I got a letter from the Ohio BMV saying that I have been randomly chosen to prove I have insurance on one of my vehicles. I do have insurance, have always had insurance, (at least for the last 25 years or so) As I got to thinking about it, it started bugging me because it seems that this violates my 4th, and possibly my 5th, and potentially my 6th amendment rights. The letter kindly apologizes for any inconvenience, then states that if I do not comply, my license will be suspended. I begrudgingly intend to comply, just to avoid any hassle, but before I do (I have 3 weeks) I was hoping someone could explain to me how this can be legal. I can kind of understand having to prove compliance during a traffic stop, but randomly??? Through the mail??? The audacity of these people is troubling. Game on.”

What would you do if someone crashed into you on the road and drove off?

What would you do if someone crashed into you on the road and drove off?Would?I thankfully had the presence of mind to start taking notes. It was my sophomore year of college. My roommate, a couple buddies, and I, had all embarked on a trek to Dayton to see a show.In the middle of Columbus Ohio, where I70 and 71 have a short jaunt together, was where it happened. My roommate had one of those stereotypical “bought from Granny who drove it to church and the store” 1973 Ford Maverick. It was a 4 door. The drawback was, it was all original. So, it had an AM radio.I thoughtfully had brought along my portable CD player so we could have tunes on the drive. And, at that particular moment, I was distracted, trading music, when I heard my roommate, driving, make a peculiar noise.I looked over at him and his eyes were about the size of a coffee cup.At that moment, I looked right and saw the tire of a semi truck start rubbing on the door.We were right next to the drive tires of a tractor trailer, and it was in the act of pushing us into the guardrail. The anemic horn of the Maverick wasn’t loud enough to get the driver’s attention, but when his “merge” into our lane was thwarted by, well, an actual car, he finally moved over and we pulled off to the side. There were two incomplete “O” shapes, one on each of the passenger side doors, of black rubber where they’d rubbed, and the fancy chrome trim was gone.I actually had to “Dukes of Hazzard” to get out, because the door and the front fender had been mashed enough together it didn’t open. The driver walked back.“Didn’t you see me coming over? I had my signal on.”“We had noplace to go, didn’t you see the car next to you or hear me honking the horn?” was the reply from my roommate. The two passengers in the back were shaken up and said nothing.I had pondered having a Camel but before I could berate the semi driver, he looked us all over.“Well, nobody got hurt. These things happen.”He turned and walked back toward his tractor trailer. When it started moving, we were all shocked.I grabbed the first thing at hand, my pack of Camels, and started writing.(Thankfully, I had a pen on me, and I’ve strived to have one pretty much always especially because of this event)I wrote the trailer license plate, I wrote the “carrier” name off the trailer, and even got the tractor license plate and the name off the tractor. Now, we’re at the “what now” part. This was in 1998.My room mate had a cellular phone. One of the first people I knew with one.He called 911, got routed to the appropriate agency, and we waited.About an hour went by and a cop car showed up.“Oh, you want Highway Patrol, I’m Freeway Patrol”, and he drove off. Finally the right folk drove up, took a report, along with all the info I’d written down.Driver was from and based out of New York State.“Hit and Run” with a Commercial Vehicle meant he lost his license.I mean, an accident probably wouldn’t have gone well, but still…It totalled my room mate’s ride.Oh sure, it still drove, but it had two stripes down the driver side where he rubbed the guard rail and that hit every body panel, and on the passenger side, the truck drive wheels had damaged both doors and the front fender and, I noticed later, the back fender. But had we been a little further back when the guy had decided to merge, we probably would have gone under the trailer and died.He later got an even cooler “Grandma only drove” car, a Plymouth Fury, either a 65 or 66, with the insurance money. That thing was a boat.

Are there any rural areas in the USA that are known for having a high rate of violent crime ? If so then which areas are those ?

Are there any rural areas in the USA that are known for having a high rate of violent crime ? If so then which areas are those ?Yes.There has been a rise in rural crime in the last few years, but it has always been there. Poverty, hopelessness and crime go hand in hand, and it's not solely an urban or racial minority problem. In my father's generation there were rural people in Appalachia making and selling illegal alcohol like moonshine, wine or whatever else that they could produce from local plants. Gathering dandelions for wine or growing extra corn or fruits to make alcohol to sell for cash to buy the things that they couldn't produce is an old story. Those old fictional stories about hiding stills from “revenuers" and running from the police on rural roads in fast cars didn't come simply from fertile imaginations.During my time in law enforcement in the 1980s the big illegal cash crop in rural southeastern Oklahoma was marijuana, and those people were definitely armed with lots of guns and not afraid to use them. They would use trip wires with explosives to booby trap areas and even mercury switches on doorknobs. Things got worse when the efforts shifted to methamphetamine production.Once a pot farmer decided to fire a couple of rounds at a highway patrol helicopter that he saw from his pot field. He got a nasty surprise because that was the governor observing National Guard eradication efforts at a nearby pot farm, and Mr. Trigger Happy next saw an armed Army National Guard helicopter clear the tree line. Guess who had bigger guns?Pick a state and look up their violent crime statistics for areas other than cities over 10,000 residents. New Hampshire, West Viginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma, Iowa and Oregon all have increased rural crime and contrary to the narrative being pushed by one political party, the areas are not liberal enclaves.See the linked articles on the subject. In Iowa, the overall violent crime rate rose by 3 percent between 2006 and 2016, but shot up by 50 percent in communities with fewer than 10,000 residents. Violent crime rates have doubled in rural counties in West Virginia over the past couple of decades, while tripling in New Hampshire. “Rural areas, which traditionally have had lower crime rates, have seen dramatic increases in incarceration rates,” says Jacob Kang-Brown, a senior research associate with the Vera Institute of Justice. “We see them now having the highest incarceration rates in the country.”The explanations for this change are familiar ones. Not all rural areas are poor, but many have lost jobs as factories have closed and farming has become increasingly consolidated. Lack of employment has naturally led to increases in poverty, which is closely associated with crime. The opioid epidemic has hit rural America particularly hard, and methamphetamine remains a major problem in many small towns. In Rural America, Violent Crime Reaches Highest Level in a DecadeAccording to Pew Research, violent crime in the United States has fallen sharply in the past 25 years. For the first time in a decade, violent crime in rural areas has surpassed the national average, as the website Governing reported. The reasons for this state of affairs are severalfold: Although all rural areas are not poor, poverty has increased, which has led to an increase in crime. Employment has fallen in the countryside as farming has consolidated and manufacturing jobs have left. Further, the opioid crisis, as well as the methamphetamine epidemic, continue to make their presence known in small towns as a driver of crime. Finally, there are fewer law enforcement resources in the country due to shrinking tax bases, with fewer jail cells, and sheriff’s deputies required to cover significantly larger patrol areas than their urban counterparts. This rural reality provides an opening for criminal activity such as drug dealing to thrive. These findings from Governing come on the heels of another recent study revealing that rural jails have the highest rate of pretrial detention in the country. A 2013 study from the Annals of Emergency Medicine concluded that large cities are among the safest places in which to live. The study found the risk of injury death, including both accidents and violent crime, is more than 20 percent greater in the country than in big cities, rebutting the common perception that urban areas are inherently more dangerous than other regions. As Crime Falls Nationwide, White, Conservative Rural Areas Fuel A New Prison BoomViolence and Abuse in Rural America Introduction - Rural Health Information Hub
