PDF Editor FAQ

Why do many people still consider the South to be racist, even though Tim Scott and Nikki Haley (both minorities) had large majority votes within their elections and are elected by Republicans from South Carolina?

Racism is today a very casual charge levied by progressives against any and all who oppose their agenda. It detracts from the historic savage racism that was present, not just in the South but throughout North America as recently as the 1960s.Does real racism still exist today in America? Yes, but it’s certainly not institutional and anti discrimination laws are widely in effect. Not only is Tim Scott an African American Senator from South Carolina and Nikki Haley an East Indian former governor of that state. But Bobby Jindal, an East Indian was a 2 term governor of Louisiana, Susanna Martinez is a Hispanic governor of New Mexico and Brian Sandoval is the outgoing Hispanic governor of Nevada. They are all Republicans, all minorities and they were elected by Republicans. In fact there would be more elected Republican minorities, most notably African American John James in Michigan and Mia Love re-elected in Utah, if Democrats had voted for them.Is anyone claiming that Democrats in Michigan are racist because John James did not win?Of course not. But racism is exactly what we’re hearing is the reason that Andrew Gillum didn’t win in Florida and Stacy Abrams didn’t win in Georgia. Might it be that they didn’t win because those states chose not to elect a progressive Democrat, not because of racism?Identity politics as practiced by the Democratic Party is divisive and harmful, when every outcome is because of race and not because of policy. You didn’t vote for Gillum or Abrams, you’re racist. You don’t want the 10,000 in the migrant caravan from Honduras to enter the US? You’re racist. Mexicans in Tijuana don’t like the migrant caravan in Mexico? They’re racist. You don’t want to abolish ICE? You’re racist. You don’t support open borders? You’re racist. You don’t want the teachers union in charge of public education in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago? You’re racist. You don’t want work requirements for able bodied welfare recipients? You’re racist. You don’t want single payer healthcare? You’re racist. You don’t think people should be so offended by Halloween costumes? You’re racist. You are not black and you wear bangle earrings? Hoop Earrings Are Racist If White Women Wear ThemSuddenly, everything is racistEarth to Democrats: It’s not about race! The Identity-Politics Death Grip | National ReviewWhen modern Democratic Party candidates lose elections today, it’s never because of policy. It’s because of racism, sexism, misogyny, etc..The “basket of deplorables” won big time in Florida and Georgia.

What are the major social differences between Canada and the United States?

While our two countries might look, smell and taste the same to an outsider, ask anyone who has transited from one to the other, the differences are enormous.POLITICS: Canada has a multi-party system. Its mostly a ‘centrist’ country, not taken to extreme left or right thinking. My country has an acceptance of other ideas that is remarkable and allows it to change through time with more fluidity and less rigidity of ideas. The USA on the other hand is a polarized system with Far right and Far left vying for attention and power in a two party tug of war. There is NO room for any central, joining vision. Its either or. Black or white. There is no room for any discordant idea and the worst attacks and ostracism can befall any who dare oppose the status quo and decry the insanity and lack of logic of that failed experiment. Its something wicked and ultimately self-destroying that ends with a president like Trump in office.RELIGION: In Canada, we DON’T CARE! You can practice any religion you want, its your life and your business. Its a personal choice and we respect that. Just do not EVER sermonize or try to recruit… Keep it to yourself. In the USA, if you don’t believe in GOD you are a devil. I mean you can wear KKK white sheets AND be a good christian is some parts, so you see, it really doesn’t make any sense.MONEY: In Canada, the ultimate goal is to have enough for a nice place, good food, a trip down south once a year and nice presents at Christmas and birthdays. We also like to put a bit away for retirement. NOBODY talks about how much they make or what a kick-ass bonus they got. Like religion, its a personal thing, you don’t rub it in peoples’ faces. It does NOT come into the social equation. You can be cool without being the richest. And its not our primary focus (on average, we DO have our competitive individuals…) The fact that our universities and healthcare are subsidized takes a LOT of pressure out of life. No need for an education fund for the kids or a 2nd mortgage for an unexpected heart attack or cancer treatment. In the USA, money is EVERYTHING! Its power, standing, the DREAM!!! Its what drives everybody and for good reasons. Since the USA only values individuals that are winners and treats the rest like undeserving garbage, its a pretty good motivator to try to get rich. EVERYTHING has a price in the USA. Getting cured in a hospital, getting a decent education, living out of a ‘project’, living without gun violence… It costs MONEY to live in the USA! Things that Canadians don’t even think about because they are just there and available, Americans have nightmares and lose sleep over. The most powerful nation on the planet is living a psychosis. Its STRESSED OUT!SOCIAL SHARING: Canada is a ‘Socially Conscious’ country. It does NOT mean that its socialist, like so many Quora users are quick to falsely brand us. The word SOCIAL comes from society… So does Socialism. That is as far as they are connected… Read the definition of SOCIALISM… Its DEFINITELY NOT Canada… SO! What I mean is that we have a truly great social net to help the needy and sick. We also do not like people on welfare if they are just lazy bums. But when its for a real reason like single mothers, sick or handicapped, mentally challenged individuals, we CARE! Americans like to tell us that we pay more taxes. First, its false, we pay LESS taxes on average than US citizens. Secondly, OUR tax dollars go back to our citizens. It pays for healthcare, welfare, public workers, etc… Its not just taken and thrown into a war chest or wasted in inflated medical insurer payments (scams?). In Canada, we know that we are helping the ones who need it the most and that if ever our turn comes up (it can happen to anyone), our country will take care of our basic needs. We do not need to put the word religion on giving. It just comes naturally to most of us because its the way we were raised…SCHOOLS: Our schools are subsidized and education up to college is free for all. Universities are very cheap compared to the USA (its different by province) and we get government guaranteed student loans plus bursaries (on a need basis for EVERYBODY and on merit for the above average). ANY school trying to teach the ‘flat earth theory’ or that creationism is THE only truth would be a laughing stock and closed the next day. Our education is serious and our kids learn about truths (good and bad) and the rest of the world. Access to universities is all about grades and personal choices. NOT about affording the tuition or having to write a glowing resume of your voluntary work and debating skills. If you want it and have passing grades you can get in almost anywhere and not ruin yourself doing it. we even have world renowned schools like McGill, Queens, the HEC and St-F-X. that cost us less than a community college in Vermont. My full 3 years of University cost me UNDER 4000$ CDN in tuition. In the USA, the schools are all dependent on budgets. Different neighborhoods and tax bases equal different education standards and safety issues. Universities are divided into ranks. From Ivy league to small dedicated schools. Your future job is all dependent on where you went to school. Ivy league and you are made. Something less and you might if you work at it. But the COST to go to a good school in the US means that unless you are brilliant and get in on merit, only their elite can enroll. Only the rich can afford the perks and opened doors that Ivy league schools bring. So its kept in the family, with a few tricklers coming in every year. It reminds me of the monarchy and class standings. Whether they admit it or not, Americans have a society divided by class. Just like any monarchy. But instead of titles, its about how rich you are…HEALTHCARE: Its a sad fact, but the stats on COVID-19 will show a very distinct difference between our two countries. Already there are calls from the USA warning that poorer areas are hit with more cases and endure higher mortality rates. In the USA, the healthcare system is not even. Some elite members of society get preferential treatment given by some of the best practitioners in the world using the latest technology. But the MAJORITY of the population has only access to what their insurance will allow or in most cases what medicare or whatever their wallet can get them. I can’t even imagine what devastating psychological effect this must have on a population in a place like New York. The perfect example of America by class representation and strata. I was watching the news last week and I couldn’t help comparing at the politicians’ talk in the US vs here… Cuomo is asking for everything he can get… Trump is blasting anyone that criticizes his lack of leadership and warning them that he will punish the states with leaders that do so… What kind of totally evil man have they elected and what kind of people would tolerate and accept that??? Just saying that in Canada and Trudeau would have been lynched… Anyways… Its nice to see that Trump has his priorities straight during this trying and REVEALING period… (SARCASM!!!)SANITY: Canada is a sane, friendly, working country… The USA is an insane, bullish nation that still thinks its in the 1950s and is lead by a buffoon laughed at the world over. It just does NOT make any sense that they let that happen to them and might even renew the insanity and keep the loony in office…I used to like, even admire Americans. Until the advent of Trump (really, it started to fade with Bush jr.) and the total disintegration of the facade built by Hollywood for the world. These last four years have shown the TRUE face of America for the world to see and we don’t like it… It looks and feels like total corruption and lack of humanity, compassion and sanity.EDIT. May 13 2020… I will just add this… Since the beginning of the pandemic, everything we saw on the news about Trump, the right-wing outbursts, the negativism and anti-science, the bogus religious wrath of god craziness and all of the division that is even more apparent now when the OPPOSITE should be going on is exactly what I thought would happen. It makes me immensely sad. I’m not feeling any sense of righteousness or I told you so… I HOPED I was wrong…Look. After things calm down… We NEED good people to work here. Decent, even religious (if its not extremism and its based on love not the KKK) Americans of absolutely ANY culture or color… NOBODY that thinks guns are for anything but hunting or sports target shooting and realizes they don’t need to be full auto or .50 cal though… We would welcome anybody that can stop fighting about left versus right, that understands paying a BIT more taxes so that everybody lives happy and has a minimum of dignity and services. We also understand that with ONLY 4.5% of the world population but over 25% of the total prison inmates on the planet… Not ALL of those 25% are really criminals. We KNOW that justice in the USA depends on a LOT of factors… I don’t know about immigration Canada, but the people understand… No matter. If Trump wins, Democrats are going to be running afraid for their lives from the deliverance hicks shooting them and saying… Its a STAND YOUR GROUND state man! HE LOOKED AT ME FUNNY! All of Nevada, Alabama, South Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and lots of other places are going to have posses going around… Shootin’ “traitors” to their race… You will all get refugee status then (I am jesting, but just barely… I CAN imagine this somehow happening. .After the crazy that has already happened, why not?)I am sad and disappointed. I am also deeply afraid to be so dependent on such a traitorous ally like we CURRENTLY have… Trump destroyed EVERYTHING in under 4 years… BRAVO! Yeh!!! Good job people …

Is America going to collapse?

I believe the answer is not a matter of “is” but a matter of “when and how.”The American people are as divided and as polarized as in any time in the entire history of the nation, and have been, arguably, for the last 50 years. Such division has intensified with time. Other answers to this question have pointed these divisions out as accurately, or better, than I could, but I will nevertheless attempt to point out the most critical factors. These divisions, in my opinion, are irreconcilable.White supremacy: far too many Americans believe in this abhorrent doctrine and use it as an excuse to elect politicians who implement policies counter to international trends towards egalitarianism and social welfare systems. Acts of intimidation and violence against ethnic minorities have been on the rise, especially since 9/11 and the election of Donald Trump as President.Oligarchy: America has become, at the highest governmental levels, a nation at least heavily influenced, if not outright controlled, by an elite of the wealthiest individuals coupled with major multinational corporations. The interests of the middle class and the poor are largely ignored and the populace manipulated to hate one another based on almost any factor imaginable, including race, gender, sexual orientation and even region of the country one lives in. Again, policies are implemented counter to international trends towards egalitarianism and social welfare systems.Authoritarianism and fascism: American government and society is trending towards a system where fervent nationalism and obedience to the “social order” is enforced by violent, militaristic law enforcement, whose sole aim seems to be command and control of the citizenry to the point of oppression. Individual freedom is suppressed and redefined as obedience to the police state. Deviants from this view are regarded as enemies of the state. There is a point (which I believe will arrive within the next 25 to 50 years), where all of the above will be unacceptable and a “nonstarter” to a certain percentage of the population, (as well as the converse situation, where attempts to address these issues will be unacceptable and a “nonstarter” to those who benefit from them) when separation will be all but inevitable. The nation, in my opinion, will break up into at least three or four regional mini-nations grouped roughly according to similarities in political and social ideology. I will include the Canadian provinces as reference, because in my view, Canada stays completely intact and somewhat unified, and the new American mini-nations will seek stronger political, social and trade alliances with individual provinces. This separation need not be a result of, or lead to, a Second Civil War. A negotiated and peaceful separation and dissolution of the United States can be arranged with the assistance of the United Nations, the European Union or the UK.Please feel free to elaborate, comment, or correct me if I am in error, based on your understanding and experience with these regions. The Pacific seaboard: California, Oregon and Washington, allied with British Columbia, will form a politically left-leaning bloc with at least some of the increasingly politically moderate Intermountain states reluctantly joining in: Nevada will most likely join as it has libertarian leanings, and at least since 2008 has been majority-Democratic Party in regards to number of registered voters. Arizona, long a conservative bastion, is becoming more moderate and may also join this bloc for several reasons including water access issues with the Colorado River. Colorado and New Mexico will likely attempt to join as they are also relatively moderate states with Democratic voter majorities at least in their larger urban areas and college towns.Conservative-leaning Alaska and Utah (although Salt Lake City may be more accurately regarded as “moderate”) might be pulled into the coalition simply by inertia, but see #6 below. The border with Mexico will be significantly relaxed and opened up.The New Confederacy: Most of the old Confederate states will join into a coalition. The state of Florida may divide, with the southern counties loosely or even officially aligning with Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth islands such as Jamaica into a “United States of the Caribbean.” There is already an economic federation called CARICOM, the Caribbean Community, which would be a good fit to become a recognized political union similar to the EU, and also a good fit for an independent South Florida and Puerto Rico to join in the event of the breakup of the USA. Of course, Cuba will be included as well, and possibly even Bermuda, which is actually located well north of the defined Caribbean region (and is already an associate member of CARICOM).Because of the strong emphasis on international tourism, the Orlando region (Orange and Osceola counties mainly) would be politically organized as an independent free trade zone administered by the Walt Disney Company and other companies with an economic stake in the region. The Midwest: Illinois, Iowa, much of Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and maybe Ohio will become a politically moderate-to-liberal bloc. This bloc will form strong ties to Ontario and Manitoba.Southern Indiana and Missouri may join the New Confederacy. But I wonder if Missouri may join the Midwestern bloc. The Northeast/Mid-Atlantic: Much of the northern part of the original 1776 states will become a politically libertarian/left-leaning bloc with Ohio possibly joining in. Ohio will be the link between this and the Midwestern bloc. Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire will especially align with Quebec and the Maritimes/Atlantic provinces.Texas: Texas will be its own bloc allied loosely with the New Confederacy. Oklahoma, Kansas and possibly Missouri will be pulled in.The border with Mexico will remain as semi-closed as it is currently. The High Plains/Rockies: The Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska will be a politically centrist/libertarian bloc. Idaho, Utah and possibly some of the eastern/southern counties of Washington and Oregon, and even some of the northern counties of California and Nevada, might at least be aligned with this. (There was a brief secession movement in the time right before World War II in southern Oregon/far northern California called the “State of Jefferson”, these counties lean libertarian if not outright conservative even to this day; Donald Trump carried most of these counties in 2016 by a wide margin.) I see even Alaska trying to align with this group. This bloc will seek common ground with conservatives in Saskatchewan and Alberta.EDIT October 2020: I am revisiting this answer one month before the 2020 US presidential election, which has again underscored the above differences, but also revealed a deep desire among much of the population to give it one “last try” to come together and make a stand against what appears to be rapidly growing fascism and white supremacy, perceived to be approved and mandated at the highest levels of government under the Trump administration.Demographic changes nationwide, and notably in the South and in Texas, are changing how I view things, as African Americans, as well as other ethnic and racial minorities, have been engaging in a new and ongoing civil rights movement (Black Lives Matter) in response to what has turned out to be numerous officer-involved incidents in the last few years where Black people have died at the hands of law enforcement. Many White allies have joined this movement. Hispanic/Latino (including undocumented immigrants from Latin America, many subject to increased hostility and official efforts to “deter” them from trying to enter the US, including separating children from their families at the border with Mexico and holding migrants in what amounts to concentration camps) and Native/indigenous communities have also renewed activism and calls for greater justice, acceptance and inclusion. As of October 1, early voting in a handful of states is at record levels. Voter registration in several states is at record levels. States which have historically been GOP strongholds are now clearly regarded as “battleground” states where massive voter turnout could make for literally shocking and unprecedented results. However, resistance, and some of it organized, from groups generally regarded, and some officially labeled, as white supremacist is quite stubborn (members of these groups, many among them carrying weapons, have clashed with left-wing/Black Lives Matter protesters in cities nationwide, with a handful of tragic deaths), and president Donald Trump, especially in his first official debate with challenger, former VP Joe Biden, seen by many as actually encouraging these groups to engage in violent acts in an effort to protect their racist views, and by extension, an administration seen by many Americans to be unacceptably unfriendly to the concerns of minorities, as well as to concerns about the economy, climate change, etc..The COVID-19/coronavirus global pandemic, which has resulted in over 200,000 deaths in the United States alone since February, and the resulting massive disruptions to American daily life and the American economy, cast a gloomy shadow over the entire proceedings. Major public events canceled. Entire cities, including Las Vegas with its massive hotels and casinos, completely shut down for weeks. Sports leagues playing games to empty arenas with athletes quarantined in dedicated “bubble” environments.Millions have become unemployed. Many of those who still have jobs are working from their homes in record numbers, as reporting for work in an office building could facilitate spread of the virus. Those who cannot work from home have become accustomed to wearing face masks and face shields, and these are not necessarily limited to doctors, nurses and first responders - even the likes of restaurant workers and supermarket checkout clerks are taking similar precautions. Clear differences in approach and opinion of how this disease is managed from a public health standpoint, from state to state depending largely upon conservative or moderate/liberal ideology. The Trump administration seen largely as taking a hands-off approach, especially early on in the crisis, which has arguably cost a LOT of lives.Bitter arguments and even physical altercations have happened over the simple practice of wearing a mask to help stop the spread of this virus. There is a global effort to create a viable vaccine, but the timeline to implementation is at least Q1 2021 and that’s being optimistic. Thousands more could potentially fall victim to this disease in the meantime. As much as the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the ongoing divisions in America, many Americans have also become united in grief for those lost and in a desire to work together to come up with real solutions to “get back to normal.”The American republic might get an extension on its survival, but one month from election day, there are still far too many variables to have the most clear picture.EDIT (February 2021): The bitterly contested, yet ultimately decisive, election victory of Joe Biden, as well as the horrific events at the U.S. Capitol of January 6 (along with Mr. Trump’s disgustingly defiant refusal to concede and his efforts to overturn the election results literally by hook and by crook a shamefully defiant and tragic response to that victory), as well as the second impeachment of Mr. Trump and subsequent delaying of the trial and eventual acquittal, DO NOT give me much long-term confidence that our Union will remain intact. Immediately after the impeachment acquittal, the now-former president issued a somewhat defiant statement basically saying “I ain’t goin’ nowhere.” There are still too many Americans that believe Trump should somehow remain in office and will gladly vote to put him (or someone even more dangerous) back in power. And there are too many Americans who think the former group are crazy and dangerous. Not a good recipe for national healing and unity. However, criminal litigation is pending at least in New York State and elsewhere. This story is only just beginning.
