What are the best topics for an oral presentation?
If you really have no restrictions, there’s one obvious “best oral presentation topic”: The Life and Times of Lau Wen Han (a.k.a you)User-11820153772723669240 hit on the central issue: when you present about something you know nothing about, you’ll leave everyone (including yourself) unsatisfied at best, but you’re more likely to crash and burn. Here’s what I think will happen, if you go ahead with your plan:You’ll spend a lot of time doing research, possibly more time than you budgetedYou’ll end up with a boatload of disjoint facts and long narrativesYou’ll struggle to compress and tie them all together into a coherent talk, because you don’t really understand how they interlockYou have a nagging feeling that you’re missing something important, but you can’t figure out what it isYou’ll write out a whole script for your presentation, because you can’t trust yourself not to lose your way through your jumbled pile of factsYou can’t stop yourself from wondering about that something importantYou’ll read from that script instead of engaging with the audience, almost guaranteed to put everyone to sleepSome wiseguy will ask a question that touches on that something important, and your entire presentation will be derailed while you struggle to answer itYou’ll get a grade, probably not a good one.If you decide instead to talk about your own life, none of the above applies. But what should I say about myself?!?!Let’s look at your Quora bio as of 31 Jan 2017:In just those five line items, I think you have enough material for at least a full-day talk:Your home town (Alor Setar): what’s so special about it; a couple of things you think even those who hail from the same town don’t knowYour home state (Kedah): what’s so special about it; how much do you think its proximity to Thailand has influenced the population, compared to (say) how Singapore has “corrupted” the southernmost Peninsular Malaysia state of JohorYour home country (Malaysia): how do you feel about it; what impresses you most about your fellow citizens; what do you wish they’d do betterHow did you come by your “loves everything” attitude? An inspiring teacher? An open-minded parent? A daring childhood friend? How did you manage to secure admission to Harvard? How did you manage to graduate from Harvard by age 16?What’s so fascinating about San Quentin State Prison? Are there any notable people incarcerated there? What were they locked up for?Why do we say “spacetime” rather than the separate words “space” and “time”? What’s so interesting about it? How does it affect our daily lives (e.g. GPS)? What is one interesting spacetime fact that would make you look like a physicist at a cocktail party? The problem now becomes one of cutting out enough stuff to fit into the time available for your presentation. If I were you, I’d just talk about that Harvard thing — I guarantee you’ll have the entire audience eating out of your hand.Good luck!
What would you do if your bridesmaids all decided to ditch you on your wedding day?
This happened to me. Not all of my bridesmaids ditched, though. Only one.Well, what do I say? I love my friend dearly. She truely is a gem, she's just amazingly shy which is one of the endearing things about her that I love so much. I wasn't offended at all that she skipped. She's done things like that before, and it's just who she is. For example, she had a part in a church play that she skipped out on last minute due to severe stage fright. I had to fill in for her. I felt a bit silly because I didn't know her lines, so I had to stand up with her script in hand and change costumes several times. The only biggie it was was the laugh we had over the whole thing afterwards.Another time, she skipped out on a choir performance for a mutli-church conference. She excused herself to the restroom, but didn't come back until well after we got off the stage. Again, no big deal. There were so many girls, we weren't lacking voices. She skipped out of a few finals in her college classes because she couldn't bring herself to give an oral presentation. She's lucky she was able to work with her professors and got a degree at all.As for my wedding, I wasn't picky about nearly anything. I, and many people in my church, set up and got everything together ourselves. My wedding cost close to nothing, including my dress, I kid you not! (I actually have a post about it.) All my bridesmaids just so happened to already have formal dresses in the blue that I wanted. Their dresses were all in different styles which added character to my wedding. I loved it! We did each other's hair, and had a great time! It really was awesome!Anyway, one of my bridesmaids, my dear friend, didn't show up to the ceremony due to having cold feet. She couldn't stand the thought of standing up in front of all those people. As soon as I realized she wasn't there, I already understood why and didn't think a thing about it. I wasn't lacking for bridesmaids, I already had nearly double the number of my soon-to-be husband's groomsmen. Honestly, I felt bad for her because I knew she felt wretched about ditching and would hold it against herself, but I wasn't upset or offended at all.Since then, both myself and my missing-in-action bridesmaid have moved to different states, but we still keep in touch.Love you, Deena, you endearingly bashful girl!
How erudite was Gandalf?
Thank you Ramit for the A2A!Not being erudite myself, I had to look up “erudite”. All-knowing Wikipedia says “Erudition is the depth, polish and breadth that education confers.”If we accept that ‘education’ can consist of both formal learning as well as the informal accumulation of knowledge and wisdom through life experience, then there can be no doubt that by the time of the War of the Ring, Gandalf was far and away the single most erudite being ever to exist within Arda.Gandalf’s formal education consisted of three primary sources:Eru Ilúvatar’s Vision of Arda. This is the ultimate and most foundational source of all knowledge, lore and wisdom within the world of Arda, and those mighty Ainur spirits who partook of the broadest and deepest draughts of that incredible Vision were known as the Valar. Melkor’s share of the Vision was greater than any other spirit’s; this was why he was the mightiest of all the Valar. But as a Maia, Olórin (Gandalf’s original name) glimpsed a significant amount of the Vision; this made him more erudite than any elf, dwarf, Man or other non-Ainur being could possibly ever become. And it’s clear he had a deeper understanding of the Vision than even the vast majority of the Maiar; The Silmarillion states “Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin.”Lore of the Valar. Within the Blessed Realm of Aman, it was customary for Maiar spirits to dedicate themselves in honorable servitude to the particular Vala they were most closely drawn to by nature. In return for their service, it is my belief that each Vala instructed his or her vassal Maiar into as much of the Eru’s Vision as the Vala felt proper to impart to a lesser spirit. The elves who dwelt in Valinor were given a limited subset of this lore, such as Galadriel who “… had early absorbed all of what she was capable of the teaching which the Valar thought fit to give the Eldar.” A few rare Maiar gave their allegiance to multiple Valar, thus gaining access to more facets of the Vision, albeit in the form of interpreted lore rather than direct experiential insight. By doing so, these spirits expanded their understanding of Arda and therefore increased their potential knowledge and power. Sauron was one of these, “In his beginning he was of the Maiar of Aulë, and he remained mighty in the lore of that people.” With that knowledge base as a foundation, Sauron became tremendously powerful when combining it with the lore bestowed upon him by Melkor. How much more insight must Gandalf have possessed then, since he was a vassal of not only two of the greatest Valar, but a pupil of several others?Manwë and Varda. It is parenthetically recorded in Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth that there existed (“… some rough tables relating the names of the Istari to the names of the Valar: Olórin to Manwë and Varda …”). Additionally, during the Council of the Valar that sent the Istari to Middle-earth, Manwë selected Olórin as his representative, and Varda seconded him.Irmo (b.k.a. Lórien). It was said that Olórin “… dwelt in Lórien …”. Lórien was known as “… the master of visions and dreams” so it is no mystery why Olórin (Quenya: “Dreams”) would have an affinity for him and be receptive to his instruction.Nienna. Additionally, Olórin’s “ … ways took him often to the house of Nienna, and of her he learned pity and patience.” Don’t think that sounds too impressive? Ask Bilbo and Frodo Baggins how important pity was to their lives, not to mention the outcome of the War of the Ring.Possibly Yavanna, who gave him the Elessar stone which he brought with him to Middle-earth and gave to Galadriel. “Olórin said: ‘This I bring to you from Yavanna. Use it as you may, and for a while you shall make the land of your dwelling the fairest place in Middle-earth.’ ”Study of oral and written lore. There are numerous examples of Gandalf’s prodigious knowledge of the lore of Middle-earth, painstakingly gathered through weary research in many lands. Gandalf spoke many languages, including obscure ones such as the Black Speech of Mordor invented by Sauron. He claimed “I once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves or Men or Orcs, that was ever used for such a purpose. I can still remember ten score of them without searching in my mind.” Though not quite as accomplished in this regard as Saruman the White, Gandalf possessed a thorough and intimate knowledge of, and experience with, the lore of the Rings of Power, both great and small. Additionally, he had spent much time amongst the “… hoarded scrolls and books …” of the great library of Gondor, including “… many records that few even of the lore-masters now can read, for their scripts and tongues have become dark to later men.”(Gandalf in the Library of Minas Tirith)But that was only the beginning. Gandalf’s real erudition lay in the education he derived from his vastly deep and broad life experience. Gandalf was the most widely traveled person to ever live in Middle-earth and though he did not go as far south into Harad “… where the stars are strange …” as Aragorn II did or as far east as Saruman, Alatar and Pallando, Gandalf tirelessly visited and revisited all the lands of northwestern Middle-earth over and over again for two millennia. Samuel Clemens remarked, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime” and truer words were never spoken. It’s important to note that Gandalf was no mere sight-seer, he was deeply and intimately involved in the daily lives and the momentous historical events of both the rulers and the common peoples of all the various realms, absorbing vast amounts of knowledge in the process. There was not a single sentient race within Middle-earth — ents, elves, dwarves, Men, hobbits, eagles, orcs, trolls, even a Balrog — with which Gandalf did not have extensive experience. He was a frequent guest of, and collaborator with, all of the great elven lords including Círdan the Shipwright, Galadriel, Glorfindel, Gildor Inglorion, Elrond Peredhel and his sons, and Thranduil of Mirkwood. He was an advisor to the kings of the dwarves and was the last person to see Thráin II alive, not to mention organizing the Quest of Erebor with Thráin’s son Thorin II Oakenshield. He was a trusted advisor to lords of Men in Gondor, Rohan and Rhovanion. Gandalf was friend to eagles and ents, and doubtless to other obscure creatures. Alone of the Wise, Gandalf actively cultivated “… hobbit-lore: an obscure branch of knowledge, but full of surprises.” While not titularly the head of the Heren Istarion (Quenya: “Order of Wizards”), Gandalf was one of the Wise and Galadriels’ choice to head the White Council, of which he was by far the most active member.Gandalf’s life experience was not limited to mere conversation and book-learning. In addition to lore and enchantment, Gandalf also mastered the arts of combat. Over the long years he slew just about every minion of evil that existed in Middle-earth, from the orcs of the Misty Mountains to the trolls of the Ettenmoors, to the savage Wargs of Wilderland, and even a Balrog of Morgoth. Had the Witch-king of Angmar not chosen to flee from him at the gate of Minas Tirith, Gandalf would have added another notch on his staff. (see Thomas Snerdley's answer to What is your favourite quote from the movie/book The Lord of the Rings?)In addition to his martial prowess, Gandalf actively cultivated experiments into new areas of knowledge, most famously in the field of pyrotechnics, of which he was acknowledged as a past master. As Samwise Gamgee put it: “The finest rockets ever seen: they burst in stars of blue and green, or after thunder golden showers came falling like a rain of flowers. Though that doesn’t do them justice by a long road.” He also became the first of the Wise to experiment with the hobbitish invention of smoking pipe-weed and became a virtuoso in the blowing of smoke-rings. Gandalf’s life was a living example of the Buddhist precept “Do not think the knowledge you have now is changeless. Be ready to learn throughout your entire life.”If all that isn’t enough to convince you of Gandalf’s peerless erudition, allow me to lay one final weight of evidence in the scales: Gandalf was one of only two resurrected beings to ever walk beneath the Sun in Middle-earth. The mind boggles when attempting to conceive of the mystical secrets Gandalf the White was privy to after his personal encounter with Eru Ilúvatar. “I strayed out of thought and time, and I wandered far on roads that I will not tell. … There I lay staring upward, while the stars wheeled over, and each day was as long as a life-age of the earth. Faint to my ears came the gathered rumour of all lands: the springing and the dying, the song and the weeping, and the slow everlasting groan of over-burdened stone. … I have passed through fire and deep water, since we parted. I have forgotten much that I thought I knew, and learned again much that I had forgotten. I can see many things far off …”.Because Gandalf realized that learning never ends, naturally when the War of the Ring was over, but before departing on the White Ship for Valinor, he made a special effort to acquire even more knowledge and wisdom. As he told the hobbits, “… if you would know, I am turning aside soon. I am going to have a long talk with Bombadil: such a talk as I have not had in all my time. He is a moss-gatherer, and I have been a stone doomed to rolling. But my rolling days are ending, and now we shall have much to say to one another.’ ”So if he got a little cocky about his erudition once in a while — and he did, as he told the Three Hunters “… I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to …” — hey, Gandalf earned it.
