The recently released Hrithik Roshan-starrer Super 30 gave an insight into the life of a famous teacher and mathematician Anand Kumar. Through his initiative ‘Super-30’, Anand Kumar had helped several students coming from an economically weaker background in preparing for competitive examinations mainly the IIT entrance examination. The movie also diligently outlined Anand Kumar’s struggle against the infamous coaching mafia in Bihar.However several aspects of the movie had to face criticism from the audience; while many questioned Hrithik’s portrayal of Anand Kumar, several questions were also raised on the portrayal of Bihar in the movie. The audience, however, overlooked an important aspect; another individual who played a critical role in the success of ‘Super-30’ was missing in the movie. This individual was none other than, Ex-DGP of Bihar, Abhayanand who is also known to many as the ‘cop with a chalk’.Abhayanand was posted as the Addl. DGP of the state in the 90s when he had met Anand Kumar for the first time. Despite being an IPS officer, Abhayanand was always interested in imparting education to children. Abhayanand had earlier said that he along with Anand Kumar started teaching in 1994. When Anand Kumar had expressed his desire to give free coaching for IIT entrance examination to poor students, Abhayanand supported the idea and laid the foundation for what we know today as ‘Super 30’. After 4 years of continuous hard work, in 2002, Anand and Abhayanand started their program with 30 students. Anand’s mother came forward for arranging food for the poor kids while Anand made arrangements for their stay in nearby houses.With their innovative teaching methodology and continuous mock tests, both Anand and Abhayanand were hopeful of their hard work bearing fruits. According to the duo, even if the students were given the exam papers as they woke up, solving those would be an easy task for the students due to their training. However in 2002 when Super 30’s first batch appeared for the examination, contrary to their expectations only 18 out of the 30 students were successful in clearing the examination.However, instead of losing hope, they got further motivated and put out the application forms for the next batch, for which they later received more than 1000 applications. To select the final students, they had to devise a special screening test. With time, the news of ‘Super 30’ spread throughout Bihar and ultimately people started recognizing this noble initiative throughout India.However, some people were not happy with the success of this initiative. With growing popularity, Super 30 caught the attention of Bihar coaching mafia which ultimately decided to get rid of this initiative. In November of 2004 unknown individuals had attacked Anand Kumar; in the attack, Anand Kumar suffered minor injuries, and one of his associates was seriously injured in the attack. Similarly in February of 2005 also, Super 30 centre was attacked, however this time all the attackers were caught along with their weapons. Abhayanand had then helped Anand Kumar by providing him police security.All these incidents had nearly no impact on Super 30. In 2005, 26 out of the 30 students successfully cleared the IIT entrance exam. Around this time in 2007, Abhayanad had decided to part ways with the Super 30 and went on to lay foundations for ‘Magadh Super 30’, ‘Rahmani Super 30’ on similar lines as the original Super 30 in efforts towards the development of Bihar.One of Anand’s ex-students on ‘Quora’ alleged that Anand would declare the names of his students only after the IIT Results were declared to show to the media and everybody that all his 30 students had passed IIT with flying colors but in reality the number would be mostly way less than 30 and then he would take the names of his other passed students in the institution in which he was teaching into his Super 30 squad, either by bribing them or without their knowledge. This dirty habit of Anand’s led Abhayanand to part ways with him.However in the movie, despite immense his contribution, Abhayanand didn’t even find a mention in the movie in which he should have been praised. It is a shame that the person along whom Anand Kumar had started the revolutionary initiative didn’t even find a place in Anand Kumar’s own Biopic.
