So the second choice would be a digital piano, but it might be the only practical choice.In these circumstances I normally recommend the Yamaha P45 as the first choice. It is the cheapest digitial piano with a weighted key action (an essential component for a learner - beware of simple touch sensitive or plain synth keyboards, they are not good enough) that I know off. It will do someone for their beginning years BUT they will outgrow it when they progress. Do expect to need something better in a couple of years time. But if the whole piano idea turns out to be a bad idea, and you need to sell it, the loss won’t be too great. However if you can afford better, take a look at the ranges by Kawai, Yamaha and Roland. There are some really nice “furniture style” pianos that would look good in the home and with a range of prices. A table top is the wrong height. You will need a chair or a piano stool, although most chairs are not too far out height wise, but lack of adjustment might mean you have to use cushions or something for a while. This P45 has a stand for music, but it comes (I think - mine is stored away at the moment) with a very rudimentary sustain pedal. Don’t worry it not used for the first couple of years of learning. Prior to these pandemic times I would have said the physical presence of a teacher was importance, but my 7 year old grandson begged to start music lessons (his old brother had had them for almost two years) and we reluctantly started him with Zoom lessons with my teacher.
