I wrote a long answer to this one, and then deleted it all.Why?Because my answer wasn’t about high schools - it was about the society that produces them. Our society isn’t a great one in the education department.If we wanted better education, we could surely have it. It’s commonly known that summer vacation is not good for learning. And yet we have it. Sitting for long periods of time is not ideal for many students. And yet we do it. The structure of elementary schools does terrible things to many boys. And yet we keep it. The structure of middle and high schools does terrible things to many girls. And yet we promote it.Our schools are so riddled with inefficiencies and shortcomings that I could write a thousand answers on the topic. But, I can sum them all up into one basic idea:We don’t care about education.If we did, schools would get amazing equipment and top-notch resources. But today, teachers in my building were told we use too much paper.If we did, academic superstars would have a special day where they were lauded by their fellow classmates. But last week, students in my building were pulled out of class to witness signing day, a day where future athletes are lauded by their fellow classmates.If we did, experimentation would lead to techniques that were recognized and used across the profession. But today, in classrooms across the country, teachers were forced to wing it because they had no idea what to do to help their students after years of failed attempts.If we did, parents would call teachers, curiously inquiring about the well-being of their children, and helping design a way forward for them. But instead, I can’t reach half my parents no matter how hard I try.If we did, states would spend billions of dollars renovating and upgrading facilities. But states spend billions of dollars on new sports stadiums instead.There was a time when almost no one in this country graduated from high school. Then, around 1910, we decided as a nation that education was the future. We put our money where our mouth was and built great schools across the country. And we told students, “This is the future. Your mind is your greatest asset. Let’s build it up.”High school has barely changed in the ensuing 100 years, while the world outside has morphed into a future that the graduating class of 1914 would barely recognize.Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Oh, it’s not that bad. We care about education!”Well, try this little quiz with me.Who is this:OK. Who is this:How about this guy:and now him:Yeah, that’s what I thought. What if I told you that the two you didn’t know were Tu Youyou and Tim Berners-Lee. Feeling any better?Maybe you know who Berners-Lee is (though I’m betting many of you don’t). But Tu Youyou? Yeah, me neither.We don’t care about education. Not in the way we care about music or sports we don’t.What’s wrong with American high schools? I am. And so are you. We don’t care about them. We don’t care enough to vote in politicians who will raise our taxes to pay for them. We don’t care enough to run for school board, or even attend school board meetings. We don’t care enough to call our governors and demand better schools for our students. We don’t donate to schools.We don’t care about education.

I'm a Michiganian and a public school teacher.I. Am. Horrified.DeVos is the wife of Dick DeVos, a man who ran for governor of Michigan a while back. The couple is famous for wanting to privatize just about everything the government does, but particularly schools. In Michigan they wanted to allow public school students to take their tuition dollars with them from a public school to a private one.This is in keeping with Trump’s campaign promise to eliminate or greatly reduce the Department of Education.One great way to do that is strip public schools of their funding. The good news is that public school districts typically get only 5% - 15% of their funding from the federal government. The bad news is that most public schools are perilously close to financial ruin.How will DeVos change education? I'm too scared to consider it for too long. But I have to imagine that the first order of business will be to cut funding for public schools. This will allow rich white taxpayers to stop paying quite so much so that “lazy freeloaders” can get a free education. Since many wealthy white voters send their kids to private schools already, they feel that school taxes are a waste of their money.In addition, the private school industry is almost certainly licking their chops. Companies large and small stand to make a killing lapping up the scraps from the table of education funding.Worst case scenario? Districts across the country start to fold due to lack of funds (already happening in some districts). The government responds by promoting private and charter and religious schools as alternatives. This spiral continues until public schools cease to exist as we think of them today. They are replaced by a patchwork of unregulated “schools” that provide levels of education ranging from good to pathetic.Guess who is going to get the pathetic schools? I'll give you a hint: Bannon and the alt-right won't mind in the slightest.DeVos is a terrible choice and will weaken public schools every chance she gets. This will only weaken us as a nation.I. Am. Horrified.

Its 23yrs later, how do you still want white people to show remorse? Given the fact that FW De Klerk did apologise obo the apartheid government and white people. I think WAY too much time gets spent discussing the white man having had so much advantages etc in the past and how the black man is entitled to the same advantages. It’s been 23yrs of BEEE. How has the anc government changed this country to be better than it was before? Where is the freedom for its people, the upliftment of its people, the actual empowerment of its people?All the anc government has done is to plunder the coffers and line their own pockets. I am not generalising or thumb sucking. You only need look around you in this country to see how poverty has increased, homelessness has increased unemployment has increased, crime has increased. All negative things have increased.I am an indian woman who grew up in the apartheid era, I do not agree with what apartheid stood for or how our black brother suffered for it, and hey the indian people also suffered. You don’t see us sitting and crying oh the white people must apologise, we work our butts off and do our best to give our children a better future. No sense of entitlement here. What I do appreciate in the apartheid government was that the education system was way better, cheaper and available. We did not have students who couldn’t find a place in school, or parents who could not afford to have their child in school, we didn’t have to pay exorbitant amounts for books and textbooks or school fees. In this government, education is a privilege not a right. The education department is so badly run that every few years they change the curriculum, its difficult to keep up with what is even being taught. not to mention that parents are now doing more of the teaching than the actual teachers according to how the new curriculum works. There is forever no money to fund schools etc, which bring a whole host of other problems. Not to mention that you can never get hold of any government employee to find out anything, and this does not only apply to the education department it applies to any government department.Education is just one area where the anc government has dismally failed this country.How about we as a country, get an apology from the anc government for failing to run this country they way it should be run, how about an apology for the anc government eating our hard earned taxes, using our money to go on expensive holidays and buy expensive houses and cars, funneling money offshore to protect their own futures whilst blatantly ignoring the people of this country who they were supposed to liberate from the apartheid government?That is what I would like to see/hear.
