‘Most awesome day of my life’ my daughter used to tell us every time she got a new school bag; which recurred at alarming frequency. School bag to pet cat, bi-cycle to college admission, for her, everything good was ‘most’ awesome.Similarly, she described every pain as the worst ever, from an unseen abrasion at home to a minor cut in school; for her it was the ‘worst-ever-pain’.It is really difficult to ‘scale’ a kid’s happiness or pain.Generally, diseases are described as mild, moderate or severe. Doctors try to estimate the severity of disease, more precisely by ‘grading’ them by creating scales; so that precise treatment can be planned up and progress recorded. From hypertension to heart attack, from trauma to tumour; we have a scale for everything.But what about pain; especially when expressed by children?This question didn’t bother most doctors, because they thought it was impossible to scale the pain of a crying kid. The standard method was to ask the mother for an arbitrary estimate. Pain scales were available but they were useless or too cumbersome for kids.Donna Lee Wong, working as a paediatric nurse at Tulsa, Oklahoma thought otherwise. Her years of familiarity with kids in the ward made her believe that a kid’s pain can be measured; something that doctor’s didn’t think was possible. She, along with a child-life specialist, Connie Baker developed a series of cartoon faces ‘smileys’ to ‘cry-face’ and labelled them from zero to 10. Kids could easily touch (indicating where they thought they belonged) and suddenly, it looked so simple. Also, it provided an objective scale to monitor progression or regression of symptoms. Today Wong-Baker scale is textbook standard.Donna Wong (author the famous nursing handbook of paediatrics) was diagnosed to have leukemia in 2003, and died in 2008 from pneumonia.She clearly showed that there are things that a nurse can sense, by being with the patients; that degree clad, ego inflated doctors can’t figure out, during their 30-second patient interaction.Everyone can do something, that others cannot. God has given ‘eyesight’ to everyone as a part of the standard equipment; with an option to upgrade to ‘vision’. Only a few care to upgrade.

Biden is part of the old school center right Democrats.He’s not a progressive and has no real history of being one.The Republican party is extreme right.Old School Democrats like Biden are center right.Progressives are centrists/moderates and are trying to bring the Democratic party back to the moderate center.FTR, I’d vote for Biden, or any reasonable Democrat, in a heartbeat over Trump. I just don’t think he’s demonstrated his support for progressive policies over his decades in service.
