The following incident happened in December 2016 at IIT Kharagpur. It relates to a friend of mine (Let's call him X).He was all set to start his compulsory 6-month internship at Reckitt Benckiser (RB) from January 2017. He is in a core branch focused on Mechanical Engineering and the HOD, Faculty Advisor (FacAd) and the Professors had summoned them not to take any non-core internships.However, X was interested in finance and had applied to various firms like Nomura, Bank of NY, JPMC, etc. hoping that he would somehow convince the department to allow it. In November 2016, X was selected for Nomura, but our FacAd didn’t approve it. He gave up and applied for a couple of core companies - ITC and RB. Finally, he left for his home during the winter break after receiving an offer from RB and taking a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the department for it.On the day before the start of his internship, he got a call from the HR at JPMC asking him whether he is still interested. He replied in the affirmative as JPMC was his dream company. Soon he received an email from the same HR which required him to submit a NOC from his department. All his hopes were shattered as he remembered his previous encounter with Nomura. But still, he thought of giving it a try. He called up one of his friends at IIT Kharagpur (Let's call him Y) and explained him the entire situation. He asked Y to try and convince his FacAd to sign the form.Then Y did something that very few people know at IIT Kharagpur, and we still share a laugh whenever it comes up. X sent the NOC application form to Y which had the name of the firm in abbreviation - 'JPMC' and not JP Morgan Chase. The conversation between Y and the FacAd was as follows:Y: Sir, this is the NOC application for 6-months internship of my friend X who is in Delhi right now, and it requires your signature.FacAd: Okay! Which company is he joining?Y: Sir, JPMC in Mumbai.FacAd: What’s JPMC? I have never heard of it.Y: Sir, JP Manufacturing Company (confidently)! Its a quality driven manufacturer of plastic injection molded optical and non-optical products.FacAd: Ohh yes. Now I remember. Good Good. Wish him good luck. (And he signed the application)X joined JP Morgan Chase and not JP Manufacturing Company and Y got a treat from X. We still can’t believe how he was able to pull this off.
