whereas in the country I grew up you can only have unlimited.I have experienced several time not getting any 3G coverage in Manly (one of the most hype and wealthiest suburbs in Sydney). That was on Optus network btw.Australia had a chance to truly step in the 21st century a few years ago with the NBN (optic fiber to the home for everyone). but somehow the new government decided that it was too much and Australia was fine staying in the 20th century and they cut NBN budget by a lot, which means true high speed Internet of at least 20Mbps DL (optic fiber means 100Mbps DL a reality) won't be a reality for people in Australia anytime soon.My understanding is that it's the lack of government will and action that explain why Australia still has such a poor quality network in 2014. The government should set ways to pressure ISPs to do their job and invest in their network and they should stimulate competition. All ISPs offer the same services with the same ridiculous throughputs for the same high price.IMO, the poor quality of the network infrastructures explain why Australia can't innovate enough and come with innovative services.just like if everyone still had a nokia 3210 mobile, noone would be able to offer innovative services such as chat, payment, 3d games etc on the mobile.There will be new services in the future that require fiber optic type of connections (tele medicine for instance) and I'm afraid innovations won't come from Australia.
