Have you ever written a letter of recommendation that didn't say positive things?

Reference letters — which is a far more appropriate term than “recommendation letter” — are supposed to present both positive and negative things (as relevant), though naturally such letters tend to skew positive. I have written letters at different overall levels of positivity, and I have certainly written some negative line items on reference letters, as one has to be honest about written evaluations. However, if one can’t say sufficiently many positive things, then one should simply decline to write a reference letter. If “damning with faint praise” is the most positive thing that one can do in a reference letter (or if it’s more negative than that), then it’s much better off for a person if one just declines to write a letter.
