This is pretty much simple math.Right now, the United States is seeing about 40,000 new cases diagnosed every day. The real figure may be higher because many people who show symptoms still can’t get tested easily. Nevertheless, we have 40,000 cases for sure.Now, in the absence of protective measures like masks and social distancing, the average infected person will pass the disease off to 2.5 people.2.5 people doesn’t sound like a lot, but remember that people who have the disease but aren’t yet showing symptoms can pass it off to others. Most of that 2.5 average will have the virus before the person who passed it to them shows symptoms. By the time you realize you’ve been exposed, it’s too late - you’ve got it. Once a person is showing symptoms, most people are smart enough to use masks and social distancing. It’s just too late.So, if today we have 40,000 people getting the disease, and they’re walking around and interacting with other people on a normal basis, including their families, and they each pass it off to 2.5 people on average, in the next week, 2.5 times 40,000 is….How about that. 100,000 cases.Now, the unfortunate thing is that a sick person can easily pass the virus off to a massive amount of people. This is called a “superspreader”. One lady in South Korea had the virus and went to church and 5,000 people in and around the church were infected - half the total number of cases in South Korea. In a meat packing plant in South Dakota, one sick worker passed the disease off to close to 180 workers and their family members. In my home province of Ontario, one sick migrant worker passed the disease off to 127 people working with him. That accounted for half the new cases in Canada that day, and the vast majority of the cases in Ontario. In one case, one asymptomatic person at a choir practice passed the disease on to 45 of the 60 people there. Two of them died.Let’s face it. The major danger of coronavirus isn’t “sick people”. It’s people who have the virus who don’t feel sick. Those fall into two groups - the people who pass it along during the four day incubation period before it can show symptoms, and the people who never show symptoms. That second group can spread the disease for up to 14 days before their own immune system finishes it off. Again, in Ontario, half the cases were traced to asymptomatic carriers of the disease.
