PDF Editor FAQ

In Oklahoma, can a Native American student on an IEP be expelled from a school if the school believes the child does not live in the district?

Being Native American has nothing to do with not being allowed to attend a particular school if you don’t live in the district. Neither does having an IEP. If you don’t live in a school’s district you can’t attend that school without a transfer approved by both school districts. If you try to fake your way in and get caught you will be asked to leave. It’s not really being expelled, as in a disciplinary action. Please don’t try to make this a race, or educational discrimination issue. On the other hand, being Native American or having an IEP doesn’t give you a special privilege to ignore district lines and rules either. The rules are the same on that for everyone. It has to do with the money the school district gets from the state for the child and space in the classrooms, nothing else.

How can you live independently in this world?

Begin at the beginning. Take as many transition assessments as possible, you should be able to request those from you IEP teacher or caseload manager. I recommend the TAGG, Casey's life skills, the AIR self determination assessments from the Zarrow center at Oklahoma University, as well as many others. These will tell you where your problem areas are. The most effective transtion assessments require time and cooperation from your teachers and parents. Many have several different components and require a commitment of time and energy so don't be surprised if it takes a minute to get this done. You can begin by accessing Casey's life skills online, but be aware it is not an in depth or scientifically complete survey.Once you have a clear picture of what your strengths and weaknesses are you can help your teacher begin to develop a transition plan. A transition plan is a plan to go from one stage of life to another. Develop a plan that will help you develop the skills you are lacking. Begin with one area and work on it, assessing your progress as you go. Don't get discouraged. Take a step at a time.

How many students with IEPs can be in a regular classroom?

Not an easy question to answer, simply. It varies by age, level of disability, state, and district attitude. That last is not legal, but is a fact. Most states have an upper limit on class size, by age, etc. and compute what is called full time teacher equivalent (FTE) from that. FTE is how many full time teachers are required for a given class load. Here is an Oklahoma chart, that I think is typical. https://sde.ok.gov/sites/ok.gov.sde/files/SpecEd-CaseloadClassSize.pdfYou have to consider the level for each special ed student, categorized as:Students Inside the regular class 80 percent or more of the day;Students Inside the regular class less than 40 percent of the day; andStudents In separate schools, residential facilities, or homebound/hospital placements. You may also factor in the use of aides, etc.So, sorry, no easy answer. As a basic rule, however, max 50%. More would always violate the LRE (least restrictive environment) principle. How many students with IEPs can be in a regular classroom?

I think this is an excellent software, but there are things I'm still learning, so my review really only points to the one thing that annoys me. You have to sign in and be connected to the internet to ensure the software gives full access, even though i purchased full download. I moved from Apple mac to PC recently, and have given up Apple's very good free product called Preview. The jury is still out as to whether or not i did the right thing.
