It’s difficult to qualify for Medicaid. A great many applicants are denied. I work with people. More specifically, I work with seniors in an independent living facility. The majority of them live on extremely low incomes.My job is to keep them living independently as long as possible. I do this by helping them with all sorts of different issues that they might have. I help with Medicare and Medicaid applications and questions. I help them find food assistance programs. I help with legal issues such as power of attorney and DNR orders, and make referrals for more complicated matters. Some days I just interpret mail or listen to their concerns and joys in life. I do crisis interventions and help calm family matters, and sometimes I even change lightbulbs.My job is pleasurable because I know I have the ability to help others and I have the opportunity to use that ability. Some days it's stressfull, but there are always the positive outcomes that make it worthwhile.Before I go to work every day, I drink coffee on my deck which is also as equally pleasurable as going to work.

First, its important to understand that Medicaid is really an umbrella term for multiple programs - several of which provide benefits to the elderly and disabled.In Florida, the Institutional Care Program (ICP) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS or sometimes called waiver) programs are for those over age of 65 or disabled, who meet Medicaid’s income and asset requirements, and who need assistance with a certain number of activities of daily living.Generally, if a Medicaid applicant needs assistance with 3 out of 6 activities of daily living or has advanced dementia, they will usually qualify for nursing home care (ICP).If a Medicaid applicant needs assistance with fewer than 3, he/she will generally be deemed able to living in the community and would then qualify for the Medicaid HCBS/Waiver program.However, in Florida at least, the HCBS programs all have waiting lists associated with them as funding for these programs are limited.
